How much do you spend per week on booze?

We're on a strict budget at the moment, but can't resist buying a couple of bottles of cheap (£4.50, but nice! Grin) wine a week. So that's £9 a week! Seems like quite a lot compared to my food budget (£80ish for a family of five, including most toiletries and household stuff).

When we were better off, we could easily spend £20-£25 a week on wine / beer (more of it and more expensive stuff).

How much do you spend?

Probably about 24 euros a week- 3 bottles of reasonably nice Chablis for two people.

SpawnChorus · 08/04/2011 11:26

And how does that compare to your food budget?

We spend about £150 per week including 4 bottles of wine.

winnybella · 08/04/2011 11:38

Probably about 150-180 euros pw- including nappies etc.

mumoverseas · 10/04/2011 11:33

Nothing, can't buy it here! Sad

ineedagoodsolicitor · 11/04/2011 16:29

nothing, I don't drink.

soon to be ex-h, that's a different matter, he probably spends £30/week for beers out socialising and beer bought from the the off-licence/supermarket

Probably not much help in the long run, or really answer your question, but...have you seen the tesco price check thing? Ive just stocked up on wine and magners and tesco have basically paid for me to take it away.

Their promise is if you find it cheaper at asda then tesco will give you double the difference back. So if (for eg) Redwood Creek Chardonnay is £7.79 in Tesco but £5 in Asda, they will give you the difference (2.79) doubled (5.58?) back in vouchers. So, effectively you ahve got that bottle of wine (or other product) for 7.79 - 5.58 = £2.21. At one point, Jacobs Creek Shiraz was £1.01 a bottle. And I got vouchers for larger amount than i actually paid. Wolfblass Yellow Label Chardonnay is £9 something but after voucher works out at 50p ish.

You need to do a bit of planning, but Ive spent some time working it out and benefitted greatly and been able to buy some luxuries. Chcek out moneysavingexpert as they have loads of details about it there

Mousey84 · 11/04/2011 22:01

desperatelyseekingsnoozes · 11/04/2011 22:06

I can't imagine spending £9 a week on booze if I only spend £80 on everything else.

It depends if I am entertaining or not.

RedbinD · 11/04/2011 22:06

£100 ish

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/04/2011 22:07

£5ish, sometimes a little more sometimes nothing.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/04/2011 22:08

£100 on booze. Wow, I'm impressed you can still type Grin

TrillianAstra · 11/04/2011 22:13

Less than £100, more than £9. Don't buy booze every week, but do drink it every week.

SpawnChorus · 11/04/2011 22:44

Desperatelyseeking - yes, that's why I started the thread really. On the one hand 9 quid seems like a disproportionate amount on money compared to.our good budget. On the other hand 2 bottles of cheap wine doesn't seem awfully extravagant. We're non-meat eaters and cook from scratch, so I suppose that keeps the food budget down. Good tip on the wine mousey, but we are addicted to fond of a particular co-op wine!

If money is tight then I'd say 10% of your food budget on booze is a bit extravagent but you are spending £90 just because thats what you weirdo veggies non-meaters do, then I'd say drink away and don't feel guilty Grin

LineOnTheLeftOneCrossEach · 11/04/2011 23:04

Nowt, teetotal.

I do spent about £1.40pw on gingerbread though.

Yeah, we ever go out either, so the two bottles of wine are really from our "entertainment" budget Grin

I think it depends on what you do! Although mine and DH wages are not bad our outgoings our incredibly high so money is often tight but we both work full time, don't go out very much and we make sure our DC have everything that they could possibly need so we do enjoy a Wine and I think it is well deserved!

LaurieFairyCake · 12/04/2011 21:14

£5 - chat en eouf (Red) - waitrose own brand

ThierryHenryismyBoyfriend · 12/04/2011 21:16

£0 on booze. Around £150 per week on food for me, DH and DS.

Chil1234 · 13/04/2011 04:01

I bought 12 bottles at Christmas using a Tesco clubcard voucher swap deal (about £50 or £60 worth) and I've still got 6 left....

SpawnChorus · 13/04/2011 14:05

I'm surprised at how many teetotallers there are! Shock :) Is it a budgeting decision, or do you not drink anyway?
