Lol @ savings, we don't have any at all, well, apart from a couple of pounds in the car ashtray!

But, we do have a credit card incase of emergencies, problem is though, my dh says buying a new pair of shoes for me is not classifed as urgent1

throckenholt · 27/08/2006 19:24

we had about £40k - we were lucky - had a very small mortgage, and paid it off and then accumulated.

However, we are in the process of building a large extension and now have no savings and are heading towards a £50k mortgage.

I felt much safer before than I do now - and am not looking forward to having to pay monthly mortgage fees.

leander · 30/08/2006 10:40

none

CarlyP · 30/08/2006 10:41

we put away some every month, but its general to save for somethngi like a holiday, so it all gets spent again!!!

GameGirly · 30/08/2006 12:34

I found 20p at the station this morning. That's it.

Actually, that's not it: I suppose it should go towards decreasing our almost-five-figure overdraft.

Sayvinks. See? Can't even spell it.

Emergency fund - aim to build up 6 months wages
Long term savings - 10% of salary
Sharesave scheme - as much as we can afford - they are no brainers in terms of the amount of cash you can make.

We are very lucky - small mortgage and good joint income and no debt other than mortgage and DFS sofa 2 years interest free thingy.

Martin Lewis' Moneysavingexpert and The Motley fool are all good places for tips on how/when to save.

Heartmum2Jamie · 30/08/2006 19:09

Zilch, zip, nada, haven't got 2 halpennies to rub together! We have a one account, so our whole account is just one big minus figure, took alot of getting used to, used to scare the crap out of me!!

foundintranslation · 30/08/2006 19:23

About 5000 euros altogether, in two different accounts - one with a minuscule direct debit that we've had since we married, one we put money into that's left over at the end of the month or when I do a translation.
On the other side of things, we still owe relatives a bit of money from our student days which we're paying off, plus dh has student debts he has to start paying off in (I think) 2008 - not sure how much altogether. It'll be a fixed instalment per quarter.

Roobie · 30/08/2006 19:33

Nothing significant. We drip feed an index-tracker ISA monthly - that's about it.

magnolia1 · 30/08/2006 19:35

Not a penny!!!

Never have and I can't imagine we will ever be in the position to have enough left over every month.

I do have a huge blue bucket (actually its about a foot tall) filled half way with change so I suppose thats savings

NomDePlume · 30/08/2006 19:41

We don't really have savings as such, despite a high household income. BUT we do have a very comprehensive pension/s.

Smurfgirl · 30/08/2006 19:44

None, I had £1000 but i spent it on a holiday

I save £90 a month but give that to my mam and dad to save so I absolutely cannot touch it.

I opened a mini-ISA yesterday and plan to save at least £50 a month in that.

My DP saves £50 a month as well.

My aim is that by the end of my degree to have saved about £2000, want to put that into my honeymoon and wedding.

cowmad · 30/08/2006 19:44

about 50k but about to blow it on a business!!
i very lucky dp had this house before we met so i just kinda slotted in whilst keeping salary altho have to admit it is just down to luck not design..

Gobbledigook · 30/08/2006 19:44

You're just a bloody spendthrift NDP - you shop, shop, shop (or is that me? )

NomDePlume · 30/08/2006 19:46

Gobblychops - How very dare you ....

Gobbledigook · 30/08/2006 19:47

NomDePlume · 30/08/2006 19:48

crunchie · 30/08/2006 19:52

I'm not exactly sure tbh. I have so many 'little pots' of money!! Sounds grand, but it amounts to M&S shares (my dad gave me these about 20 years ago, so it's not really savings!!) HBOS shares, I was lucky to have a halifax mortgage before they demutalised. EMAP shares since I used to work for them. PEP taken out years ago with the money from my grandparents inheritance. All told approx £20 - £30K there, BUT bear in mind thsi si not money I have saved

Savings between dh and I are OK ATM - approx £3K. We save £100 a month each here, and although we have just bought some furniture they are OK.

However I have just left my job and as from my last pay packet at the end of AUG I have NO money If I don't start a job before end Spet, October is going to be a rough month!!!

Still if we spend some it will be only money I put away this year.

MrsFio · 30/08/2006 19:53

I have about 300k, its called equity in a house
