Anyone had a new boiler fitted under the grant scheme

And what choice in boiler do you get?

I am having free central heating installed on this scheme, just waiting for them to give me the date when they are coming.

SleepyFish · 03/11/2013 12:33

I got offered one recently and turned it down because quite frankly I don't see why my wealthy landlord should get a new boiler in a property he could ask me to leave any time at the expense of the government just because I am on a low income.
Landlords make enough money to pay for their own boilers. I think it's just another example of the government wasting public money.
My current boiler is old but works perfectly well and my bills are reasonable.

RedHelenB · 03/11/2013 12:45

I agree with you sleepyfish BUT presumably a new boiler would let any tenants save on bills.
Yes please to asking Randall, as I basically just want the boiler replacing and to keep the system as it is.

No problem Helen. Sounds like some companies will do condensing ones though going by some of the others posts so fingers crossed!

(My LL isn't 'wealthy' so hopefully that exempts me from being guilty of wasting government money by making my home warmer and safer for my 2yo child Hmm)

NorthernShores · 03/11/2013 13:05

Sandy - really? What did you have before? The blurb said it only was where there was an existing boiler. I'd be very interested if anywhere helped upgrade old electric heating to central heating.

SleepyFish · 03/11/2013 13:09

Well the majority of landlords do make plenty money, I've paid over £25k in rent on my current property in the last 3 years, more than enough for ll to pay for a new boiler The reality is I could get a new boiler fitted on Monday and he could decide to sell on Tuesday so it's just a matter of principle for me. Obviously if you have a long let and an inefficient boiler then it would be worth it.
I didn't say tenants were wasting government money, I just don't think ll should benefit from their tenants financial situations, as it is them who will benefit in the long term and with private rents being astronomical (well they are where I live) the majority can afford to replace them themselves and if you have a faulty boiler then your ll should be replacing it with or without the scheme.

RandallFloyd · 03/11/2013 13:17

Oh, that's alright then. I don't have any principles.

Sidge · 03/11/2013 13:30

I see what you're saying Sleepyfish.

Luckily I have a long tenancy and a good relationship with my LL, of course they benefit but hopefully so will I. A more efficient, reliable heating system and lower bills I hope!

SandyDilbert · 03/11/2013 13:35

I only have an old combi hot water boiler, no central heating so they are fitting new boiler and 5 radiators for free.

SandyDilbert · 03/11/2013 13:37

btw - apparently a boiler over 8 years old is considered old and inefficient when you are trying to reduce bills/consumption.

NorthernShores · 03/11/2013 17:42

Wow ace sandy. We've just got electric heating and desperately want central but we don't qualify. Just wondered if you'd found a way around it!

SandyDilbert · 03/11/2013 19:49

found a way round it? No, I qualified as per their rules.

specialsubject · 03/11/2013 20:00

wow, good one getting landlord hating in on this thread.

so do tell, why is making a living managing and renting property deemed one step above murder on here?

if rents are high, mortgages usually are too. Houses aren't free.

BTW impressed with all those who have actually managed to get something from the green deal. Pity the fuckwits in government still charge all the VAT on it and have stopped the cheap insulation which could mean we use less energy.

BTW all new boilers need to be condensing unless there is a good reason why not.

NorthernShores · 03/11/2013 20:06

Sorry sandy - I was hoping when you said you were getting central heating put in, there was some way I could also get central heating put in!

I didn't realise you actually had a boiler, just not central heating. Wasn't at all accusing you of anything, was just being hopeful!

I can see you'd fit their rules, and frustratingly we don't. Grr. We have heating and no money to do anything about it.

SleepyFish · 03/11/2013 20:24

Landlord hating? Hardly. I happen to pay two lots of high rent, home and business. Both landlords own several properties, one of them inherited the lot and the house i live in was bought for peanuts many years ago. I have no problem with anyone making a living this way but when you own a property it is the owners responsibility to maintain it. I get on well with my landlord but he hasn't spent a penny on the house in 3 years.
One of the only advantages of renting is not having the costs of home maintenance.
I know that's not the case with all LL and some people are forced to rent due to circumstances but my experiences of LL have generally been with multiple property owners.

SandyDilbert · 03/11/2013 21:04

I qualify due to low income and not having central heating in my house. I don't consider myself lucky to have such a low income tbh! Would rather my OH had stayed faithful and then I would not have qualified for the free scheme.

I am glad to be giving my landlord heating in his home, our rent is low and he is decent to me and my daughter. I will also be glad to have a home which is warm and hopefully an economic boiler too.

NorthernShores · 03/11/2013 21:08

Sandy I think I've unintentionally come across wrong, sorry. Not quite sure how to explain what I meant.

We are very low income, and have no central heating. It seems you actually need a boiler in the house to get it replaced, which we don't have. Out house is cold and we can't afford to put a new boiler in and had hoped this scheme would help. It doesn't in our situation.

I'm glad you will be getting yours sorted.

SandyDilbert · 03/11/2013 21:54

don't worry, it is fine, no need to apologise.

Do you not have a boiler for hot water at the moment? Have you applied for the free boiler?

NorthernShores · 03/11/2013 21:58

Oooh just asked the husband... apparently we do but it isn't a gas boiler - I might see if we qualify then.

Do you ring your supplier or any of them?

glimmer of hope

NorthernShores · 03/11/2013 22:00

Hmm its not a combi boiler. I don't think ours is called a boiler - I think its just a big tank with an immersion heater in it :(

hope gone.

SandyDilbert · 03/11/2013 22:04

no I applied online then local surveyor came out then engineer chappy to assess where and how it will all be fitted.

NorthernShores · 03/11/2013 22:08

Ace! We don't have a boiler so we're excluded. Thanks for the info.

MyTub · 02/12/2013 12:38

I personally had my boiler replaced about 10 years ago under this scheme after a knock at the door.

We had a Worcester boiler which I did not know at the time was a very good boiler replaced with a Ideal Icos which turned out to be the cheapest load of rubbish the fitting company could get there hands on.!!!! It lasted all of 2 years...

Make sure you know whats getting fitted is my advice.

specialsubject · 02/12/2013 12:46

if your landlord is ripping you off, stop him doing so by giving notice and move. Or contact him and talk through possibilities.

there are always alternatives.

SolidGold · 02/12/2013 17:25

Does anyone know how long it takes them to get in touch?

We are on JSA and our boiler is 9 years old and breaks down every year, we filled in an online application last Wednesday, but haven't had a callback yet, although the confirmation stated they would contact us within 24 hours.
