Recurrent Miscarriage Climic - referral

heyhop · 17/07/2021 15:21

Hi there, just wondering if anyone has managed to get referred to a NHS Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic after 2 miscarriages rather than after 3?

(I've had two consecutive miscarriages and I'm over 35, but I think the norm is to be referred after 3 miscarriages?)

Many thanks!

I read somewhere that you can be referred after 2 if you are over 35 or been trying a while before getting pregnant.

The link above is to Manchester NHS but I'm sure I've read it in other NHS trust leaflets.

My motto in life is if you don't ask, you don't get. Have you asked your GP?

I did at 39 after two years between pregnancies and subsequent losses. The registrar referred me to the fertility consultant during my second miscarriage who did all the tests for recurrent miscarriage as well as all the tests for fertility.

I had a further loss I after 18 months which was sent for karyotyoing and histology. I have now been referred for ivf.

Thanks, I had seen the Saint Mary's (Manchester) criteria but was just wondering if a few of you ladies might have been referred after two or had found it difficult. Totally agree, if you don't ask, you don't get, just wanted to see what other women's experiences were before I ask my midwife! Thanks!

I'm sorry for your losses Flowers

I was referred to the RMC after two consecutive mcs (I had one before my DD so it was three in total). I was referred by the midwife at the EPU who spoke to me after my last mc and not my GP. The consultant did say that I didn't technically meet the criteria when I had my first appointment with me, but she was hardly going to turn me away. I'm now 27wks pregnant and all is well so far.

No harm in asking! Good luck.

Thank you and thank you for sharing your journey, it must have been tough for you. Getting pregnant and staying pregnant can be such a mission. Congratulations on your current pregnancy! 💕From which week did you get support from the Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic during this pregnant and what did they do/give you?

Many thanks again!

@heyhop thank you for you kind words and sorry for your losses too.

I find that the GP pretty much act as a gatekeeper and so everything by the book and won't ask if it's not protocol (my experience is not great with my GP at the moment)

The registrar and EPAU nurses were super helpful as they all work as one team in the gynae and obstetrics ward. I would call EPAU and see what they say the nurses were so specialised at my unit.

marplemead · 18/07/2021 21:20

My first appointment was coincidentally the day after I got my bfp, so I was prescribed to start 400mg porgesterone pessaries twice a day. I also had fortnightly scans at 4, 6, 8 & 10 weeks. I came off the progesterone at 12wks and told to start 150mg of aspirin. I think I would normally have been discharged at this point, but I have other risk factors, so have had a growth scan at 16wks and will have them at 28, 32 and 36wks. I'm not sure if any of this has made a difference, but having the extra monitoring has been great for my mental health, which was pretty low after my last mc.

I think a sympathetic GP might refer you, or you could go through the EPU like I did.

Thank you, I'm just so worried I'll miscarriage again, so really would like to get referred. Will talk to my midwife tomorrow and ring the EPU too and have a chat with them and see what they suggest.

Very much the same relationship with my GP unfortunately, she didn't even seem aware that you could have progesterone pessaries prescribed..

Hope everything goes swimmingly for you now! Sending love 💕

So as soon as you had a positive pregnancy test, did you just contact the EPU and asked to be referred rather than wait and ask your midwife at your booking appointment?

I managed to get the progesterone pessaries prescribed by my GP but only after I asked my fertility doctor to write to her (so wasted quite a few days there!) I'm using the pessaries now for 12 weeks but wondering about baby aspirin, so would like to be referred so I can ask about that. And early scans would be wonderful for my mental well-being too.

How many losses did you have, if you don't mind me asking.

Thank again!

I was referred after my last mc, and the first appointment came through quite quickly. I was already pregnant again, so I've been consultant-led from the very beginning. I wouldn't wait until your booking, as there can be a wait.

I had a loss before having my DD, and two consecutive ones last year, so three in total. All my bloods came back as normal, so there hasn't been anything in particular that has been identified as being the cause. So who knows whether this pregnancy would have progressed.without intervention, but I'm very grateful for the additional care and like to think it has made a difference to the outcome.

