Article on what people spend..

Quite interesting in today's Sunday Telegraph Stella magazine - www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/main.jhtml?xml=/fashion/2007/04/08/stspend108.xml
single mother, girl about town, pampered teen, widowed pensioner and city wife (wife of course, never a rich working woman, always a leech like non earner living off male earnings..)

Anyway it's interesting to see what they spend in an average week.

And I just counted stuff that I actually paid out cash for during the week - so there was no gym membership, any form of bills, childcare, money put away for holidays etc.

Gobbledigook · 08/04/2007 22:00

true £100 a month seems an awful lot.

bozza · 08/04/2007 22:02

We pay £80 in a modern four bed house. Poor people do tend to get ripped off though, because they are made to use those meters which work out more expensive.

eh? bozza? what you mean?????

okie, heres my spend. dh likes to control purse strings, so i spose im bit like city wife.
mon, disneyland, (first holiday for us as a family in 8 years) dh spent as i had nada.
tues, nothing, but usually tea at the gym after kids football, so botu £11 nd every five weeks its my turn to get the wine, so £12 once in five weeks.
wed, £10 ish on groceries, £6 in chemist for dd excema cream £1 library fine
thurs 0
fri 0
sat 0
sun 0

total of £17. hmm, sounds good doesnt it?
but, did tesco online grocery shop last week, £123
boots online suncare etc £51
organic veg box £22
asos clothes, as lost weight and need new clothes £83
figleaves, need bra's that fit £70ish
dh pays all bills etc, or not, git doesnt tell me either his incomings or outgoings. above is all done on his credit card, as i metnnioned, he is a bit of a control freak.

I was just classifying myself as a "normal person spending normal amounts of money", that's all stitch. At least I think I am.

FrayedKnot · 08/04/2007 22:21

I read that. pampered teen shocked me, others well..just extremes, as you would expect.

But the teenager

Judy1234 · 08/04/2007 22:43

I am a bit in the city wife category to be honest but it depends how cash flow is whether I have a week like her or not. It interests me because you can move from one category to another and it almost happens accidentally as income increases and then you see something as fine and normal and yet to other people it's hugely excessive.

I thought pampered teen was probably the worst and not good for her.

I suppose it may not be a typical week for anyone. Is there a typical week? It would be hard to get an average week.

It does seem excessive to spend £25 a week on electric and gas, I only spend £25 a month on electric and there are 4 of us in a 3 bedroomed flat and it's £34 for our gas.

But maybe the single mum is paying off gas and electric debts? and that is why she spends £25 a week on gas and electric. I don't know if companies do that but it could be the reason it's so high.

DeviousDaffodil · 08/04/2007 23:16

She porbably has to get a prepay vard.
And is probably paying through the nose for it.
No wonder she bloody smokes.
Shows how wide the gap is between te rich and the poor in this country

Gobbledigook · 08/04/2007 23:18

Difficult to find a 'typical' week, I agree.

Last week my spend was high but there were several things on it I don't get every week
like a new tyre for the car, boys' haircuts...

Judy1234 · 08/04/2007 23:23

I would find it hard to remember. 3 are home from university so there seem to be more crucial (supposedly) demands for money and school holidays. The 3 boys went to the cinema which seemed to cost quite a lot and the nanny was here on 4 full days as it's school holidays so that was extra cost.

Im on a prepayment meter and spent £25 a week on gas and electric. In the winter it eats it up and I need to put more on
In summer it build up so for the first few cold months we can have the heating on till the biult up summer money runs out.
Then its on only on when the kids are home from school and it still eats over £20 in gas and nearly 10 quid electric.
