Title says it all really - I am trying to work out if I am being too extravagant. ATM I think I spend about £85/wk, for 2 adults, 2 primary aged children. Anyone else?

After reading how well you lot budget I'm ashamed to say we spend about £150pw in tescos + bits and pieces through the week + one take-away a week.
We only buy organic meat and dairy and I admit I buy a lot of rubbish.
Now that I'm pg with #2 and taking another 2 years off I should start to be more frugal.

Bozza - you'll get buckwheat in a health food shop. I bought it once, not twice you notice.

I budget for £60 per week for 2 adults and one toddler. Some weeks I spend all of it, some weeks as little at £35. That's a combination of Tesco for mainshop, local shops for top up and have recently discovered Lidl.

staceym11 · 18/01/2006 21:33

as we are living with my parents still the weekly shop is done between us, so for 5 adults and a toddler we spend £100-£120 a week

Art · 18/01/2006 21:55

I try to keep ours under £60 that includes nappies etc. 2 adults 4yo and 7mo. I've started shopping online to avoid all the magazines/clothes/choccie etc. but this doesnt include alcohol or eating out.

Bozza · 19/01/2006 08:53

So did you not like buckwheat DisLocated? I think the bulgar wheat worked OK anyway, although didn't actually have any just what I tasted when I was cooking because I ended up having a sandwich at my Grandad's. But we are having the other half that I froze tonight.

Lacrimosa · 19/01/2006 08:59

£200 only because I am fortunate enough to afford to buy all organic and we tend to eat meat with every meal , organic meat here can be twice the price of meat that is not! I also buy Gluten, lactose and egg free produce for ds as he is intollerant to those ingredients.

spend about £60 per week for 2 adults and 2 DS aged 1 and 2. This includes nappies and wipes for both of them. We have fairly cheap taste in food and only have takeaway/eat out about once a month. Do most shopping in tesco but have very limited choice here - only other supermarket is co-op which is more expensive for most things but we do look there for bogof's etc.

Enid · 19/01/2006 09:39

I spent £43 in sainsburys yesterday and that was for TWO meals how on earth can I cut down price
1 x organic chicken for dh and I
2 x poussins for kids (I know sounds posh but they are quick to roast for tea - they were only £3 for 2)
pack sicilian sausages
double cream
veg and fruit
chocolate, walnuts, eggs for choc brownies (dd1s school fair)
ben and jerrys choc ice cream (essential to fatten dd1 up)
2 x basil - herbs are expensive, looking forward to summer when we can grow them
kitchen roll

Mercy · 19/01/2006 09:43

Enid, do you mean that little lot cost £43

WideWebWitch · 19/01/2006 09:45

Enid every time I enter a Sainsbury's I seem to come out fifty quid poorer even if I only went in for bread

WideWebWitch · 19/01/2006 09:46

I reckon we spend £120-150 ish. Without booze atm. Mostly organic but still.

Lonelymum · 19/01/2006 09:48

We are 2 adults, 4 children and 2 cats and I like to keep the bill below £100. I usually do get it below that but then I sometimes go abit higher, so average a bit less than £100.

That includes most toiletries and cat litter + food, and occasional items of clothing, but does not account for lunches for dh and thre children during the week. School dinners are an extra £21 a week and I don't know what dh spends on his lunch.

Bozza · 19/01/2006 09:49

Well Enid I would have made a chicken last for all 4 of us for 2 days. That would have been a start.

Actually we are having turkey this weekend - I got it after Christmas for half price and it has been in the freezer since. I think it cost about £6 and I will make it last for at least 3 meals I reckon although it was only a smallish one.

Mercy · 19/01/2006 09:53

I think we spend about £80 per week plus about another £10 or so to top with milk,fruit/veg - usually organic. This includes nappies and beer/wine. 2 adults and 2 young kids

Some weeks though it goes up to £100 +

Enid · 19/01/2006 11:46

the chicken for me and dh was tiny (£5.50 - organic) and he had leftovers cold for his lunch AND i made a stock out of the bones

Enid · 19/01/2006 11:47

mercy there were other bits, I got some bread, but that was the bulk of it

Bozza · 19/01/2006 11:51

Ah you see my DH has thinly sliced cheapish cheddar/red leicester/double gloucester on brown baps every day for his lunch. His choice. Couldn't think of anything more boring myself but at least it doesn't cost much. No salad or anything unless I happen to make them occasionally.

CountessDracula · 19/01/2006 11:52

I have this problem too

I reckon on avg I spend £130 a week (not including booze as we don't buy it from supermarket) On top of that dh and I buy our lunch at work, dd eats lunch at nursery 4 days a week. I also feed the dog mince and veggies or tuna or pilchards and veggies, so we have very little waste as she gets anything that is a bit past its best!

nikcola · 19/01/2006 16:37

£60 a week in sainsburys for me dd (4) and dp and meat from hala butchers once a month about £40

went to lidl today for the first time i hated it

iota · 19/01/2006 16:43

I usually spend over £100 in Tescos and various other amounts on bits and pieces during the week, for e.g. I spent £20 in M&S today on tonight's dinner, mine and ds2's lunch and some veg and milk

TBH I don't really worry about what I spend, I just buy what I fancy

waterfalls · 19/01/2006 16:51

About £100 a week, but that includes anything from a supermarket not just food, ie nappies, bathroom stuff, laundry stuff etc.

mumfor1sttime · 19/01/2006 17:00

There are 2 adults and 1 yr old. We spend around 40-50 a week. This including washing powder, milk and baby bits etc.

uwila · 19/01/2006 17:57

Blimey.. I'm a terrible shopper. £100-£150 easily. 3 adults, one child, one baby. And one of the adults leaves from Mon-Thurs.

I've tried to get it down to £90, but to no avail.