Thanks again for sharing and so sorry to hear about all your losses. Each individual loss is so difficult to accept, isn't it. Hope your monitoring and support has been reassuring for you and that you have felt looked after. I went for an early scan at 8 weeks and they could only see an empty sac. I have to go back for another ultrasound in two weeks time. Feeling very worried but trying to stay positive.

I'm sorry you are having such a worrying time. Could you have your dates wrong? All the best for the scan Daffodil

Chel194 · 27/07/2021 14:09

Hi guys, after some advice here.

Currently 4 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. First baby born in 2014, so been a long 7 years since I was last pregnant.

On Thursday, I started with what I thought was my implantation bleeding, nothing on a pad just when wiping started off brown and then sometimes red/pink. Had this for a good few days, yesterday (Monday) I started bleeding like it was my period, with abit of uncomfort on one side of my abdomen. It’s not leaking into a pad as of yet but everytime I wipe its there bright red/period type.
I have an emergency scan tomorrow but I’ve got my head around that they’ll be nothing to see and obviously thinking the worse.

Has anyone else experienced this and gone on to have a baby at the end of the pregnancy.

Ty

Thanks again for your kind words! I'm dead certain regarding my dates, but I guess it depends a little bit how you calculate them, if I use LH surge dates + ovulation date then I could possibly be a week out, rather then using my first day of my last period. Let's see, another week to wait for my scan...time is going so slowly..!

Hey guys, I had my scan on Thursday, unfortunately nothing found no sac.
Since then had bloods done, first day of HCG was 112, then needed repeating which was 150. Had bloods done again yesterday so waiting today for yesterday's results.

Had no bleeding since last Friday but not feeling optimistic with my HCG levels being so low but we'll see. X

Hi @heyhop, I managed to get a referral from my GP after two miscarriages - I actually rang a private clinic and they advised me to try this first, which was kind. I had lots of problems with ongoing bleeding with my second MC so I think that also ‘helped my case’ for the referral. While I was waiting to be seen I got pregnant again and contacted the RMC and they prescribed cyclogest- this was from when I was 4 weeks plus a few days. Unfortunately this turned out to be a chemical pregnancy.

I had to wait a few weeks after this for things to go ‘back to normal’ then had the RMC tests which showed high NK cells. I had to take hydroxychloroquine plus aspirin for six weeks before we could try again- it took a couple of cycles but I’m now 26 weeks (I also took cyclogest from ovulation and for the first 16 weeks). So it looks like for me I needed to be on the medication even before conception - this may of course be a totally different issue than for you.

Wishing you all the best with this pregnancy Flowers I would advise being as pushy as possible from now on whatever the outcome. Xx

Hey lovelies, unfortunately not good news from me. Hosp ConfiRmed today I miscarriage, HCG levels are falling now and getting more pain and bleeding which is a shame as me and my partner wanted this baby so badly after trying for 2.5 years but hopefully we'll get a rainbow baby.

Honestly thank you for even replying to my messages guys, you eased my mind for a few days with your hopeful replies and stories but honestly you have all helped my mind and anxiety a little. God bless you all. Form this young mummy of 1 from UK.

Hi Chel194, so, so sorry to hear this. It's so hard getting pregnant and staying pregnant for some of us, I really feel for you, but as you say hopefully there will be a rainbow baby whenever you're ready. How old are? I've had a couple of miscarriages in the past but went on to have my fourth baby at the age of 45 and now at 48 trying for our 5th. I got my 2nd ultrasound on Thur, I fear a miscarriage but that won't stop me trying for another one. Sending love 💕 X

Hi guys,

I've had 2 miscarriages within 6 months trying for my first baby. I've not been offered any referrals yet as the hospital said I need to have 3 miscarriages to be referred. Thinking of getting my NK cells checked out but I have no idea how to even go about this!

I've tried looking for places online but they all seem to be fertility clinics when you can't fall pregnant rather than when you have recurrent pregnancy loss.

Are there certain ones which are more reputable? I'm in Yorkshire so ideally would rather not go too far but don't want to waste my money on a rubbish one. Don't suppose anyone has any clues?
