Ours has doubled in the last year to £87 a month. Is this the same for everyone? I'm wondering if I need to cut back on mumsnet time spent on laptops/ computers/ tv/ game consoles etc.

Was about to start a similar thread as have just had an email from eon upping Direct Debit payments to £166 for both gas and electricity and was a bit 😱

Justforlaughs · 21/07/2013 17:39

plasticcups £3000 a quarter!!! I would have keeled over and died! How are you supposed to find that amount of money? Did the local school hack into your supply or something?

1930s 3 bed semi. £120 a month. We have 8 fishtanks up and running though and they eat most of it. Pre fish it was £60 a month max.

missmargot · 21/07/2013 18:08

I've just paid our last quarterly bill and it was £166. In the winter it can be closer to £250 a quarter.

AudrinaAdare · 21/07/2013 18:20

£50 per month on a key meter. Three-bed, four people. Cheaper than where we used to live.

According to British Gas I'm paying the same rate per unit as when I was in my last house on a normal credit meter. We don't have a debt on it or ever have to use the emergency so perhaps that's true? (Would be the first true thing B.G have told me since we moved Hmm)

WMittens · 21/07/2013 18:39

With gas I get charged £38 a month, but my account credit just keeps going up, even in Winter and the buggers don't give any of it back until I phone and have a go at them.

trinity0097 · 21/07/2013 18:44

£35 for electricity and £50 for gas, for a 3 bed 1960s semi, 2 adults in it, we're not particularly mad about turning things off and I run the tumble dryer every day (I swim every week day) and normal washing at the weekends. The gas is probably a bit low, but the electric I'm in credit by about £1!

biscuitsandcheese · 21/07/2013 18:55

My direct debit for electric has just gone up to £96 a month. Everything's electric bar the hob and heating. There's one adult and two children in the week and an extra adult on the weekend. Very small 3 bed newish build with very drafty windows. I can not see how we can possibly use so much. The tumble drier hasn't been on for weeks, nor the heating!

SillyTilly123 · 21/07/2013 19:01

Ours has just gone up from £100 to £111 a month. 3 bed terraced house. Thats with a massive fish tank running and a smaller one. Washer on at least once a day, atm tumble once a week, pc and tv on all the time as well as xbox from 7pm til about 2am (dp Hmm ) Heating/hot water is a combi boiler. Think we need to try to cut back a bit but not sure where Confused

PlasticCups · 21/07/2013 19:02

I am definitely being ripped off. 2 adults in a 2 bedroomed bungalow, out at work most of the time, but I can't change suppliers as I am in dispute with them.

throckenholt · 21/07/2013 19:06

Ours is about £40-45 per month (5 of us, electric cooker, chest freezer, 2 under counter fridges, upright freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, at least one pc on all day, not much tv, not many gadgets but quite a few power tools used frequently Grin).

PeriodFeatures · 21/07/2013 19:08

Jesus effing god. Ours G & E was £177 pcm. Scottish power. Big 3 bed semi. 2 people.

pipsqueakz · 21/07/2013 19:08

5 of us 3 bed semi £90 month dreading the bill over 6wk hols with all of us at home!

pipsqueakz · 21/07/2013 19:10

Throckenholt who are you with if u don't mind me asking?

courgetteDOTcom · 21/07/2013 21:07

electricity is about £10 a month. Three bed house, water run on electricity and always on, I'm an insomniac so there's always stuff going on in the house. Gas is approx £7.50 averaged over the year for heat and cooking.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 21/07/2013 21:14

Bloody hell courgetteDOTcom, would you mind saying who you're with because that is really cheap.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/07/2013 21:36

£80 electric and £70 gas pcm. 4 bed detached, 5 people. Washing machine and dishwasher 1 cycle daily. It's so much, I would love to know who those payinrg less than this are with. I'm with npower.

AudrinaAdare · 21/07/2013 21:41

Please come back and tell me that you meant to type £10 per week, courgette Shock

Ours had got to £250 a month with npower! In fact we moved house partly because of this (300 yer old house build into hillside - very cold, not much natural light) Now in a 5 bed semi - 6 of us, wash/dry cycle everyday, dishwasher daily, 4 children bathed daily, assorted electrical stuff - tv/laptop/tablet/ large fridge freezer etc. We pay £180 a month, which I still think is extortionate - not sure how to reduce it though. Usually only in from 6.30am -7.45 and then 6.30pm onwards. Very glad of the sun at the moment!

karinmaria · 21/07/2013 21:50

£29 per month with Edf for a one bedroom flat. Hot water heated by electric and DH works shifts so its almost always on, TV etc therefore also on at random times.

I normally bully some poor sod in the call centre every January to credit me the money left over on the account as paying by DD does inflate the payments.

Glittertwins · 21/07/2013 21:54

DD set at £47 per month but we are in credit by over £100. DH works from home so 2 computers on for at least 9 hours per day.

Notcontent · 21/07/2013 21:54

I think to pay £10 per month you would have to really limit your use of appliances - e.g. washing machine once a week, small fridge, not using your tv or computer very much.

courgetteDOTcom · 21/07/2013 21:56

Sorry, yes a week Blush

AudrinaAdare · 21/07/2013 22:01

Sounds similar to me then courgette so I'm glad to hear about the gas. We moved in March when it was freezing cold and spent about £20 p.w Shock but I reckon if I continue to pay over £10 during the summer it should even out.
