No period after d&c - HELP worried sick

Hi all, it’s been 8w2d since my D&C and I’ve had no bleeding. I had 2 occasions, one few days ago and one 4 weeks before that where I’ve had INTENSE cramps low down, pain like I’ve never felt before. They lasted about 3 days then went, I just managed them with codeine. I’ve gone down a rabbit hole of ashermans syndrome and have worried myself sick - I can’t stop crying, I’m not eating and my GP won’t help me. I’m lost as I just don’t know what to do. Anyone has similar and it was a positive outcome? Xxx

No definitely not, I’m minimum 14DPO and stark white. Had sex twice but tests all totally negative. X

I had SMM for a MMC on 23 July and haven't had a period since. I think I've ovulated twice (testing but missed the peak) had 4 days of the lightest bleeding end of August but nothing at all since. Got in a right panic about Asherman's syndrome and saw a GP last week. She's referred me for an ultrasound this week and a blood test. Can you go back to your GP?
They say your period should come back within 4-6 weeks but from what I've read everyone is different and hormones can take a while to settle back down. I'm turning 39 this week and I'm very worried that was my one shot (first pregnancy). I'd definitely recommend going back to your GP if nothing has changed this week. Can you see another GP? Wishing you all the best, honestly I know what it feels like to Google and read on here.

I read your post and had to share my experience. I had a missed miscarriage and a d&c and, like you, never got my period back. I had cyclical pain for several months and got fobbed off by various doctors, including gynaecologists. It was Ashermans - and I too was mortified of that.
it was a tough time and I honestly thought I’d never recover. I ended up having two operations, one by Dr Adrian Lower in London and another in another country. I have since carried my son to term.
i just wanted to say that even in worst case scenario (Ashermans) there is hope.

Butterfly8719 · 14/10/2024 06:50

@WildFinch thank you for sharing and sorry your are going through this too. It’s absolutely draining isn’t it. I am so so glad that your GP has taken you seriously and you have an ultrasound this week. I am going to push them this morning and if no luck will go privately. I am 37 and this was my first pregnancy after 3 failed rounds of ivf, all hope I had has been dashed and I’m so down 😔

@WildFinch good luck and please let me know how you get on xx

@CrankyRunner sorry you went through that but so delighted you have your son - thank you for giving hope. I am truly devastated as I had 4 hour surgery in May for endo after 3 failed rounds of ivf - fell pregnant naturally and then had an MMC. I feel like ashermans would be the end of the road with my history, pregnancy after the miscarriage felt like my last chance. I am sure this is ashermans as my periods are normal clockwork and the cyclical pain I am having is like clockwork - the pain is unbearable though.

do you recommend Dr Lower? He doesn’t take my insurance provider so I’d have to pay 😵‍💫 how come you then went abroad?

thank you xxx

CrankyRunner · 15/10/2024 08:24

Apologies for delay…
please note that Ashermans does not show on normal ultrasound.
I highly recommend dr Lower - he is THE expert on Ashermans. I went abroad because I was living abroad anyway - I came back to the UK for the (privately paid for) surgery.

Theres more to my story: prior to Ashermans I had had 5 miscarriages, and 3 D and Cs. I honestly thought it would never happen. There is hope!

Figtree11 · 15/10/2024 22:47

How long ago did you test negative after the d&c @Butterfly8719? It took me 10 weeks to get a period after my d&c earlier this year. I was so worried, and then one day I had cramps driving to work & it had started

WildFinch · 16/10/2024 09:09

Thanks everyone for sharing their stories. I had my ultrasound this morning and she said my womb lining looks cystic and is thickened. she described it as an overgrowth of lining. She doesn't think it's retained products from my miscarriage but it could possibly be. My feeling is it's hormonal imbalance. I actually started spotting brown blood this morning so part of me is hoping it'll right itself with a big bleed now. I've got a blood test booked but not until next week.

@Figtree11 have you had regular periods since then?

Mum23boys1987 · 16/10/2024 10:39

I spoke to my ob yesterday about the risk of ashermans and she assured me it is very rare and not so common nowadays since aspiration was the preffered method over curettage.

I’ve also had the Ashermans fear in a very similar circumstance to you.

First to say periods sometimes just take a while to return, which is awful when you’re waiting and hyper aware.

