Surgical recovery

Bit of a long one...

I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks, by that weekend I was in hospital with a suspected ectopic. That was ruled out the next day when they found a cyst on my ovary which had been causing some pain.

We returned to the EPU every week for scans. By week 8 we were told that it looked like it was a missed miscarriage (an embryonic). By this point I had started bleeding and cramping, but we were packed off for another 10 days to allow for growth.

We returned, I was scanned again and there was no progress, but I still wasn’t over the threshold, so we had to go away for another week.

One week later, it was finally confirmed and I opted for an ERPC the following Monday - it would have been nearly 12 weeks.

The procedure went well and I was discharged the same day. However, nearly 5 weeks on and I just don’t feel physically better.

I have pain in my lower abdomen and a real uncomfortable heavy feeling. I’m also really bloated and normally have a pretty flat stomach. I’ve had a repeat scan to confirm no retainer products, clear urine and blood tests (hcg of 6), a negative test and I’ve just had my first period.

Has anyone else felt like this? In total I had 6 internal scans and basically 8 weeks of pure anxiety and tension - could it just be taking a while for it all to settle?

I’ve spoken to a doctor 4 times, but haven’t been physically examined (thanks Corona!). I think they think I’m mad!

We're just giving this thread a bump to get it back into Active Conversations. Hopefully some Mumsnetters will be along soon with some advice and support.

OP, we're sorry you're going through such a difficult time. Flowers

Bumping this again - the OP's new to the site and we'd like to be able to give her some support. Brew

I would suspect it's just hormones being out of sync and your first period (which can be really weird after miscarriage). If you've had a scan and it all looked fine inside then I would feel reassured by that. Sorry for your loss. X

Sorry for your loss. I think bodies can definitely take a while to feel normal again after any surgery.
I'm waiting in my second EPU scan (will be a week today) - have a missed anembryonic pregnancy and currently 9+6. I'm probably opting for medical management as I dont think my local hospital is doing GAs for surgery and I refuse to have it under local.

@onlyreadingneverposting8 it’s so difficult as every time I speak to somebody they say ‘ohhh no you shouldn’t still be feeling like that’ but I do! I’ve had 2 sets of antibiotics too and get my hopes up every time that it’s going to fix it.

@gypsywater really sorry that you’re going through that too - you have to go with what you feel most comfortable with. I hope the scan comes round quickly. From my experience that waiting part between scans was the worst bit, but it did give us some time to get our heads around the loss, so when the actual time came emotionally I was much stronger.

@CJE1818
I hope you feel better soon, sounds like it's been a tough road.
Was yours under LA or GA?
Yeah the shock is wearing off a bit now, want to get on with the management side of things and not have that hanging over me now.

CJE1818 · 25/09/2020 15:49

@gypsywater Mine was under general. We were quite fortunate that cases have been low where we live so I had a choice. It’s definitely worth asking if general is an option (if you would prefer that) I explained how it had been so emotionally traumatic and the consultant allowed me to have it.

I think my lengthy recovery is uncommon and you’ll definitely feel better emotionally once it’s all sorted (even if you need some extra TLC for a while)

@CJE1818
Unfortunately we are in a local lockdown area and the hospital has had an outbreak this week of 34 cases so GA would be out. I just looked up costs to have it privately under GA and it's around 2k! Shock Would rather that though than any LA bollocks. Did you take much time off work after all this happened?

CJE1818 · 25/09/2020 16:16

Oh that’s rubbish!

I had 2 weeks off completely - 1 before op and 1 after. I’ve been working from home though and just in the office the odd day. The doctor offered to sign me off, but I actually feel better the days I’m there - the distraction is nice and it’s easier to forget that any of it has happened.

I think I will do similar - a week off for either the medical management or following any surgery. I work in a hospital myself - could potentially see patients virtually from home but that wont be possible if in a lot of pain or on strong painkillers.

Really hope you feel better and more back to your usual self soon Flowers

CJE1818 · 25/09/2020 16:49

@gypsywater thank you - you too - hope it’s all sorted soon!! X

I had MVA under local and it’s honestly not that bad, not pleasant by any stretch but so quick and I just caned the gas and air! Xx
