can't pay the rent!!!

I am fuming mad with my ex partner! He hasn't paid any maintenance in the last three months. He promised to do it this week but failed again! I have spent all my savings in surviving and now I don't have enough money to pay the rent (which is due tomorrow, but hopefully won't go out until Monday!)

Here is my situation:

  • can't count on relatives
  • can't trust my ex (that is why I am like this!)
  • I have a credit card but I believe it would be super expensive to get all the cash for the rent out, plus I am afraid that will ring some some of alert and will affect my credit rating
  • I don't qualify for any benefits (have checked)

This is such a messed up situation, I have never been late in any payments, least of all the rent!

Would hugely appreciate any advice.

MsM
Standing orders cannot go out on a weekend.
It either went Friday or will go on Monday.
So call the bank first thing Monday and see what they can do.

SoonToBeSix · 14/02/2015 14:30

Cancel your standing order online today asap.

SoonToBeSix · 14/02/2015 14:31

Can you not apply online for overdraft? My bank ( nationwide) lets you instantly increase OD online.

FourAndDone · 14/02/2015 14:37

Mine to soon.
Worth a look op or certainly call the bank today. Monday will be too late.

lemisscared · 14/02/2015 14:38

why are people encouraging the op to get into debt? unless this is likely to be a blip due to her overspending this month and she will be able to cover the rent next month without maintenance, this is at best a sticking plaster approach.

FourAndDone · 14/02/2015 14:40

Because the op has hinted that this is the way she would like to go. I don't really understand what your solution is lem, it's all good and well speaking to the landlord but if op doesn't get paid for 3 more weeks or whatever then I don't think ll will be very forgiving.

TalkinPeace · 14/02/2015 14:59

Lem
the point is that MsM is already in debt - as her liabilities exceed her assets.

Therefore the effort has to be aimed at extending her line of credit in the most efficient manner in the short term so that she does not face larger long term liabilities.

SoonToBeSix · 14/02/2015 14:59

Lem because the rent needs to be paid. The op's rented property may well be mortgaged and the landlord may need the money on time in order to pay it.

FourAndDone · 14/02/2015 15:10

I'm not trying to be a cow lem. I DO agree that getting into debt is not a long term solution.
However if the op is otherwise ok and not drowning in debt already (doubtful if credit history is good) then I don't think an extension on the overdraft will push her over the edge. Hopefully the ex will pay her in a few weeks which may pay the overdraft/cc off.
Always living in hope me.Grin

Just had a little sob, a cup of tea and rang the bank with my best voice. They were very understanding and have increased my overdraft with a small cost (£20/year) plus a 1.47% interest monthly (calculated daily) on any amount borrowed. They confirmed that the standing order for my rent would go out on Monday.

So this gives a little room to breathe! Phew! Now I need to look at bills and see where I can cut down, until my ex repays/starts paying again.

Massive thanks to all! I was feeling really down and you helped me see alternatives. Sending you waves of good karma and hugs!!! Smile

That's great op! I know it's not ideal, but not paying the rent would be a lot worse! Hope you can relax a little bit now.Smile

TalkinPeace · 14/02/2015 15:27

MsMarshmallow
That is a good result.
Now that you have breathing space you need to take a long hard look at your finances.

Out of interest, do you have much in the way of credit card debt?
Just that there is a magic trick that makes it get paid off much quicker for no extra pain on your part ....
it involves converting a direct debit into a standing order Smile

Blazing88 · 14/02/2015 15:32

My overdraft is £1000. I got it very very easily. Just ask.

I checked several sites a while ago... I believe that if you are above 45K per year you aren't entitled to anything?

OP posts:
antimatter · 14/02/2015 16:11

maybe you can't get other beneftis apart from HB (or part of it)
have you checked that?

MsMarshmallow · 14/02/2015 16:18

I am checking now entitledto . co.uk

MsMarshmallow · 14/02/2015 16:29

no, doesn't say anything in the results. I am entitled to child benefit and 25% discount on Council Tax and that seems to be it.

LHA rates calculator. It may give you something different.

MisForMumNotMaid · 14/02/2015 16:35

Sorry that link wont help you end up back at entitles to or turn to us

MsMarshmallow · 14/02/2015 16:45

Turntous says I might be entitled to around £60 per week HB. I will check with the council on Monday, although I should let my landlord know if I was eligible and going to claim...

Thanks for everything!

FourAndDone · 14/02/2015 17:03

Hope that's right op I'm sure that would make a huge difference for you!Smile

youarekiddingme · 14/02/2015 17:15

I'd ask council about HB, apply, get the award (which will go directly to you) and then send a letter landlord informing him your circumstances financially have remained the same but your now receiving some income from housing benefit. Make it clear you've always been entitled, didn't realise but have a proven payment history.

If you tell them your applying they may think your circumstances have changed and become worried abiut further renting to you. I know right now you have an issue - but you've got the money this month and will be ok if you get HB.

Agree as well about getting a proper maintence set up - through CSA (or whatever it's called now).

Legally you have no obligation to tell your landlord. The system is set up so the tenant gets the payment to stop discrimination.
