Anyone had more than one MC?

Hi There :-)

I'm currently pregnant for the 3rd time since last August. Into the 'danger zone' of 5.2 weeks... as I've never made it past 6- 6.5 sadly. Just wondered if anyone has had MC (miscarriage) investigations and has a similar story to what I describe below please?

I've noticed a pattern with my pregnancies, where I get symptoms at implantation (i.e. boobs hard, extra saliva, tired ) .... they go milder at 4 weeks (boobs less hard, maybe a bit tired) and at 5 weeks they all go. (Boobs now totally soft again) I just feel totally symptomless now and full of energy. :-(

I know there's probably nothing I can do for this pregnancy now, but if you have anything to share I'd really appreciate it. Just can't quite believe that it would be bad luck 3 times in a row - with the exact symptom pattern each time?

(This time I put myself on the baby aspirin and 800mg progesterone pessaries too - as I thought one of those may have been the cause. Waiting for official investigations in April)

xx

I'm sorry for your losses @SW83 congratulations on this pregnancy, hoping this is your rainbow.

I've had 2 missed miscarriages, both stopped growing at 5.5 weeks but I didn't miscarry until 9 weeks. I've had some investigations but nothing has been identified. I've got a follow up in Feb to discuss.

I'm under a fertility clinic and he said I can take aspirin next time but that the rmc don't like that and won't recommend it. I'm getting different answers from different people.

I did have a polyp removed in December and I've been prescribed levothyroxine as my thyroid is slightly over the recommended 2.5. Keeping my fingers crossed that we'll be third time lucky 🤞

Best wishes xx

Yes. I have had 2 successful pregnancies, then a 5 week miscarriage, then a tfmr at 18w, now a missed miscarriage at 8 weeks, identified on Weds at 11w.

At the EPU this week they said if I keep the embryo/any tissue I pass they can test for chromosomal issues, plus I can have further blood tests if I want. Not yet decided on any of this as we won't be trying again, but might be worth you asking about the above?

mathanxiety · 31/01/2020 17:52

I had three in a row between DD1 and DS, all at around the 6 week point.

The reason I had DS was progesterone suppositories, prescribed by my doctor.

If you end up miscarrying this time, start asking for progesterone.

Best wishes xx

mathanxiety · 31/01/2020 17:54

They did a D&C after the third in order to test for chromasomal abnormalities, genetic defects, etc and found none. Hence the progesterone.

Sorry for your losses. I lost my 1st at 11 weeks due to patau syndrome. I MC the next at 7 weeks. Sorry if TMI, but during the 2nd pregnancy, I carried around a sterile, lidded jar. (you can buy from a pharmacy and used for urine samples etc). My pregnancy symptoms stopped overnight. 2 days later I had spotting. I had no pain at all, no cramps and felt ok otherwise so went to work. Unfortunately, I MC whilst at work that day. I was able to collect the products into the jar.

I had an appointment at the EPU the following day, and was advised to keep the products in the fridge. Despite my 1st pregnancy having a genetic issue, they wouldn't check the contents for the cause of MC. They did, however, send the products to the lab and a few weeks later I got a report. It confirmed that the products weren't a molar pregnancy, that there actually had been a small foetus there (it wasn't a blighted ovum) and gave me some knowledge and reassurance.

Most clinics won't do any investigations till you've had 3 mc's. Have you had any tests done? Are you Rh positive or negative? If negative, have you been given an Anti-D injection after each pregnancy?

Best of luck and keep us updated x

weegiemum · 31/01/2020 18:24

I had 2 spontaneous miscarriages (8-10 weeks), then dd1, then a 10 week mc, then ds and then dd2.

Never found a reason. I was really glad to have 3 babies though - made me feel (this is weird) that I'd "broken even".

VenusStarr · 31/01/2020 22:13

I'm rhesus A- @Elouera and was told by my recurrent miscarriage consultant that the anti-d injection is not needed unless you bleed after 12 weeks, but as I miscarried at 9 weeks both times it wasn't necessary. Does make me wonder though.

futuredreams · 31/01/2020 22:24

Sorry your in the same boat as me. I've had three. One unknown location one 6-7 weeks. Other baby died 10+ weeks. Found out at 12.

I've been out on higher folic acid, vitamin D and progesterone pessaries for when I get pregnant again for 16 weeks.

Xx

Elouera · 01/02/2020 04:15

@VenusStarr- I used to work at a clinic, and ALL rhesus negative women were given Anti-D, regardless of how far along their pregnancy was when having the MC. I'm unsure if it depends on the area you are in, or the consultant, but not all areas wait till you are 12 weeks.

VenusStarr · 01/02/2020 05:14

I'm seeing my consultant again at the end of February so will ask again
@Elouera it makes sense to me that I'd have needed it. I'm finding there's such mixed information and advice.

My fertility consultant said yes to aspirin next time but said the rmc don't recommend it and so has my GP (my initial bloods are fine). It's hard to know what's the right thing to do.

SW83 · 01/02/2020 10:19

Hi Everyone,
I really appreciate all of your messages and stories. I'm so sorry for your losses too - it's just awful isn't it?

@mathanxiety yea I'm on 800mg progrestrone at the mo, plus the baby aspirin and extra folic acid. I haven't had tests yet - got them in April in London but did some research and decided it was worth a try as that's 3 'outcomes' off the list while I wait.

