I'm in £8k of debt . I'm going back to uni in September .

How do I start to get this all paid off? Sad

Ok. What kind of debt is it? Credit card? Overdraft? Loan?
Will returning to uni push you further into debt? Do you have a reasonable chance of making decent money when you graduate? Can you afford to go back to uni?
Sorry for all the questions!

No I'm doing nursing so manageable bursary and decent earning potential .

Credit card

Highest interest rate needs to go first. I'd imagine that's catalogue. The credit card. I think you need to work out what you can put down each month to clear debts and get rid of those 2 first. I'm doing it that way and have three years until being totally debt free from a total of 7k.

Might be worth considering a loan to consolidate all debts, you should be able to get a cheaper interest rate than the card, catalogue and OD at least.

olaflikeswarmhugs · 21/05/2014 18:31

I've just looked and I have 1.5 years left to pay on the loan .

I don't want to do that piece the loan I have was supposed to be to pay off debts but I've just ended up running up more Sad

I have no self control Blush

What rate of interest are you paying on your credit card?

How about taking a credit card with 0% on balance transfers - I think Barclaycard are doing one with 32 months interest free or (something like that).

If you do this then cut the card up straight away so you're not tempted to use it

As already said I would imagine the catalogue has the highest APR so get that paid off first. And get rid of the catalogue.

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 21/05/2014 19:57

I have no self control either! Or HAD none. I got a consolidation loan in my early 20's and frittered it like a twat. When my debts hit their peak I felt like world's biggest fool. At least now, knowing within three years I will have NO DEBTS, I feel I have an element of control - even though it stings how much money I've paid in fees to banks, credit card companies and pay day loan wankers. It's humiliating but it will never happen again, EVER.
My friend however is in the denial stage - keeps being offered more credit and taking it. He's 12k in debt and got 2 expensive holidays booked. He's making himself really unwell and won't talk about it, it's awful to see.
You'll feel so much better knowing you're at least on the road to debt free-ness!

This isn't a helpful response in that it contains no actual advice.... But it might make you feel a bit better. As of this afternoon my total debt is around 23k. Only 2k of this relates to student debt, the rest was frittered away on absolute shit. I do have a plan and I am remaining positive and if I can do it you definitely can!

olaflikeswarmhugs · 21/05/2014 20:05

Oh ann Sad I really feel for you ! What is your plan for it ?

I'm also worried because dh earned 5k more this year than last year so out tax credits have been taken away from us we were getting 45 per week and now we are getting £8 per week . We really relied on them . On paper we earn ok money just over minimum wage each , but in reality we have fuck all because all out money goes on paying off our debts Sad

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 21/05/2014 20:14

I don't know anything a about tax credits as no kids/family, sorry, but is that definitely right? Both earning just over minimum wage and only £8 a week?!

olaflikeswarmhugs · 21/05/2014 20:17

Yes it is they have cut them down . Plus dh went from being on a salary to being on an hourly rate so his wage has increased because he works 54 hours per week .
