I have recieved a very intimadating letter today telling me they are going to take my property and sell it - if I do not let them in they can't. As far as I know I do not have to let them in but can they take my car? (or should I hide it)

Maybe it's just me not taking things seriously enough but I feel I can sort it out myself I know I am not doing a very good job of it so far. The CAB are great and I do not have anything against them I just feel I would be wasting their time and resources this is my only debt I do not have loans, credit cards, etc I just had a hiccup in income (DP) for a time but if they would let me I would sort it out. I know I am being stubborn and probably stupid for not contacting the bailiffs over this but my line has been drawn and I will not cross it.

Every time the baliffs come and can't get in, the debt will increase. It is already increased from your original debt in order to pay for the baliffs. The council will not call them off. They need to be paid. You are sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting "la la la" while your debt increases to ever more unmanageable proportions. They will NOT leave you alone. They WILL recover the debt. This isn't some matter of honour ("my line has been drawn and I will not cross it"). It is about your family's financial future. Don't be irresponsible.

Sorry.

Please stop being stubborn, swallow your pride, and go to the CAB to get this sorted immediately. It's dominating your daily routine, and has the potential to have a catastrophic effect on your life. Dodging baliffs, hiding cars, peeking through spyholes etc is no way to live - especially when there is a way to resolve this. There's nothing wrong with asking for/getting help. That's what the CAB is there to do. It won't get better unless you ask for help. Go now. Please.

not read the whole thread - sorry if repeating, but if you look on line on bbc there is an article about a programme that is on later this week, about someone going undercover as a baliff for 9 months and the cons/scams they pull and how they intimidate people etc - worth reading then you will get an idea of your rights vs them. The article makes very interesting reading!

I have just called the council again and spoke to the man who was very understanding regarding DP's work situation he has agreed a repayment plan for the next 3 months and will put the bailiffs on hold, they will not be let off their leads again unless I default on the agreement
Thankyou to everyone who stressed the importance of this to me and forced me into taking action otherwise I might have kept my head in the sand.
I can move the car back now
Thanks everyone
Mumsnet advice and support at it's best

Have re-read my post and it is rather bossy. Apologies.

But I'm glad you've got it sorted.

Well done! You must feel tremendously relieved!

I think I needed a kick up the Ar*e so don't feel bad about being direct or bossy

I am very relieved and also very glad I did not have to speak to the bailiffs because in my little world they are not members of society

Excellent news!! Well done. And I bet you feel soooo relieved now you haven't got to worry about it any more.

Judy1234 · 26/09/2006 21:44

Confirm what they said in writing to the council and copied to the bailiffs and keep a copy of the letter.
Also be aware that they often do have legal rights to seize cars by the way (and seize a huge load of them every year) and they may well be on the road, not your property.

LIZS · 26/09/2006 21:46

Glad you've taken some positive steps to sort it out - do confirm in writing though.
