Had a bill from Npower for 6mths (long story as to why it is 6mths) and it was around £300 estimated. Have rung with meter readings and it is now nearly £600.

I'm in a 3 bed, end of terrace, gch, 1 adult and 3 kids.

Basically, i'll be paying £100 a month for gas and electric.

What's everyone else paying ??

My neighbour had cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and double glazing all in one year. Her next bill after 18 months she got a refund of £159. Had been paying £60 per month including both at the time. I have double glazing, but cannot have cav.ins. or loft. and I shall be paying £71 for both with new prices. 2 bed bungalow. Just me in all day with heating going on/off all day. Gas central heating, new condensing boiler, with high tech room thermostat that modulates the boiler down to background temp once room has gotself warmed up to its temp. on stat.
It does depend on your insulation and if you have a fire.

Ponders · 30/10/2012 12:26

OP, you need to get one of those energy monitors that shows your current usage - then you can switch things off & on to see which ones are the biggest drain, & show the kids so they understand what you're talking about

PersonalClown · 30/10/2012 12:28

Oh please do Nutcracker. I can palm off autistic DS onto you for constant running commentary of what he find on Youtube and a new human cushion for the Staffy.Grin

TheOriginalNutcracker · 30/10/2012 12:32

No problem PC. I can bring Ds with me as he also provides a running commentary of pretty much everything, so perhaps they could entertain each other lol.

As for the staffy cuddles, thats fine by me lol.

Oddly, when I was with British Gas with my 40 year-old boiler, 10 years ago, with no room thermostat, my bills were £37 gas £27 electric =£64.
Now with NPower, as got good deal @ £60 per month for last year. But will now be £71.
Oh, and my radiators in my other rooms are turned down with automatic TRVs

digerd · 30/10/2012 12:36

And dogs give off a lot of heat, and are better than a hot water bottle to cuddle. Think I should get at least 2.

ISeeThreadPeople · 30/10/2012 12:40

No gas, only electric.

Direct debit is £27pcm. And our account is £157 in credit still. Has been since shortly after we moved in 2yrs ago, though reduced from nearly £300 in credit. We use v little electricity obviously. Grin

ISeeThreadPeople · 30/10/2012 12:41

Sorry 2 adults, 2 dc (5yo and 13mo) and live in a 2 bed mid terrace. Supplier is edf and we pay £27pcm by direct debit.

GooseEnthusiast · 30/10/2012 12:41

£25 electric £40 gas. End of terrace 3 bed house with (bad) double glazing. 2 adults, one child - one adult at home all day 5 days a week.

PersonalClown · 30/10/2012 12:42

Would you like the Doodle digerd? 30kgs of big black fluffy warmth?

MissKeithLemon · 30/10/2012 12:47

I pay £95 per month for both from Co-OP. (Yorkshire area prices.)

This works out at over £540 per year less than when I was with those rip off merchants known as E-On on identical usage.

Shop around and switch whenever you find a cheaper price, its the only way.

DinosaursOnASpaceship · 30/10/2012 12:53

1 adult
3 Dc
End terrace 2/3 bed house
Hot air blow heating.

£70 gas (heating is gas) - British Gas
£40 electric - npower

Both on a pre payment metre.

I am forever telling the boys to turn off lights and tvs when they aren't watching them but no one ever seems to listen.

CaptainHoratioWragge · 30/10/2012 12:56

1 bedroom flat, 2 adults £110 pm for gas and electric.

(single glazing, edwardian property high ceilings, shitty insulation)

RightUpMyRue · 30/10/2012 12:59

2 adults
1 child

2 bed quasi semi, GSH, double glazed. With Scottish and Southern, monthly direct debits of:

£30 electric
£50 Gas

We pay that all year round but have only lived here since May so I don't know yet if paying that in the summer will cover what we use in the winter.

Chocaholics · 30/10/2012 13:01

4 bed house 2 adults 1 baby we pay £35 for electric and £45 for gas with British Gas. Was thinking it was expensive but maybe not!

Ponders · 30/10/2012 13:08

ISeeThreadPeople, what kind of heat do you have if no gas & only £27pm leccy?

MissKeithLemon · 30/10/2012 13:36

Ponders, it surely must be no heating. Thats what I'd assumed.

either that or a big shock at some point down the line Wink

Ponders · 30/10/2012 13:40
Grin

or else their house is connected to next door's

MissKeithLemon · 30/10/2012 13:46

I'm sure I could reduce my bills to £27pcm by

Never having any heating on
Only washing clothes when I notice people edging away from me in the supermarket queue
Never ironing ever
Never opening the door to the fridge/freezer
Never charging/operating mobiles/tvs/pcs/laptops
Sitting in the dark
Never using any hot water for washing/showering

But then I'd be miserable and cold and smelly and unkempt and bored Grin

ISeeThreadPeople · 30/10/2012 14:29

We installed a log burner when we moved in. We are very fortunate in that we have had several friends take down trees, we've had fence panels donated to us, removed all old doors etc and we have enough wood to last us about 3 winters. We use the log burner to heat downstairs. We don't heat upstairs. We have blankets and hot water bottles for that.

We have economy 7 and the washing machine comes on in the middle of the night when it's cheaper. No tumble drier.

Hot water is switched on for an hour a day so that we can wash up (no dishwasher) and give the dc a bath. We have a shower but do NOT use it, ever. I have a bath (tiny 1200 bath, uses v little water) or strip wash. DH showers at work.

Only other electric use is the cooker/fridge freezer/lights and the computer (again only charged at night when the economy 7 kicks in). All appliances have a max economy rating too. Oh and the radio. Don't watch the tv more than a couple of hours a week.

We are skint and v frugal.

FreelanceMama · 30/10/2012 14:44

ooh I'm inspired to trim down our use now.
We're on pre-payment electricity with EDF, Economy 7.

Large 1 bed flat, dbl glazing but old old house.
Electricity only - in fact Scottish Power pays me a couple of quid each quarter to check my own gas meter which has been switched off for 3 years!

In the summer 40 quid a month, in the winter can be twice that.

Why it's low - only have a shower, storage heaters, dbl glazed, insulated, no dishwasher, heating and water uses cheap rate.

Why it's not as low as it should be - washer/drier during the day (nowhere to dry many clothes), pesky cat keeps wanting to be let out onto the balcony, rubbish at turning things off, work from home.

BackforGood · 30/10/2012 15:05

£114 pm here, combined gas & elec, with Scottish Power.
Big, old, rambling, 6 bed, high ceilinged house designed and built long before the word insulation was invented.
5 of us, including 3 children who need to be plugged in to 2 or 3 things on a permanent basis it seems and don't understand the concept of an off switch. Lots of tumble drier use, but relatively stingy with the heating (ie, on the days I'm at home, if it's cold, I'll put heater on in one room, not heat the whole house.)

MissKeithLemon · 30/10/2012 15:10

Iseethraedpeople now I am more than simply jealous of your electric bills Envy

I would luff a woodburner but live in a smokeless zone Sad

oooggs · 30/10/2012 22:35

Just had the letter now it has just jumped up to £50.70 Electricity + £28.72 Gas with npower

5 bed detached 2 adults & 4 children
