Very cheeky question - how much money do you have coming into your household per week?

ssd · 19/05/2006 09:39

I know it's rude and cheeky so ignore me if you want!!

We have about £275 coming in per week wages only.

I'm not counting tax credits or child benefits.

Just hard cash!

Bet you are all coy now!

ssd · 19/05/2006 16:15

wow, didn't mean to upset people!

only asked as I was sat this morning worrying about money and knowing I was worrying because we don't have much coming in week to week. Started thinking about how much other people have coming in, but it's not the sort of thing you'd ask a lot of people, so I thought I'd post on the internet and ask virtual strangers. Must say I'm a bit surprised at the stance some of you have, everything and I mean everything seems to be discussed on MN but when someone asks about wages or money it's taken a bit defensively sometimes. Anyway if you don't want to post thats fine as I said I was asking a cheeky question and didn't expect very many replies.

I think it sounds a bit crap if you put up that you have £1000 a week and someone else has £100. That may be one reason why others don't want to post - it sounds a bit like bragging or showing off.

zippitippitoes · 19/05/2006 16:26

ssd it goes pear shaped at some point that's why..and although it's anon it's not really as we all have online personalities

peachyClair · 19/05/2006 17:23

Hmmm, do poeple really mind, or do the better off ones think we do?

its our life choices atm that make us poor-ish, ho hum. Give it three years and I will be earning too.

hunkercaribou · 19/05/2006 17:25

peachy, where's your capital P gone?

dinosaure · 19/05/2006 17:26

peachyClair, I started a thread called something like How much gross income do you need to live comfortably on? and some people got very upset aabout it. I have resolved not to talk about money on mn any more!

peachyClair · 19/05/2006 17:29

My p vanished due to my bad typing after a (harmless- swap thread!) name change... had you never noticed the state of my typing? LOL!!!!!

ALL MN subjects go tits up eventually, the trick is to stop giving a damn

zippitippitoes · 19/05/2006 17:32

there are some good threads on economising and organising debts, you might find the moneysaving expert useful too

nutcracker · 19/05/2006 17:41

Some of you are nuts, it's not like you were being made to post your income.

ssd · 19/05/2006 17:44

yes moneysaving expert I think he's called Martin something is very good.

I still can't understand the reluctance to talk money, I've read threads on anal sex, gay sex with vibrators, God knows what else and here we are getting upset about discussing money. TBH I find it all a bit strange.

Anyway as peachyclair said what we are earning just now will probably change in later years, I've been at home for 8 yrs with the kids so we've lost a big proportion of my earnings, that's probably why I'm always pre-occupied about money.

sorry if I upset anyone.

zippitippitoes · 19/05/2006 17:56

don't think you did upset anyone..as someone else said income details optional! Smile

ssd · 19/05/2006 18:20

true!

It is all relative as to how much your mortgage or rent is a month. I know people who have huge mortgages and once utilities are accounted for have minimum disposable income. Also know friends who have smaller mortgages and more disposable cash. It's a case of swings and roundabouts.

handlemecarefully · 19/05/2006 18:46

"Hmmm, do people really mind, or do the better off ones think we do?"

Okay if you really want to know it's about £25,000 per month. Does that help? No I didn't think so...

Which really illustrates that it's not really (with apologies to ssd) a particularly pertinent question to pose. Perhaps a better one for SSD's purposes is 'Other people earning in the region of 'x', how do you manage'?

Munz · 19/05/2006 19:00

ours has just shrunk by half! we have £850 from DH, £400 from me approx (but only for the next 3 months) and £170 CB & Tax Cr.

fair enough we don't have rent to pay out of that but still have all the other bills not much is going spare - althou for the past 3 month's we've done brilliantly and not gone o/d had any charges and have managed a few quid (literally no more than £10) in the bank come pay day, so over all econimising and online banking's really working for us.

handlemecarefully · 19/05/2006 19:04

Ermm sorry for being pompous in my previous post SSD - bit of a parpy subject for me because I do feel it's all a bit vulgar. Must remove that stick from my arse Grin

TicTacsMum · 19/05/2006 19:07

ssd i can understand why you'd want to post this. I'm actually interested too as i'm just about to go on to no pay for my 2nd 6 months of mat leave.

dp takes home about 2000 per month and my pay was 1200 per month which will stop from this month. Might seem ridiculous/insulting to some but not sure how we're going to manage. I guess no matter what you earn, you tend to live to your means (well we do anyway!)

nightowl · 19/05/2006 19:40

£120 (ish) a week without tax credits or child benefit.

Kathlean · 19/05/2006 19:46

Wow handlemecarefully do you need a friend?? (-:

As everyone says it's all reletive. DP earns a good wage but by the time the mortgage, school fees (as much as the mortgage) and all the other crap we need to pay for (DP is paying around £400 a month petrol for work at the moment)is taken into account we have gone into our overdraft.

Fortunately it is one of those accounts where mortgage, savings and overdraft are all linked so what is in our saving more than covers the overdraft and I could clear it if I could be bothered.

ssd · 19/05/2006 20:09

handlemecarefully, no fault found! You were honest in your post, and yes it is all relative. I imagine in my situation earning say £2k a month we'd be loaded, but of course we'd be living in a bigger house with maybe 2 cars so we'd therefore be living to our means again!
