Quite interesting in today's Sunday Telegraph Stella magazine - www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/main.jhtml?xml=/fashion/2007/04/08/stspend108.xml
single mother, girl about town, pampered teen, widowed pensioner and city wife (wife of course, never a rich working woman, always a leech like non earner living off male earnings..)

Anyway it's interesting to see what they spend in an average week.

single mother spends just under £80
City wife = over £3000
Ok £1000 was for daughters trip but still!

Pampered teen spent over a £1000 as well - in a week on nothing!

If only I had that much money.

Why don't they do a working couple - average income (around £30,000 say) and see what she spent? That would have been interesting.

why is that not working?
here

Gobbledigook · 08/04/2007 20:53

Ooooh, I'm gonna get flamed for this but...

Single mother has £115 income and she spends £21 of it on fags? That's the first thing I'd be cutting out.

Agree Armadillo - not exactly a representative cross section is it? I don't think I fit into any of those categories.

TheArmadillo · 08/04/2007 20:56

they always seem to pick extremes

Cannot believe they spent that much money on nothing though. Bloody hell it added up quick (that's more than we have in a month including paying bills).

Jesus.

IT was definately eye-opening.

harpsichordcarrier · 08/04/2007 20:56

that girl about town has my old life
I WANT IT BACK

Gobbledigook · 08/04/2007 20:56

City wife - £280 on sheets! ROFL!

Gobbledigook · 08/04/2007 20:56

£450 on cleaner - lazy cow.

Gobbledigook · 08/04/2007 20:57

Cash for housekeeper to pick up weekend meat order from Lidgate
£74

OMG - is it htis article or the Pinot kicking in - I am hysterical!!

Gobbledigook · 08/04/2007 20:58

Pilates at home with the trainer
£55

Oh yeah? Let's at least hear the real story!

mummytosteven · 08/04/2007 20:58

not clear though whether the £21 quid of fags was to last her just the week (optimistic icon required here).

probably nearer the single mum expenditure than any of the others..

harpsichordcarrier · 08/04/2007 20:58

before we had children, we did a budget to try and cut down on our spending and save up
we were spending £50 a month on magazines
oh happy bloody days

ScoobyDooooo · 08/04/2007 21:00

Blimey that is an eye opener, i also wish the had done a couple with such & such income, wonder why they never?

Gobbledigook · 08/04/2007 21:02

They should have done a couple on the national average income (Is that £26K?).

And another on an income that people tend to be on around me, for my own personal interest

TheArmadillo · 08/04/2007 21:05

Small private income and she has £3000 to spend in a week!

Now I'm thinking of all the things I could buy with that.

mousiemousie · 08/04/2007 21:09

Girl about town rented a 1 bed flat in or near Bristol for £325/ month incl electricity...property round here is mire than double that (not in London either)...is it really so cheap to rent in Bristol?

TheArmadillo · 08/04/2007 21:10

not usually.

Cheaper than London.

But Redland has a few students so it could be bedsit style.

Pollyanna · 08/04/2007 21:21

the pampered teen spends more than i do.

bloody hell, I had to work when I was 19

Agree, not at all representative. xenia, you don't know whether the rich woman is a leech - she has a private income too.

bozza · 08/04/2007 21:23

I thought that pampered teen sounded spoilt - until I read the city wife, that is. But yes agree with extremes, apart from the girl about town, I suppose. But there was nobody like me either. Maybe I should concoct one for my spends in a week. But this week has been a very long week so I doubt I can think back to last Monday.

Blondilocks · 08/04/2007 21:30

Maybe mumsnet should do a weekly spend thing for one week. Although if I did last week I only bought petrol as was working so much I didn't have time to go anywhere to spend money!

bozza · 08/04/2007 21:44

Oh I spent quite a bit.

Monday - £36, petrol
Tuesday - £10, cinema ticket and snack, 85p on toast and diet coke
Wednesday - £20 in Woollies on Easter eggs and pjs, £15 on fruit and veg box, 85p on toast and diet coke
Thursday - £15 in Asda on groceries, 85p on toast and diet coke
Friday - £6 on paintbrushes/masking tape at local DIY place, £10 on a packed lunch box for DD (DS's present to her for her birthday) from Toys R Us, £15 on football boots for DS from JJB, £15 on paint for DD's bedroom (we ran out) from B&Q, 30p on penny sweets for the DC from local shop
Saturday - £43 on curtains, sheet and pictures for DD's bedroom from Next, £12 on two pairs of Doodles from Clarks outlet, £15 on footbed flipflops for me from Clarks outlet, £1.30 for a bottle of diet coke, £3.50 to park at Lotherton Hall and look at birds, £2 for two ice-creams for DS and DD
Sunday - £32 for meal out with friends to celebrate their DS's first birthday.

£253.65

Judy1234 · 08/04/2007 21:54

Interesting isn't it and also what I found extravagant for the poor girl on benefits - her cigarettes and wine etc

OP posts:
stitch · 08/04/2007 21:56

hmmmm, maybe im odd int thinkng this, but the only person who seems excessively wsteful hhere to me is teh girl about town. all her money is spent on eating expensive fssst food, or clothes.
at least the city wife seems to get something for her money., (though i still think she could giv e it to me to make better use off!)
oh, and the single mom, spending almost 20 percent of her income on cigarettes is excessively selfish.
but what would be the point of writing up about normal easrning couuple spending mnormal amounts. [cynical emoticon]

What like me, stitch? Actually I think that was a quite heavy spend week for me, but we are decorating DD's bedroom and it is Easter.
