Child tax credits and starting work

Hello, somebody please help me. From what I've read on the HMRC website, your current award for tax credits runs up until the April of the next year. If your income goes up, you can either tell them the change or wait until you get your renewal pack in April. Now, my partner was claiming jsa but has now found work, will child tax credits stop now he has signed off jsa? Or will we continue to recieve and pay back any that is owed next year? I'm worried they will stop as we won't see any of his wages soon as it is 1month arrears and obviously Christmas is coming so I'm relying on my tax credits and child benefit to tide me over until he gets payed. Thanks for any help xx

It's a few years ago now, but I used to claim WTC, in May so one month into the tax year I moved in with my DP, told them and they ended my claim. They paid me one further month, then the following year I got a notice email to say I'd been overpaid and needed to pay back £400 odd pounds by October. I really wouldn't delay informing them or your overpayment will be enormous Sad

But he will still be supporting your family. I doubt you would be allowed to claim as a lone parent especially as he will be home some of the time. You need to ring them to clarify. If you claimed as a lone parent you would have to start looking for work yourself once your youngest turns 3. if you are able to claim as a lone parent it seems like a very unfair loophole when you have a dh earning £30k !!

I mean claim until he is home and the our claim would end, they need to help me with something as like I said the whole meaning of this post is my lack of income for atleast the next month, I would no way claim money I wasn't entitled to and have my partner work that much. I fully intend on returning to work self employed as a beautician once my youngest is 2 in may, sorry if you are misunderstood but I by no means intend of taking off the family's that need it most, at the moment we need support that is what I want to know if I am entitled to

Babyroobs that's incorrect a tax credit as a lone parent doesn't mean you need to work.

I honestly have no idea about this, I cannot see me being entitled to anything but I'm going to have to phone up and discuss it with them. Online it says your claim will end if you leave the uk for business more than 8weeks, he will be gone atleast 12 weeks at a time and maybe double that if he takes overtime. When I gave birth to my eldest son who is now 3, I was under the illusion that because I was on maternity pay and my partner worked we could not claim anything including child benefit, we have only been claiming child benefit since august this year. I was told that families with an income of £50k or more (which was us at that time) weren't entitled to child benefit, now I read that you are in fact entitled to it but have to pay back a certain amount! So we lost out on that benefit for over 2 years!!

You really need to phone them tonight. They close at 8pm.

The longer you leave it the more you may need to pay back any overpayment. You wont be able to claim as a single person because your partner will be registered as living in your home even thougn he is working overseas.

Congratulations on his new job.

Thank you reboot your engine, I wanted to wait until I had spoken to him as he can tell me all details of his job that they will need to know. I've usually heard from him by now I think maybe his internet on the ship maybe down.

Please ignore anything anyone says on here. You have no idea what their level of experience with benefits advice is (and I say that as a paid benefits adviser in real life). anyone can google...

Phone HMRC in the morning or if you prefer, and can get an appointment, try CAB first.

user1479732438 · 21/11/2016 18:53

I will phone them once I have got the details and employer name address etc from my partner. So do you know what, if anything, we will be entitled to until the tax year ends??

Apologies Seven, I was thinking of income support. I still don't think op can claim as a lone parent though as others have said.

user1479732438 · 21/11/2016 18:55

I was thinking of phoning turn2us, are they any good? Just to get some advice really or are CAB better?

Op, you will get child tax credits and child beneft until the end of the tax year. No-one can give exact figures without knowing your dh's estimated income until the end of the tax year.
