Can you be paid statutory maternity pay retrospectively?

Basically as the title, I was very very ill when pregnant but self employed. I never got round to claiming the SMP but I want to know if this can be paid after maternity has finished? I'm now chronically sick because of massive failings in the NHS when I was pregnant and we are having to pay for that privately? I don't get any child benefit does anyone know if I am entitled to this? I've started a new business with my husband and I am employed by it and earn £671 a month from it and receive dividends too. He has another business who employs him and pays him a wage and also dividends. We are about a 85k household plus I think? Maybe a bit more or less.
Because I am now employed does this affect my right to claim SMP retrospectively? I was not employed when pregnant I was self employed and I did not do the paper work at the time as I was so sick. Thank you

Evening All.....things seem to have blown over at last so let's try to keep things friendly Wine Cake Gin

OP could your dh not have filled in the MA paperwork whilst you were pregnant if you were too ill to do it yourself?

Nap it was the last thing on our mind my survival was and so was our baby's. I wish nobody the agony of what we have experienced.

Jax thank you your comment made me feel a lot better I'm not Teflon I'm just genuine to the point I'm happy to give my name address and LinkedIn or Facebook to the lot of you. I thought we were a support network but evidently we are not.

I'm more into being kind then having a tiff thanks for the facts that's all I have to say. Birthday dinner at home with my husband best friend has been cut short from the pain. So there we go. Back in bed and back on the forum where some people are chronically unhelpful and unkind.

I am very very sensitive and put my hands up but I asked a question about Mat leave pay because I did pay tax and I do pay tax and I am struggling and I want to be the healthiest mum the most quickly I can for my family. If anyone has an issue with that I would be shocked. I thought we were all in the same boat; soft play together, baby sensory together, school together, exams together sleepover together the lot. Retirement, sickness, humour and we are not.

I go to bed and wonder why on earth I bother??? There are some of you here who are always helpful and kind and some of you leave a lot to be desired.

Also @FlissMumsnet I've just realised I can tag like twitter that's fantastic. The only reason it "died down" was because I left to be with my husband for a few hours. I asked a question and one after another have asked about other aspects of my life non related to my situation. It's a simple yes or no board and I am at a loss why people's opinions have gotten involved.

Is thanks @ChessieFL and the rest of you for giving the facts and not opinions. It's made the process a lot less heart breaking.

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure the government have launched a savings account for parents to save for childcare, they add 20% to whatever you put in essentially making it tax free. I am fortunate enough to not have to pay for chold care so haven't taken too much notice but it was in an email I received from moneysavingexpert - could this help you at all? Perhaps have a look on their website and see if there's anything you can get help with?

*childcare! Who knows what choldcare is!!
