HELP! Need to know what the take home figure would be for a certain salary!!?

I'm contracting at the moment and pay very little income tax and national insurance (comply with IR35).

BUT i've been offered a staff job with the obvious pay cut that comes with the security.

They have offered me £36k plus £4k car allowance. I don't drive so it would just be for travelling expenses.

Is anyone earning about the same that could give me an indication of what I would bring home each month??????? I don't know if I can accept the job, but its a FANTASTIC opportunity.

Phew pandag HMRC was being most unhelpful - I did think as much.

At the end of the day you've got to weigh it all up as hulabay says - it sounds like a great salary to me but it depends on what else goes with it.

Gingerbear · 31/08/2006 21:59

but would the job security be more of an incentive than higher salary albeit less secure as a contractor?
I know a contract draghtsman who has been contracting for 30 yrs and would never consider a staff job. He can finish one job and walk straight into the next one. Could you do the same as a planner? I don't know how the job market is at the mo for your field, I know I could easily find a new job as a chemical engineer tomorrow. Can't you sign on with agencies? - the technical recruiters are ringing/emailing me weekly with positions.

You have to look at everything together. Plus think about job satisfaction, will you be happy? very, very important IMO

Katymac · 31/08/2006 22:01

£6553 + £3156...so £9710...making £2190 Got the same figure twice - that's good I'll do it for £40 now

Toothache · 31/08/2006 22:04

My contract at the moment would be until Sept 07, but its the unpaid time off thats the killer. The money at mo is fab, but I took 2 days off for ds starting school and it'll probably take me 3mths to recover from that. H was bringing in £1200 per month.... I have none of that now and lots of extra expenses as a result of the split.
So another drop in salary would be pushing me to just break even each month.

So I think I will have to turn it down due to my immediate circumstances, although the long term benefit would be incredible if I took the job.

But I just don't have any savings to tide me over until the split is finalised. Plus I'm facing the prospect of having to give H about £15k from the equity in my house!!!!

Its so fucking unfair and unjust. How is this helping the kids and I lead a normal life?

On £40

NI £3192

Tax £7728

Take home £2423 pcm

I got this figure twice too

& people allow me to do the wages

GB - My lack of ability to be flexible as a single mother who doesn't drive really isn't attractive in the industry.... as you know. So although there are Planning Engineers jobs all over the place.... and for £300 per day.... I just can't consider them. Its very limiting.

Would you then be entitled to things like bonus, profit share, pension, sick pay which perhaps you aren't now. Can you get tax credits etc ?Presumably at some point H would have to pay something towards the children if not you ?

Toothache · 31/08/2006 22:10

LIZS - on that salary I would only be entitled to £110 per month tax credits despite the fact my childcare is £720 per month.

And H is only offering £200 per month in maintenance. He was bringing in £1200 per month before we split in June. But I know he was getting his annual rise of 3.1% in June PLUS a grade step-up as he'd done his probationary period as a manager. So his monthly income would have jumped from £1200 to £1450 at least. He is declaring he's earning £1020 per month. ... so I get 20%. CSA will sort it out but not for 3months at least and they won't back date it!!!

[angry ] on your behalf Toothy.

Gingerbear · 31/08/2006 22:22

{angry]
he is an arse toothy.
I know exactly what you mean about being flexible - that is why I am part-time and lowly paid. There was a fab job at a refinery, but no way would I be able to cope with DD starting school, and would lose out in childminder costs for the school run.
What about learning to drive? or is that a road you have been down already?

Gingerbear · 31/08/2006 22:23
Toothache · 31/08/2006 22:27

I can't afford to right now... plus I have noone to watch the kids to go on a driving lesson. I've tried to work it out with my mother... but she can't get to my house after her work until 8pm.... no driving instructors would humour that.

lol at your pun!!!

OP posts:
Avalon · 31/08/2006 22:31

As you're a contractor, would you be able to set off the cost of the lessons against tax? Surely a justifiable expense for work.

Toothache · 31/08/2006 22:32

Avalon - hadn't thought of that!!!!! Thanks!!

If you are on (technically) higher at the moment, isn't that counterbalanced by lower tax credits?

When you balance that agaisnt job security/paid holidays/potential bonuses or share options, does that change the equation?

Even if it doens't, why not say to your employer that although you are interested, your personal circumastances mean that at the moment you can't take up thier offer - but in 6 or 12 months time, you might like to re-consider. That gives you time to get finances sorted out with your ex.
