Title says it all really - I am trying to work out if I am being too extravagant. ATM I think I spend about £85/wk, for 2 adults, 2 primary aged children. Anyone else?

You do impress me you know hc - it is bloody hard to eat well on that budget and you never whinge about it.

We spend about £75 a week for 3, inc. cleaning stuff but not nappies. I think it's quite high. We buy organic and don't get out much

mummytosteven · 17/01/2006 09:01

£40/£45 for me, DH and toddler. Thank god DH is veggie - that's how we keep the bills down

rummum · 17/01/2006 09:11

Last week I spent £80 (got some bargins for the freezer)
This week I spent £62
this includes cleaning stuff, and lunch boxes for 4 of us.

2 adults
2 children aged 7 & 9

I shop at tesco's and make a meal plan for each night, I think we eat bloody well and we are all full at the end of the meal. (I've just dusted off the bread maker and have started to make bread rolls) I may need to buy some bread for sandwiches during the week. Hubby and the kids can choose what they want for tea one night a week.

Before my meal plan I used to waste so much food.. and the freezer just got fuller and fuller...

Milge · 17/01/2006 09:14

Big basic supermarket shop once a fortnight/every 3 weeks for rice, pasta, tinned toms, etc - £75
Farmers market every week for veg and meat - £20
milk, bread, etc every week - about £30
organic veg and fruit box once a month = £16.50
I could cut down, buy non traceable meat, but I choose to spend my money this way.
If i tried hard, could feed 2 adults and 3yr old dts on £50 pw.

munz · 17/01/2006 09:22

ok approx - there's only the two adults right now - but won't be changing anything for once the baby arrives.

£80 - tesco.com (incl all cleaning/washing etc)
£30 - butchers (all local meat)
£20 - market - veg/fruit
£20 - bread milk etc.

(althou i've also dusted the bread maker off so will go back to doing my own bread again.)

might also do the odd £20 if wilko's has an offer for cleaning stuff.

I put meat's into portions of two and basically pad it out with veggies/pulses etc - althou DH has now cottoned on and is refusing to have pulses ) we also saved a tonne of money/food by doing this as before we had convience fall out the freezer to the oven foods. both of us are healthier. and hardly any leaftovers!

hotmama · 17/01/2006 09:24

Probably spend about £130 in Sainsbury's/Boots/local farmers market. There is me (38 weeks pregnant)/dp and dd1. I only buy organic meat and milk and try to buy organic fruit where possible - this obviously puts the price up - I could do cheaper but I don't have to but I do shop from a list and very rarely throw any food away. This includes nappies and other baby stuff.

Usually cook from scratch - but do eat well.

Kaloo20 · 17/01/2006 09:38

LOL - I must be doing something wrong, I spend roughly £130 a week on food for 2 adults, (who buy lunch at work) and two children - primary school age who have school dinners and only take in water/fruit as a snack each day.

Meat from Donald Russell - online butcher
Fruit and some vegetables from M&S
Fish mainly M&S or DR (above)
the rest ... Tesco's, although we have recently started using Ocado delivery service / Waitrose

Throw away very little, biggest expense... I cannot stand cheap cuts of meat, and value items.

Should never have read Fast Food Nation !!!!!

Bozza · 17/01/2006 09:46

I budget for £60 a week. This is for two adults, a 4yo and a 1yo. It also usually includes a take away once a month, or a pub meal. DD is in disposables. It also includes booze and cleaning stuff and the delivery charge.

I don't buy organic. I do menu plan and cook from scratch. We eat vegetarian twice a week. This week's menu was:
Friday - sausage, mash, cabbage and leeks
Saturday - Delia's buckwheat and veg pie with crusty bread
Sunday - Delia's pot roast brisket with veg, roast potatoes and cauliflower
Monday - spag bol (also had visitors - 2 adults and 1 kid)
Tuesday - pasta with green garlic sauce (from freezer)
Wednesday - left over pot roast, mash and brocolli
Thursday - not sure what's left in freezer from last week yet

Bozza · 17/01/2006 09:47

Ah kaloo - so I might change then? Am currently part way through Fast Food Nation.

Enid · 17/01/2006 09:49

I spend a fortune on food

munz · 17/01/2006 09:49

boz - what's buckwheat&veg pie?

compo · 17/01/2006 09:50

We aim to spend about £60 a week but it often goes over that if we get a takeaway or eat out. That's for 2 adults and one 21 month old.

Clayhead · 17/01/2006 09:56

£40 - £50

2 adults, dd 4, ds 2

Always cook from scratch, menu plan.

Kaloo20 · 17/01/2006 10:03

off topic

Bozza,

since reading FFN - we don't eat fast food
get to the end and see how you feel !

£60-80, I think. For 2 adults, 3 year old DD and baby. Including cleaning stuff etc. but I use cloth nappies and wipes.

Veggie meals from scratch, but eat loads of fruit. Try to eat seasonally which keeps costs down. Not much alcohol these days.

At the moment I don't worry too much about economising but as my maternity pay ends next month and am hoping to take a career break I may need to get that down a bit.

Bozza · 17/01/2006 11:41

Buckwheat and veg pie. Well , I couldn't find buckwheat in Asda, so actually bought bulgar wheat. Then roasted it in the oven and added to to a pint of water mixed with tomato puree and cooked for a while. Fried off some onion, mushrooms, peppers etc and cooked some lentils. Mixed it all together with some stock, herbs and tinned tomatoes and cooked to reduce some of the liquid. Then put in an oven dish and covered in grated cheese/breadcrumbs and cooked.

It's in Delia's Complete Cookery Course.

FNN - I am less than half way through. Really don't eat much fast food already. Odd Chinese takeaway/fish and chips from local chippy is as bad as it gets.

jennifersofia · 17/01/2006 21:23

Wow! It really varies - thanks for the replies, I am now inspired to try and spend less!

£50 per week. and that is food and nonfood household stuff for family of 4 and four cats!

7777777 · 17/01/2006 22:01

40to50 for me, ds11 yr, ds15mths, dog, four cats (they eat loads)

Gillian76 · 17/01/2006 22:02

About £80-90 but really trying to reduce.

We are 2 adults and 3 children (5,4 and 2)

Hulababy · 17/01/2006 22:08

There are 3 of us here. DD is 3y9m.

I shop online with Sainsburys once a week and spend around £70-80 on food and househoold stuff. We have a lot of alcohol in at the moment so no wine on that.. That would normally add another £10 or so.

We then pick up the odd bit during the week - bread, etc. Milk comes from the milkman. So another £10-20 there I guess.

We eat out at least once or twice at a weekend.

bloody hell ,dont know where i go wrong. our buill is usually £150 plus a week. I do buy organic fruit, veg, milk, dairy etc. Hope dh doesnt see this thread.

mojomummy · 17/01/2006 23:17

I spend around £65-£95 a week. Buy everything on my visa card, so pay it monthly, keeping an rough weekly figure in my mind.

I buy organic milk/butter/eggs/bread/veg/fruit
/rice & pasta

From my local farm shop I buy free range chicken about once a month & have bought a selection of organic meat from an organic farmshop. Due for another visit - I make DD's food - from this.

We tend to eat fish about 4 times a week, then tuna pasta, a casserole & a homemade (prawn)curry.

I don't include wine/beer in this (dh buys a box every now & then) & I don't buy biscuits or crisps (unless special occasions )
