NomDePlume · 30/08/2006 19:58

I'm on the laptop, so can't get to my email. My stupid ISP (or should that be ESP?!) doesn't do webmail. Grrrrr. Email me at lhughesattescodotnet. That's my webamil....

We have about two years' salary in cash and shares but our pension situation is a bit dire. This is based on both dh and I having worked as contractors for years, so a lot of cash on hand but not a lot salted away for the future, if you know what I mean.

Now that we're back in the real world, we're not actually saving anything each month, even for ds. So I need to get on top of this and sort things out.

NomDePlume · 30/08/2006 19:58

Well that was a riproaring success, wasn't it ?! Hopefully you can make it out...

hulababy · 30/08/2006 19:59

We have enough short, medium and long term savings/investments to get us through a good few months or so (without having to se'l house or doing anything drastic) should our income stop for some reason.

Piffle · 30/08/2006 20:01

none pointless having savings when you have a mortgage IMO
We are due to pay off our mortgage in 9 years time
then we'll invest and hopefully have some bloody fun!

Gobbledigook · 30/08/2006 20:03

have tried it but also trying to work and cook dinner so may take a while for me to respond again!

NomDePlume · 30/08/2006 20:04

(I have done another thread, I got my alternate email wrong...)

magicfarawaytree · 30/08/2006 21:02

what are savings

Gingerbear · 30/08/2006 21:39

Piffle, but what about having an emergency fund 'just in case'? eg when our boiler died, we were able to go and buy a new one with money we saved - not have to buy on a credit card.

catsmother · 31/08/2006 00:05

Probably about £8-9 pounds in coppers which will sooner or later get raided.

I'm not crap with money, I simply have none spare.

I long to be able to have an emergency fund. Any "emergencies" simply turn into debt .

In a strange way, it is actually comforting to read that the majority of people who've bothered to reply are in the same boat as me. I always imagine that most people I know in real life have at least a few thousand put away, if not more.

We have a few wee pots too. £10 a month for each of the children. £100 a month goes into my Christmas account. £20 a month since DS (3) was born to take DH to Rome for his 40th next year.

Other than that, we tend to do longer term saving eg. we had a 10 year plan which bought our car at Christmas.

Have just cashed in endowments to do some work to the house.

We do have some debt too which seems a bit mad...

fussymummy · 31/08/2006 01:22

We'd have a lot more if my partner were to take charge of the money, instead of me!!!!

Silly man, he trusts me with it!!!

We do have savings, but if we need it we use it.

Judy1234 · 31/08/2006 15:00

I had to give every last penny to my ex husband on our divorce. Completely unfair. He gets huge lump sum and complete freedom from the family as his reward for his abuse and I get supporting us, no savings, a very mortgaged house and no help from him.

Piffle · 31/08/2006 20:02

Gingerbear we have a virgin one mortgage, if you need to free up funds, you simply use what you have paid off early
plus we can cover most things on a monthly basis... WE are not in overdraft and have agood facility available when we need.

fsmail · 01/09/2006 00:02

Nothing but we have equity in the house

Gingerbear · 01/09/2006 11:40

Piffle -that's an offset isn't it? Our mortgage is a first direct offset - they are great aren't they?

Spidermama · 01/09/2006 11:48

Absolutely sweet Fanny Adams. No, less. Significantly less.

I cheered by this thread as I thought everybody else has a massive contingency fund stashed away and I was the only loon living like this.

I'm in complete denial about the furture. Either that or I have a deep and comfortable notion that the universe is abundant and will provide. It depends on which day you talk to me.

fullmoonfiend · 01/09/2006 11:55

£9,000k in an isa. No debts other than 13 years left on mortgae, but no money left each month at all...No pension Have just started putting a miserable £30 a month into ING in a desperate attempt to have some emergency funds. dOOOOOMED, WE'RE ALL DOOOOOOOMED....joins SS rocking in a padded cell.

hunkermunker · 01/09/2006 12:02

One million pounds!

Mwahahahahaha!

(Or rather considerably less than zero... A fair amount of equity though.)
