That's it really. Food shop for me, DH and our 2 DDs seems to take just about all of my monthly budget. I wondered what other people's shopping costs is- I may have to ask for more money for household expenses as we never seem to have enough...

I calculate our food bill monthly, it is usually around £360-400. This does include wine/beer, kids packed lunches/pet food and the odd 'treat', all cleaning stuff etc. That said, I think it's too much and know of folk who manage much better on less. This month we are eating more veggie meals and generally shopping around more for bagains. I regularly trawl the 'reduced' section in Waitrose/Co-op. It's time consuming though, the shopping around, wish I could get everything at a decent price under one roof!

GazzasDressingGown · 13/07/2010 15:01

When dp was alive we generally spent £80 per week that included petfood, nappies for dd toiletries cleaning products and groceries.(am a Lidl/Aldi girl) for 4 of us.Now just 3 and a little less.

llareggub · 13/07/2010 15:03

I spend in the region of £60-£80 per week on food shopping. I don't buy nappies or wipes though. We don't drink either.

Baileysismyfriend · 13/07/2010 15:07

We are a family of four, two adults, one DD aged 11 and one DS one year old and we spend around £110 a week.

Alicetheinvisible · 13/07/2010 15:12

How old are your DC?

There is DH, me and DD (2.8) and ours is about £60 a week (at Waitrose)though i tend to get nappies at Boots. I am pg though, so technically there are 4 of us as i am eating way more than usual

There is a thread going atm where people are being less wasteful, using whatever is in their cupboards. Would that help you at all?

Jackstini · 13/07/2010 15:13

About 120 a week. dd is 4, ds 19mo

cazzybabs · 13/07/2010 15:15

I think we spend about 80-100 a week, but 2 of the children and me eat at lunchtime at school so I don't cook in the evenings...so it is more like £100 in the holidays for 5 of us (and 2 cats) shopping at Waitrose

becaroo · 13/07/2010 15:22

This thread is making me feel MUCH better!

We are a family of 4, me, dh and 2 dc aged 7 and 21 months and we spend about £100/120 a week and I was beginning to think I was the only one spending that much!!!

Obviously, I have to buy nappies etc for ds2 and that includes all toiletries and cleaning products as well but I would dearly love to get it down to £80 per week. I shop at asda and tesco.

Manda25 · 15/07/2010 18:16

£120 a week here too - but i think that is too much ...if i ever needed to cut it down i think i could get it to about £80. (2 adults, 19 yr old, 7 yr old & 2 cats)

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/07/2010 18:19

About £100 a week - me, DP and teenage DD.

pirateparty · 15/07/2010 18:20

About £100 all in for me, dh and ds (19 months) - nappies, wine, cleaning stuff etc. More if we have people round for supper, less on a good week.

matumble · 15/07/2010 18:22

around £40 a week for me, dh, 3 dd's 5,3,1. things are tight though i normally spend £60 £70.

LacksDaisies · 15/07/2010 18:23

We were spending too much (£140ish) but have cut it down to about £90 a week, but that is for 2 adults, an 8yo and 2 small DC.

It helps if DH does the shopping as he is a stickler for The List, whereas I'm a lot more fluid and will grab things that look nice whether on the list or not, and will remember things that I forgot to put on the list as I shop.

Menu planning is key, as is being organised so that you can say, use the leftover chicken in a curry or risotto etc.

And we switched to shopping on ALDI. Lots of people will say it isn't any cheaper, but I regularly check it against Sainsbury's and it's usually about a third cheaper for the same, if not better, quality (comparing own brand to own brand) and they do the most delicious little Nuremberg sausages that are gluten free.

nagoo · 15/07/2010 18:25

£80 a week. No nappies, and no booze.

toccatanfudge · 15/07/2010 18:29

it's 4 of us here, 1 adult 3 children (but oldest one eats more than me ). If I throw some alcohol, and other extras in then around £70-80 a week (including nappies, cleaning stuff etc)

If I'm strict and stick to a plan usually around £40-50

tutu100 · 15/07/2010 18:29

Ours is around £120 a week, that includes household items like loo rolls, cleaning products etc but not nappies. Our's is higher than it could be as ds2 is dairy intolerant and I am gluten intolerant so the specialist foods we need add quite a bit onto the bill.

nancydrewrocks · 15/07/2010 18:33

One adult two young children here and I spend about £750 per month in Sainsbury's - that covers cleaning products, toiletries and alcohol as well as food.

I know I need to be stricter....

WouldYouLikeSomeTea · 15/07/2010 18:34

Too much. £400-£500 a month including booze and cleaning stuff. This includes most lunches for all of us.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 15/07/2010 18:37

We are 5 - 2 adults, 3 DCs (although one has the appetite of an elephant. We spend around £350-£400 a month, inc. packed lunch stuff and toiletries. We don't drink or smoke thankfully - we'd be skint!

MarionCole · 15/07/2010 18:38

Two adults, one toddler, one teenager, weekly shop is around £50 plus probably another £10 in bits. We don't drink and there are no nappies.

bibbitybobbityhat · 15/07/2010 18:41

2 adults and 2 children aged 9 and 6 (one has packed lunch, one has school dinners) and one cat. We spend about £120 a week excluding milk. We drink too much wine, though.

HouseofCrazy · 15/07/2010 18:55

£50. maybe £60 on a big week.

RabbitAndCo · 15/07/2010 18:58

£75 p/w

We are 2 adults and 2 DC, one of whom 18 months so still buying nappies.

thighsmadeofcheddar · 15/07/2010 18:58

£100 a week, including nappies, cleaning products, toiletries and booze.
Sainsburys for main shop and then Waitrose top ups for fruit, veg, delicious bits.
