Early Miscarriage Symptoms

I’m early on in my pregnancy and just started experiencing brown discharge, it’s gradually getting darker and thicker and I’m experiencing cramping, I was wondering if anyone who’s had a early miscarriage could explain their experience as I really can’t tell if it’s normal or not x

honestly, it could be perfectly normal, it could be the start of a miscarriage. unfortunately, it's impossible to know without either a scan or tracking HCG. This limbo land is horrid. Contact your local early pregnancy unit and try not to stress. If you have sudden, bad pain, then go to A&E.

Hello,

I am sorry you are going through this 😞 this is how mine started. But it doesn’t mean it’s a miscarriage for you. Contact your local EPAU, likely you may have to wait for a few days for an appt. if you can is going for a private scan an option?

Thinking of you

Sorry I didn’t see this reply, this is spot on. Or if your bleeding dramatically increases and there is a lot.

Mommato3xx · 10/06/2022 15:47

personally I would say this is totally normal.
with my first baby girl (I had mc x3 before her)
I bled from 8-12 weeks light brown - dark brown
i then bled very heavy at 20 weeks into a catheter (my kidneys stopped functioning during this pregnancy) delivered at 41 weeks healthy
with my 2nd girl I bled from 6 weeks almost like a discharge but very thick and very dark brown
I went to epu for a scan and they found a heamatoma besides baby, they told me it will burst on its own, but they can’t tell me if baby will survive or come out with it
at 18 weeks I was shopping and it burst, blood everywhere bright red I got straight back to epu and baby was still there with a strong heartbeat and even able to confirm baby girl again.
the dark discharge continued for a good amount of the pregnancy on and off, she was born early at 36 weeks but perfect health other than jaundiced
i then had a boy last year and I bled like normal cycles, I didn’t actually find out about him until 27 weeks due to “normal cycles” - I’m very slim too but literally not even a bump he was well hidden!
so as frightening as I know it is, try not to worry unless the blood becomes bright red and heavy associated with cramps
ever since I delivered my 2nd girl I now get this thick blood alot inbetween cycles
ive worried myself sick with cervix troubles etc but I’ve had checks and everything is normal
sometimes for some of us this is just normal
hope your ok x

JuniperandI · 10/06/2022 15:58

I don't want to worry you but I've had 3 chemical pregnancies and all mine started light and got heavier. I ended up bleeding red and heavy for 2/3 days.

All you can do is keep an eye on it and book a HCG blood test in the meantime. I hope everything is OK ❤

Margo34 · 10/06/2022 20:29

I'm going through the same at the moment. This is my third experience of miscarriage (2 this year). They've all started the same for me - spotting dark brown that gradually got stronger then red, much like a heavy long drawn out period with a few clots and associated cramps/nausea/lower back pain. The last MC I had was traumatic as I was further along, passed the sac in tact and bled for 2wal after. This time I'm not much over 5w.

Izzyboo1234 · 10/06/2022 20:54

@Margo34 I am so sorry, I have just come to the end of a MC 😞 so crappy.

@Pink1314 I hope you’re okay

Pink1314 · 10/06/2022 21:04

@Izzyboo1234 @JuniperandI @Margo34 @Mommato3xx @ZoeQ90 so far still just brownish discharge and light cramping but I’m keeping a eye to see if it gets worse
xx

Hi everyone pretty sure I’ve definitely mc’d, woken up this morning foiled though my pants and shorts with blood, does anyone have any advice on what I should do and contact ?

Angharad78 · 12/06/2022 07:48

OP, I am so sorry. Best phone 111 and try to get a referral to the EPAU (early pregnancy assessment unit)? Something similar happened to me earlier this year and I spoke to a midwife directly.

ZoeQ90 · 12/06/2022 07:53

Ring your early pregnancy unit. If they don't work on a weekend, you may have been given an alternative number, otherwise try your community midwives or the hospital. Or try 111. They may want to scan and/or check your HCG, depending on how many weeks you were.
I am so sorry you're going through this and hope you get confirmation soon, the limbo land is horrid.

ZoeQ90 · 12/06/2022 07:54

O, if you're in severe pain go to A&E, due to the risk of an ectopic (but try not to worry)

Margo34 · 12/06/2022 21:12

Call your GP and they'll advise, or if you already registered with community midwives then contact them.

Not every area has a EPU / EPAU that accepts direct contact or self-referrals from patients.

Sorry you're experiencing it, the emotional side hits me like a train. Be kind to yourself OP.

Hi, if anyone could help it would be great, just reading your comments on here, I took 4 pregnancy test on Thursday and they all come back positive, Saturday evening I started light spotting thought it was just implantation bleeding, unfortunately tonight I have experienced a blood clot, does this mean a MC?

There is honestly no way to know at home. It requires ultrasound and/HCG monitoring. It could be normal, it could be the start of a miscarriage. If your EPU takes self referral, ring them, otherwise your GP. If that's no help, try 111.
I'm sorry you're going through this and hope you get clarity soon. Take.care

acX · 12/06/2022 21:41

Thank you so much x

Pink1314 · 12/06/2022 23:01

Update- I went to a&e as advised by the early pregnancy unit, they took a urine sample and blood tests, the urine sample actually came back negative which I was shocked by, my blood test results showed I had a hcg of only 6, they couldn’t confirm or deny I was having a miscarriage, they rang the early pregnancy ward and explained all of my results and they said as I was so early in my pregnancy and the symptoms was experiencing they were pretty sure it was a miscarriage and advised I go home and take a pregnancy test in a weeks time xx

@Pink1314 I am so sorry 😞 how are you doing? 💐

ZoeQ90 · 13/06/2022 23:03

I am so sorry you're going through this. It's so hard. Take your time working through your feelings and be gentle on yourself.

I felt an unexpected sense of relief after confirmation, at least I had certainty and could start dealing with it. The reality really hit me a week or two later.

Caz04 · 19/02/2023 17:59

Sorry to jump on here but wondering if anyone’s had a similar experience that resulted in a healthy pregnancy as I am all but confused and sitting in limbo for 2 weeks until my next scan.

I had a positive test 31st Jan which suggested I was 2-3 weeks along. 12th Feb I start heavy bleeding, cramping and clotting so went EPU, a 5 week sac was there and been told to go back 1st March. Next day I passed a huge clot that went straight to the back of the toilet so couldn’t investigate it. Since, I have still been bleeding but not as heavy, more mildly and less clots. Mild cramps here and there. I have been doing pregnancy tests like a insane women, waiting for that faint line to start appearing but still dark. I’m urinating every 20 minutes, hungry constantly and getting another spot on my face each day.

Not sure if giving myself the hope is going to crush me more when there’s no heartbeat in the next scan or if there is reason to keep the hope.

Any one had a similar experience?

It's probably a good idea to start your own thread about this.

Sorry - that was very abrupt of me.

I'm so sorry - I should have realised that. Forgive me.

At the top of this thread. click on "START NEW THREAD" then write your OP and post it.

That's if you're using a laptop.

If you're on the app. on your phone, go to the top of the thread and click on "MISCARRIAGE/PREGNANCY LOSS" - then click on the + sign, and then click on Start New Thread.

Does that make sense? Sorry.

In case you don't succeed in starting your own thread, in answer to your question, some women do bleed quite a lot in early pregnancy, and there is nothing wrong.

I had a lot of miscarriages myself and bleeding was always terrifying. Sometimes it was okay and sometimes I went on to lose the baby. I had four babies eventually and a great many miscarriages, too.
So just because you're bleeding it doesn't mean all is lost. You still have pregnancy symptoms which is a very good sign.

I hope very much that your scan goes well.
