Thanks Sminky - it just bothers me. My good friend went through a horrible divorce at the time of her recruitment, and I suspect she's taken Tropics on to help give her some focus. But she definitely can't afford to lose any money, and her FB has gone from being personal, to recommending these "amazing" products all the time.

More than anything, MLM makes me really sad.

Is that JP, flamebar? My bot has posted the exact same image

SwashbucklingInBrooklyn · 08/02/2016 13:41

From Tropic's Website:
Ambassador Levels - Monthly Income:- £100-£600+
Manager Levels - Monthly Income: - £600-£2000+
Executive Levels - Monthly Income: - £2,000 - £10,000+

^ this bit in a fancy orange box
and the bit below in very small, grey-ed out print.

*These are illustrations of example earnings only. There are no guarantees regarding income and like any other self-employed business, income depends upon each Ambassador's own skills and personal effort. Tropic is a product-driven company that strongly encourages the use of its products before becoming an independent Ambassador. It is illegal for a promoter or a participant in a trading scheme to persuade anyone to make a payment by promising benefits from getting others to join the scheme

But the implication is that the first number of each level is the minimum you will earn? Otherwise, why not just put average earnings?
This is why I'm suspicious that Tropic has all the hallmarks for going down that darker MLM road

Yes, Juice Plus, Swashbuckling

Who you are approached by and how aware you are of these scams definitely has a massive impact on whether you get drawn in or not. i've been approached by 2, went to a meeting not knowing what it was with the first. The girl who approached me first is a sensible, hard working professional who is usually very careful with money. I was far less sceptical in that case and the only thing that aroused my suspician was the pushing of the opportunity rather than the product. The second actually pushed the product far more but I was more prepared. She has hated all her jobs and likes to spend so I was far less likely to jump on board. I can totally see why it happens with all the right factors in place though.

finallyregisteredtopost · 08/02/2016 13:49

Does anyone remember the low level schemes you used to see in the paper years ago too. Send £15 to hear about a job opp which consisted of placing ads to get more people to send £15...i think that's the main reason I cottoned on.

Eyespying · 08/02/2016 13:55

sminkypink I would agree that 'Pampered Chef' appears to be one of the least cultic 'MLMs,' but it still uses all the thought-stopping Utopian 'MLM income opportunity' jargon and imagery. Tellingly, the bosses of 'Pampered Chef' (and of 'Berkshire Hathaway' the famous Hedge Fund company which owns it) have kept the actual overall results of the so-called 'income opportunity' hidden from view.

You've got to ask yourself what possible lawful reason could there be for constantly repeating all this familiar bullshit and for withholding key-information from the public and regulators?

I've even had an arrogant Pampered Chef shill posting provocative comments on my Blog. When I simply asked her the most basic questions about the overall number of persons who have been churned through 'Pampered Chef' since it was first instigated, and how many of these transient 'business owners' have actually made a net profit, the shill had no reply.

BSintolerant · 08/02/2016 13:58

FL tells you to introduce the business opportunity before you mention the products because you're selling the so-called lifestyle. If that doesn't work then you're encouraged to inflict the products onto people.

As for becoming a manager, bots are given that title when they've hoodwinked five others to sign up. If you buy a business owners box you immediately become an assistant supervisor, which is a load of tosh. How much supervision does a box of shoddy products actually need? #givemestrength

darceybussell · 08/02/2016 13:59

I've just been nosying at juice plus UK's accounts. They've made a loss the last 2 years in a row. Wonder whether your average JP bot knows that.

darceybussell · 08/02/2016 14:02

Oh, and juice plus U.K. Is owned by Arbonne. Interesting. I didn't realise they were the same people.

darceybussell · 08/02/2016 14:05

Oh wait ignore that last bit I'm talking rubbish.

darceybussell · 08/02/2016 14:07

They ARE making a loss, but they are not in the same group as arbonne.

Motorheadmum · 08/02/2016 14:08

Afternoon all! I have achieved being removed from a JP bots group.... I questioned how ethical JP really were after she posted about what an ethical company they were and I questioned with Rex Maughn and him donating to anti gay groups...

She didn't like it one bit and demanded to know where I got my info from! The she deleted me.

Motorheadmum · 08/02/2016 14:12

I mean FL!

GeordieBadger · 08/02/2016 14:15

What's the average lifespan of a bot? What happens when they eventually realise it's all tosh and they have been conned? How do they dodge the embarrassment?

finallyregisteredtopost · 08/02/2016 14:16

Wow 5 people to become manager. Seems my FL bot is lying about how many people are in her team then. Or they're dropping off again as quickly as more are recruited.

cozietoesie · 08/02/2016 14:25

Well done Motorheadmum. Smile

Eyespying · 08/02/2016 14:29

longtimelurking History shows that it is painfully easy to take any 'good/positive versus evil/negative' traditional 'religious' myth, and rewrite it.

L. Ron Hubbard simply took the Christian myth and translated it into 1950s comic-book, science-fiction terminology, complete with Good and Evil Inter-Gallactic Rulers, instead of God and the Devil. He first peddled 'salvation' as a new science of the mind, Dianetics, but when he faced investigation, Hubbard created a Church and began peddling a so-called 'Self-Betterment Spritual Technology' which he pretended could turn ordinary humans into superhumans.

'MLM' cults are religious cults, in the sense that they are built on a two-dimensional non-rational ritual belief rewritten in Commercial/Self-Betterment terminology, and they are peddling dangerous answers to what are some pretty big questions for most people.

'MLM' cults are ultimately peddling vulnerable poor humans a fake plan to transform into millionaire superhumans.

Apart from their comic book camouflage, there is no real difference between the 'Scientology' cultic racket and the 'MLM' cultic racket.

cozietoesie I was pleased myself! I would love to know what her up lines said!

cozietoesie · 08/02/2016 14:33

As far as I'm aware, most such groups require an 'enemy' against which to thrust and rail. Are The Haterz it for MLMs?

darceybussell · 08/02/2016 14:35

Motörhead - She didn't even wait to find out where you had got the information from then?

cozietoesie · 08/02/2016 14:37

How can something hydrate 'faster than water' ? Anyone here with a scientific background ?

Motorheadmum · 08/02/2016 14:38

darcey I replied saying it was all over the Internet but within a minute she deleted me! I have pmd it to the tv page