I had a hysteroscopy on my health insurance (not with Dr Lower) to see what the situation was first, then was going to go to him for treatment if needed. Thankfully the hysteroscopy showed no Ashermans, I think it’s the best way to know conclusively.

I was the same age as you at the time, had two rounds of IVF which didn’t work and then got pregnant naturally and gave birth just before I was 40.

I remember all too well how horrible this time was. You will get through this and be okay one way or the other.

Figtree11 · 16/10/2024 11:11

@WildFinch hopefully the spotting will help clear out. No not yet got regular periods, but seems to be improving in length each time. Most recent cycle is 45 days

It took me about 3 weeks after my D&C to test negative. So I’m probably about 6 weeks since my negative. I think the thing I’m worried about the most is that I ovulated and then 2 weeks later has this EXCRUTIATING cramp and no bleed. Made me think blood couldn’t get out? It was super low down, I was on all 4s and had to take morphine! So weird.

Oh good news!! And good news about the spotting too 🤞🏼🤞🏼 I have everything crossed. It’s so upsetting when you want to move on. Please keep me posted. My scan is Tuesday x

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful good news story - and sorry you went through what you did to get your miracle. I am 3 rounds down, 4 hour endo surgery, one natural pregnancy which resulted in this miscarriage - I’m so desperate to move forward, you give me hope xxx

It certainly can end happily. I really would recommend the hysteroscopy to get a clear picture of what’s happening in there.

Hi @Butterfly8719 sorry for not updating I lost track a bit on here. I had an ultrasound last Wednesday and she said my endometrium was thickened and cystic. She didn't think it was retained tissue though, more likely hormonal imbalance. I started bleeding on Thursday, it was very heavy for a couple of days. But slowed up now. I've got a blood test on Friday to check hormone levels and another ultrasound to see if all the lining has come away and I'm starting with a blank canvas so to speak. Basically I think my body has finally kicked into gear and I'm hoping we can start TTC again. It's been exactly 13 weeks today since my surgical management so a long process.
Have you spoken to a GP again? How long has it been since your D&C now?
Thank you for checking in x

Oh that sounds so promising that you had a bleed 🤞🏼🤞🏼 hopefully your body starts to do its thing now, it’s been a long old journey for you. I had a scan and they said everything looks normal, lining looked ok… I am seeing a specialist week after next, I also deffo ovulated a couple of days ago, so hoping I get my period. It’s been 10 weeks now, really want to move on 🤍 sending love and hope, keep me posted xx

Hi, sorry I know this is quite an old post but just wondering how you got on? I'm in a similar situation (I've had 3 periods and I'm bleeding some but only for a few hours) and it's been 3 months since my d and c. Scared to TTC Incase I have another misscarriage if it's ashermans, poor uterine lining. Waiting for NHS to refer me but have to have the transvaginal ultrasound first as protocol 😣

Thanks 😊

WildFinch · 01/07/2025 20:36

I'm wasn't the OP but I finally had a period 3 months after my MVA. It was extremely heavy, I guess almost 3 months worth of lining will do that. After that my cycle returned to regular. I got pregnant in Dec which sadly ended in an early miscarriage. I am currently 9w pregnant for a 3rd time.
What makes you concerned if you've had 3 periods? Presumably your pregnancy tests are negative now? I got myself in a right panic as I'd had no signs of a period but it was just my hormones readjusting after the shock of MMC and MVA. From what I've read Ashermans is very rare and usually after having several procedures. Hoping for the best for you x

NeatZebra · 02/07/2025 07:12

@WildFinch I'm sorry for your losses and congratulations on the pregnancy 💕. I'm worried as my periods have only lasted about 5 hrs, which can also be a sign, especially if they stop and start as it indicates a blockage. My gp told me it's rare but I looked on Dr lowers page who is aparantly the go to ashermans Dr in London and he said you have a 30% chance after d and c for mmc. Aparantly it's really under diagnosed and often brushed off as unexplained fertility, and you don't get appropriate testing (hysteroscopy or SIS) unless you really push for it xxx

WildFinch · 02/07/2025 19:35

@NeatZebra sorry to hear this. It's so hard isn't it. I've found I really need to advocate for myself and push to get any miscarriage treatment. Have you been referred? I had an MVA rather than D&C and from what I've read there is lower risk with MVAs. Hoping for a positive outcome for you, at least some answers!
