I have checked my student loan account. My last payment comes out this week.

Fuck. I've paid off my student debt.

I borrowed that money when I was 18-21

I don't have anyone to celebrate with :(

I could take myself for a cocktail or a movie.

An extra £120 a month now too.

I don't think I'll ever be able to pay off my student loan.

Aw thanks hesterton :)

I could rope a friend in for a drink I guess.

Need to find someone to share my new wealth with.

Sothathappened Make sure the SLC issue a stop notice otherwise you'll have the fun of trying to get any repayment back and the money still going out until the stop notice is received by your payroll.

Well done!!!

SoThatHappened · 21/03/2016 06:19

I am a dinosaur. I pre-date paying it from earnings I am direct debit so when it has gone it has gone. :)

Also I start a new job with a decent pay rise in a couple of weeks. So with my loan paid off and my pay rise i have an additional £550 a month. Wonder what I should do with it.

ICJump · 21/03/2016 06:23

Wow!

I know I should say something sensible but if you saved two months you could take yourself on a holiday

SoThatHappened · 21/03/2016 06:26

I think I will take myself on a holiday. I should have before the new job but maybe better to pass probation.

I feel too old to enjoy my money now. I didnt have nay money in my "youth".

tribpot · 21/03/2016 06:27

Great timing - the end of the loan and the pay rise. I agree with ICJump - a holiday? Congratulations!

cozietoesie · 21/03/2016 09:55

You could well find yourself so ingrained with habits of economy that you're not able to spend it.

Well done though. Smile

OneMagnumisneverenough · 21/03/2016 09:58

Woo hoo! Well done, that will be rid of a millstone then. How old are you (roughly) if you don't mind me asking? Just wondering how long my teenagers are going to have that debt when and if the head off to Uni.

SoThatHappened · 21/03/2016 11:14

I am 37.

You're right. I feel too scared to spend anything still.

OP posts:
OneMagnumisneverenough · 21/03/2016 11:20

Aww OP that's a fair bit of extra income with the job thing etc too. Honestly you will get used to spending it :)

In the meantime maybe think of something that you'd like to save up for so that if you don't spend the money and save it instead, at least you have a justifiable reason (in your head) for not spending it. i.e. would you like to move house/buy a car/travel/get a new kitchen?

I dont have a car or a house. Always in too much debt to contemplate.

RandomMess · 21/03/2016 13:03

I am an dinosaur, took out the original loans - still don't earn enough (quite) to have to start repaying them Shock

cozietoesie · 21/03/2016 13:03

Take a little breathing space then. It can make a huge difference to suddenly have 'surplus' income and there's no need to rush straight into spending. Smile

cozietoesie · 21/03/2016 13:06

PS - and after years of economy, you may well have a lot of 'moth-eared' stuff which you would prefer to renew ?

lorelei9 · 21/03/2016 13:09

Id save mist of it
But how are you too old to enjoy it at 37? At 97 maybe....

BikeRunSki · 21/03/2016 13:12

Awesome! Definitely a holiday. £6600 a year better off - that's about what we pay in mortgage.

SoThatHappened · 21/03/2016 13:49

I just feel old. I dont know why.

Holiday is good...where should I go?

OP posts:
SoThatHappened · 21/03/2016 13:49

Somewhere long distance.....

OP posts:
lorelei9 · 21/03/2016 14:00

Do you actually want a holiday? Don't fancy saving for a house or flat?

OneMagnumisneverenough · 21/03/2016 14:01

You are definitely not old!

You are in your prime fgs!

As for destinations, what do you envisage doing on a holiday? Lying on a beach/by a pool? Investigating and touring different places? What time of year would you want to go? Would you be going on your own?

If I was your age and holidaying alone I think I would fancy going on a tour on the Canada train travelling from West to East, or maybe around Italy, or New England in the Autumn with a couple of days in NYC.

Or if beachy then somewhere non loud and leery. Gozo not too far away maybe? or Sorrento or something.

Or a cruise might be good. Lots of younger peoples ones now
