Partial molar pregnancy

Hello ladies - I posted this in the infertility thread last night but thinking now that this is probably more appropriate so apologies for double posting.

I had a missed miscarriage recently that was a suspected partial mole and this has now been confirmed by histology. I'm being referred to Charring Cross for monitoring and was wondering if others on here have had a similar experience? How long did it take for your HCG levels to drop and to get the all clear to try to get pregnant again? I'm a bit horrified at the prospect of having to maybe wait for up to a year.

This is also my third missed miscarriage although I have had a child before this one. From what I've read molar and partial molar pregnancies are completely random. Is this just bad luck? Or something I should be thinking about in the context of the other miscarriages?

Any insights gratefully received!

Thanks @00solsen00, I really hope they are!

@MariaC03, I also bring my urine sample to the hospital where they take my blood and then send everything back to Charing Cross. The lady who took my blood looked a bit confused the first time I presented her with my kit but when I brought everything up to the lab they knew what to do with it. Did they give you any paperwork that you could bring with you to a walk-in blood clinic at your local hospital?

@MariaC03 I do all of mine with the early pregnancy unit at my local hospital, are you under your EPU?

MariaC03 · 13/05/2021 22:40

No I’ve been discharged from epu for this pregnancy. I have an appointment with a gynaecologist for recurring miscarriage but they seem to be treating that as a separate issue once all this is resolved, so basically I don’t have a go to person and I’ve not seen any professional since I left the hospital. It’s convenient in a way, not having to attend appointments, but then there’s moments like this which have me questioning my understanding ha! Like last week when I put a urine sample in a post box 🙈

@MilkyWay123 some paperwork for the hospital walk in would have given me a bit more confidence but no I just got a letter asking me to arrange bloods. I called my gp surgery after commenting on this thread and they had never heard of it being done this way, but she said she would book me in and to take in the pack and the nurse will either go along with what Sheffield have said or she will arrange for the bloods to be sent internally. So at least either way Sheffield will get what they need!

Clear north/south divide here 🤣

Thanks for your responses anyway ladies! X

Hi ladies,

Can I join you?

Thank you to @MilkyWay123 for signposting this thread for me.

@TenRays our situations sound very similar. I have a 3 year old, which was a super easy, perfect pregnancy. I've since had 4 miscarriages, the first of which was a mmc requiring surgery, the second two happened naturally and the 4th required surgery again. We had finally decided to seek help, and I was pleased to be going to see Dr Shehata tomorrow for an initial appt / tests.

On Thursday I got a letter from Charing Cross telling me I'd been referred for my molar pregnancy. That is the first I've heard of it so I'm feeling really upset. There has been absolutely no mention of molar pregnancy before, and I've heard nothing from the hospital since my op.

My MVA to remove the 4th miscarriage was almost 6 weeks ago. The local hospital are going to call me back tomorrow to confirm why I have been referred, they couldn't tell me last week. I'm hoping I'll still be able to have the recurrent miscarriage tests tomorrow as all my hopes have been on those!

MariaC03 · 24/05/2021 07:18

Hi @treesall were you able to have those tests? My local hospital wouldn’t do them until I’m discharged from Sheffield, so my appointment was meant to be in April but got put back until July.

Hope everyone is doing well, I just wondered if anyone had had periods/how long it took to come. It’s 9 weeks tomorrow for me and no sign of a period. With my other 2 miscarriages they seemed to come a month later like normal. X

MilkyWay123 · 26/05/2021 12:46

Hi @MariaC03. My period came back about 5 weeks after my ERPC. It was very short though and only lasted for a day and a half. My cycle has seemed to return more or less to normal now though (a couple of days shorter than before the MC) and I had a second normal length period last week. I have seen people mention on forums and on the PMP facebook page that it has taken a while for their period to return. It might be worth mentioning to your GP though if your levels are normal and you're worried.

@MariaC03 my period came back 11 weeks after my surgery - I was really starting to worry!

I've just found today that Charing cross have discharged me as my 4 week follow up urine test was normal 🎉🎉

MariaC03 · 26/05/2021 20:37

@MilkyWay123 I’m actually jealous of your 2 periods, this is how life has got me now 🤣
I’m seeing a gynae the first week of July so if it doesn’t happen before then I can mention it to them.

@00solsen00 That’s great news, it must be such a relief for it to be over and to be able to move forward now! X

treesall · 27/05/2021 16:46

@MariaC03 yes I was able to have the tests, but they were private so probably a bit more flexible.

