HELP! Need to know what the take home figure would be for a certain salary!!?

I'm contracting at the moment and pay very little income tax and national insurance (comply with IR35).

BUT i've been offered a staff job with the obvious pay cut that comes with the security.

They have offered me £36k plus £4k car allowance. I don't drive so it would just be for travelling expenses.

Is anyone earning about the same that could give me an indication of what I would bring home each month??????? I don't know if I can accept the job, but its a FANTASTIC opportunity.

any idea what your tax code would be?

crunchie · 31/08/2006 21:38

I earnt approx £36K last year and usually took home between £2k and £2.3K a month (I get comission so it is hard to know)

Toothache · 31/08/2006 21:40

Countto10 I assume it will just be 503L like it is now? No?? Oh I don't know!! Its so feckin complicated!!!

Crunchie... so was that a basic salary minus tax/Ni?

Are car allowances taxed differently? >clueless

MoreTeaAnyone · 31/08/2006 21:40

Yeh I get £38 and get £2230 a month

Toothache · 31/08/2006 21:41

I was thinking it may be about £2500 per month for the £40k... but it seems it won't be that much will it.

Try this

Assuming you are under 65 , married with no student loan (or blind):

£36k = £26,355.18 take home pay a year, or £2,196.26 a month.

£40k = £29,135.48 take home pay a year, or £2,427.96

Gingerbear · 31/08/2006 21:42

you'd be pauing 40% tax on that toothy (you lucky sod!)

Gingerbear · 31/08/2006 21:42

paying!

Toothache · 31/08/2006 21:43

Thanks Hula!

Thats kind of what I thought. Now I don't have H's salary (or bugger all maintenance!) I can't really afford a big cut in my own salary.

but its such a good job. and at H for being such a twat that I will probably have to turn down their offer. They won't go any higher... this was their second offer to me.

Gingerbear - How am I lucky? or were you being sarcastic

OP posts:
Katymac · 31/08/2006 21:45

O WOW - how wonderful

Total Tax due £8199
Total NI due £3260

Balance £24,641 or about £2050 pcm

Katymac · 31/08/2006 21:46

But that doesn't count the car thingie...sorry

The figures are from the PAYE calculator

Toothache · 31/08/2006 21:47

Katymac - Are you joking???? Thats nearly 39% off the whole salary!!

The higher tax doesn't kick in until above £32k ish I thought? >worried

OP posts:
Gingerbear · 31/08/2006 21:47

both sarcastic and jealous I guess. I know it is crap if a single salary, and you are coping as a single parent, but considering the lowly salary I am currently on, and what I SHOULD be on at this stage in my career I must admit I am jealous.
I need to get off my a@@e and bag me a better paid job.

Toothache · 31/08/2006 21:48

PHEW!

OP posts:
CountTo10 · 31/08/2006 21:48

MTA you beat me to it!!!

Tax rates as follows:

first 5030 tax free
then next £2.1k at 10%
£2.1k to £33.3k at 22%
everything above 40% and NI at 11%

Katymac · 31/08/2006 21:49

I did the £36K not the £4 cos I know car allowance affect your allownace but I'm not sure how

I can put the figures in again...hang on

CountTo10 · 31/08/2006 21:50

Hmmm thats based on toothies tax code allowance btw!!!

Toothache · 31/08/2006 21:50

EXACTLY GB!!

I really need to be bringing in 2800 a month to survive and be able to pay off the marital debts that H seems to have happily walked away from.... Oh and now I have massive Solicitors fees gathering coz of that tosser.

Apparently he really cares about his kids. LOOKS LIKE IT EH??? Fleecing their mother for every penny and not paying any maintenance!

sorry rant over

CountTo10 · 31/08/2006 21:51

I'm sure car allow is treated like normal salary -much much better than company car though!!! checking now!!

Toothache · 31/08/2006 21:52

Can someone tell me its a fucking awful offer?

OP posts:
Katymac · 31/08/2006 21:52

Monthly tax is 546 and NI is 263.30

That is about 810 a month

Is that the same as I said ?

£2190 a month? not that close

I worked it out yearly the first time

hulababy · 31/08/2006 21:53

No idea how good an offer it is or not. Depends on what for, for how many hours, and if normal for your job/experience.

PandaG · 31/08/2006 21:55

DH is a tax advisor - he says that the £4K car allowance will be taxed as extra salary, so some would be at 40% - so the figures Hula supplied sound right. YOu may be able to claim tax relief on travelling done for work (not to and from work though)

HTH

Blondilocks · 31/08/2006 21:57

I'd say it would also depend on the risks involved if you stay contracting and the chances of progression & pay rises if you take the job.
