As I have just finished mine, and am feeling virtuous (if broke), I thought I would nag the rest of the world.

You know you have to do it, and although personally I prefer cleaning every loo in the house, or under the fridge - it doesn't cost me £100 if I don't do those things by Wednesday.

Can I ask a stupid question? If they haven't sent me one I don't have to do it do I? I was a sahm for ages and the IR agreed they no longer wanted me to complete one during those years but I have been employed for the past couple of years (PAYE) and they don't seem to have sent me a return. They must have my address etc because of my employment. There is nothing to declare (no income other than salary and maintenance) but just wondered.

Itsthawooluff · 28/01/2007 13:20

No, if you haven't been issued with one, and your only source of income is PAYE you shouldn't need to fill one in BUT I was convinced I hadn't been sent one, until I got a reminder call from the Revenue saying I had. So might be worth a quick call to relevant Revenue office tomorrow to check whether one has been issued or not. They should be able to trace you from your NI number.

yeah I will do it, but can't get onto it until tuesday.

And I've got to do the previous year's as well otherwise i guess i'm in deep shit.

I am so disorganised about this kind of thing!

Itsthawooluff · 28/01/2007 13:26

Also, I think there may be strike action in some Revenue offices on 31st. The website says "Paper returns can be delivered to any HMRC office and we will do all we can to open our Enquiry Centres to receive returns. A taxpayer or their agent who finds it impossible to file by 31 Jan due to the industrial action should file as soon as possible on the following day."

I just take mine round to the local office and dump it in the box they have, rather than sending it to "my" tax office.

LOL. I used to be like this every January!! Then last year, I was due a rebate as I had stopped working when expecting DS. Cue one tax return in by May. Sorry, that doesn't help you guys does it! But I do understand how you feel....

I had to do it before christmas and was dreading it, what with the size of the form etc, but it literally took 5 minutes and most of that was checking my details.

aDad · 28/01/2007 13:43

i know i know

I did 3 years in one go once!

It's not as bad as it sounds as half the work i do is taxed at source, so I do pay some tax through the year. Otherwise my bill would be even more scary.

MimmyPig · 28/01/2007 13:46

If you file it on 31st Jan then you aren't going to pay it on 31st Jan are you? My payment is due on 31st Jan so how does that work if you don't even send in the form until then?

Itsthawooluff · 28/01/2007 13:52

If you file it by 30 september then Rev will work out what tax you need to pay (if any) by 31 Jan, and tell you. If you are filing after then, but before 31 Jan, then you are supposed to work out yourself how much tax is due, and make payment at the same time.

I know how much I owe them, but the chances of me paying that amount at the end of Jan are zero - long time since payday at Xmas - so I'm not making a payment now, but it does mean that they will charge me interest from 31 Jan onwards.

Ahh, was just wondering because I know what I owe (a lot!) but dh doesn't get paid until 2nd Feb which gives us a cash flow issue as I need to pay tax on 31st Jan but mortgage (also a lot!!) goes out on 1st Feb but no pay going in till 2nd Feb. Was planning to pay by cheque in the hope it wouldn't clear until 2nd Feb at the earliest.

Honestly 31st Jan - what a shitty time to ask for a tax payment!

Itsthawooluff · 28/01/2007 14:00

Mimmypig TBH I'd be tempted to file return by 31st Jan, to avoid filing penalty, but "forget" to include cheque, and then remember post 2 Feb - it means a couple of days worth of interest, but rather that than (in my case) exceed overdraft

Weatherwax · 28/01/2007 14:12

dh is upstairs working on his. I did mine a week ago after a "nice" man from the revenue called me after christmas and I promised I'd get on to it as soon as the kids went back to school. Stupid of me really because as a SAHM they owe me money! Its a bit late now but I recommend doing it online as it works it all out for you. Its a bit late because you have to get codes sent to you through the post before you can start using it. It only took me a week to find my log in number....[scatty smiley]

MimmyPig · 28/01/2007 15:44

I have filed my return online - I did it in November. It's just making the payment - I could do with a couple of days grace

IntergalacticWalrus · 28/01/2007 15:54

Did mine Friday..

Hate it!

My book keeping leaves a lot to be desired too

Haily111 · 28/01/2007 17:30

Does everyone have to do one????

wheresthehamster · 28/01/2007 17:34

I've actually done some housework today, just to delay it a bit longer.

I did mine last week. Worked out that the taxman owes me money. Serves me right - I should have done it in May.

I am definitely going to do it in May this year. I say that every year but this time I mean it.

Eddas · 29/01/2007 17:27

Did you know that if you owe under £100 or are due a refund from HMRC you will not be fined £100 for a late return? Also, re paying the money it is due by 31st Jan but all paying late means is that they will charge you interest. For the person who said about paying on 2nd Feb I doubt they will even bother. Don't quote me on that though

saadia · 29/01/2007 17:37

been nagging dh, he still hasn't done last year's [worried emoticon].

aDad · 29/01/2007 17:40