My private consultant said i will need follow up with Charing Cross after every future pregnancy - is that really true?!

My first set of results back from Charing Cross are already negative so I only need one further follow up in 4 weeks. Yay!

MilkyWay123 · 29/05/2021 13:00

@00solsen00 I'm so delighted that you have the all clear! Such good news just in time for the bank holiday weekend. My last set of results from this week were normal as well so if all is well in 4 weeks I'll be discharged too. Fingers crossed!

I imagine that it's so frustrating waiting to get your period @MariaC03 but I bet it arrives shortly and it's good to have the gyne appointment as a backstop.

I haven't heard that @treesall about follow ups after future pregnancies - how lovely to think we will be reminded of this time in our lives at various points in the future!

OP posts:
00solsen00 · 29/05/2021 23:01

@MilkyWay123 I have all my fingers crossed for you!!

@treesall I had a look at the Charing cross website regarding following pregnancies and since 2017 they don't follow them up as the risk of developing complications are very rare. My discharge letter from them says that they recommend a scan between 8 and 10 weeks with the next pregnancy but the risk of another molar pregnancy is 1%

treesall · 03/06/2021 14:59

Thank you @00solsen00, I hadn't noticed that.

If I get pregnant again the recurrent miscarriage specialist will scan me every 2 weeks anyway so I guess that is that recommendation covered off.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for negative results in 2 weeks...

MariaC03 · 11/06/2021 13:52

Hi All,

I’ve been discharged from Sheffield this week! 11 weeks since the d&c, it sounds like such a long time when you’re trying for a baby, but it honestly feels like it has flown and the brake from ttc has turned out to be a really positive thing for me, the opposite to how I looked at it when I got the news back in March, as you can all relate.

My little journey isn’t over yet as I still haven’t had a period and also now that my levels are back to normal I need to go through the recurrent miscarriage testing in July. But for now it’s great news!

I guess I’m just writing this to let you guys know but also for anyone in the future to stumble across, I know how much I searched the internet for stories to relate to to give me some comfort!

X

Just thought I'd post an update incase it's helpful to anyone!

This was my timeline:
23/2/21 - missed miscarriage at 12 week scan
25/2/21 - d&c
14/3/21 - another scan as still bleeding post surgery but everything looked fine - was told Hcg 87 so told unlikely to be molar
19/3/21 - call from hosp to confirm partial molar
28/3/21 - 1st results from charing cross - blood hcg 11 and urine 26
12/4/21 - blood hcg 5 and urine 9
26/4/21 - blood and urine both normal - just needed a urine test in a month
24/5/21 - urine hcg normal and discharged - advised that I can start trying again whenever I felt ready

They advised blood needed to be under 5 and urine under 25 to be normal.

10/8/21 - 12 week scan showing everything is ok so far! My early pregnancy unit advised that they would have only given me one early scan for reassurance but ended up giving me two

I'm still very nervous and have all my fingers crossed that this pregnancy will work out 🤞🤞🤞

Hello,
Am waiting on our results from our missed miscarriage with the possibility of it being a partial molar pregnancy.
Your timeline post @00solsen00 was really helpful and positive to read. Really reassuring that it might not be that long till we can try again even if the results confirm a partial molar. Thank you

AnxiousPoster · 30/03/2024 18:26

Hi there I’m wondering if any of you ladies can give an update on how things went? I’m going through a PMP at the moment. And under care with Charing Cross. My blood HCG is currently 7 so hopefully will be signed off shortly. This was my first pregnancy and terrified of it happening again.

thanks for any advice and support!

Hi, so sorry to hear you're going through this. After I had my partial molar, as soon as I got the all clear I tried again and my little boy is now 2! I had 2 early scans with the early pregnancy unit at my local hospital for reassurance and then was just under the normal scans after that. They told me that molars were very unusual and not likely to happen again.
I hope your rainbow baby comes soon xx

Thank you so much for replying @00solsen00 im sorry I only saw this today. I’m delighted you got your rainbow. Was your molar pregnancy your first pregnancy? It’s my first one and I’m worried I’ll never be able to have a healthy pregnancy. Thanks again for replying ❤️‍🩹

It was my second, but as far as I am aware it shouldn't stop you having normal pregnancies in the future. Even people who end up needing chemo have gone on to have normal pregnancies so there is definitely hope! I know how you're feeling though, it was a really horrible thing to go through