What I'm curious about is - did you all have symptoms? That's the trend with mine as I literally have a declining pattern in symptoms. I've absolutely convinced myself now that I've MC... but read progestrone delays that. The 6 week scan this Friday will confirm I guess. I just don't feel pregnant anymore - as per the other times it happened.

I wonder if you can get prescribed Hcg, if that's what it is...

xxx

Sorry for your losses, I had 2 missed mc at 9 & 10 weeks then 2 spontaneous mc at 6 weeks I was under s consultant had all the tests and nothing showed up. I was put on progesterone pessaries the next time I fell pregnant and we got our first dd. 3 years later I fell pregnant again started to bleed at 6 weeks got an emergency appointment with the consultant who again prescribed progesterone and we got our 2nd dd.

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/02/2020 00:25

Wishing you every luck with your pregnancy. I had 5, got DD from my 6th pregnancy last year. I never know if it’s helpful to hear of others who’ve had more, when I was in the eye of the storm the thought that whole good news may come of could be a while off was so difficult. No reason found for mine despite all the tests, but an increasing cocktail of drugs eventually got me to stay to pregnant. I was on aspirin, fragmin injections, huge progesterone dose, and steroids. I was incredibly lucky with my NHS recurrent miscarriage clinic and a consultant who was as desperate for a positive outcome and my husband and I were and he prescribed with every single thing he could. We’ll never know what worked but I’d been on lower doses of aspirin, progesterone and fragmin in pregnancies which ended in mc.

There is so so much we still don’t know about causes of mc but I know a few women who’ve had two and then hag successful pregnancies without needing treatment.

Crossing my fingers and toes for you Flowers

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/02/2020 00:25

Awful typos, hope that makes sense!

SW83 · 02/02/2020 08:21

@AnneLovesGilbert thank you so much for sharing your experiences. It sounds like you've been through such a time, but I'm so pleased it worked out in the end :-) Agreed with the cocktail approach... I haven't hard of fragmin Injections before - will look into them. I'm even on Chinese medicine! Might as well try xx

Hi, I had 5 MC, after three me and partner were referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic - all the investigations came back clear. After a further 2 , and i was pregnant again I was referred back. They suspected MK killer cells , this time they put me on everything a low dose steroid for 12 weeks, progesterone, injections for 6 months etc. And it was successful . All my previous miscarriages were around the 6 week mark

LOliver123 · 02/02/2020 08:34

Sorry that should real NK cells , if you google NK cells and miscarriage, it will provide some more background .

AnyFucker · 02/02/2020 08:39

I am sorry. It sucks.

I had two consecutive miscarriages then two successful births.

I had a lot of tests after the second as I was already undergoing fertility treatment and no reason eas found

I was told the chances of early mc is 1 in 5 so not masdively oit of the realms of just being sheer bad luck. Thst eas difficult to take at the time but they were right of course.

Best wishes !

AnyFucker · 02/02/2020 08:40

Sorry for typoes

MountainPeakGeek · 02/02/2020 08:48

FWIW, I had 2 m/c and 2 successful pregnancies and had no morning sickness and minimal symptoms in all four, so please don't assume the worst just yet. Wishing you the best of luck for a sticky one this time!

tealandseagreen · 02/02/2020 09:02

I would recommend looking into progesterone pessaries. I live abroad so got them on my insurance but maybe you need to buy them in the UK. There's a lot of support online for them. I got was prescribed after my miscarriage and they he leaped and gave me confidence.

SW83 · 04/02/2020 08:42

Thanks again for all of your messages. @tealandseagreen I'm on 800mg of progestrone daily (got a private prescription as NHS wouldn't prescribe) , plus low dose aspirin, extra folic and Chinese medicine (!). Little to no symptoms still but so far so good. 6 weeks on Thursday xx

I find it strange that low dose aspirin is advised in the UK as a preventative for MC. It is more usually associated with prevention of pre-eclampsia in the US.

This is a very recent article -
www.acog.org/Clinical-Guidance-and-Publications/Committee-Opinions/Committee-on-Obstetric-Practice/Low-Dose-Aspirin-Use-During-Pregnancy?IsMobileSet=false
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal–Fetal Medicine make the following recommendations:

Low-dose aspirin (81 mg/day) prophylaxis is recommended in women at high risk of preeclampsia and should be initiated between 12 weeks and 28 weeks of gestation (optimally before 16 weeks) and continued daily until delivery.
Low-dose aspirin prophylaxis should be considered for women with more than one of several moderate risk factors for preeclampsia.
Low-dose aspirin prophylaxis is not recommended solely for the indication of prior unexplained stillbirth, in the absence of risk factors for preeclampsia.
Low-dose aspirin prophylaxis is not recommended for prevention of fetal growth restriction, in the absence of risk factors for preeclampsia.
Low-dose aspirin prophylaxis is not recommended for the prevention of spontaneous preterm birth, in the absence of risk factors for preeclampsia.
Low-dose aspirin prophylaxis is not recommended for the prevention of early pregnancy loss.

I was prescribed progesterone back in 1992, in the US, and told absolutely no aspirin at all. I had really terrible morning sickness with the progesterone, but the end result was DS so well worth it.

SW83 · 05/02/2020 12:17

Hi @mathanxiety ! I did a lot of research into the outcomes of tests that the NHS do after 3+ miscarriages. One of the outcomes could be that you have antiphospholipid syndrome - and the treatment for this to prevent early miscarriage (if found to have this) is low dose aspirin.

My tests are not until April, yet I'm pregnant now. I didn't want to have to miscarry again... only to be told I was found positive for this syndrome - and it could have been prevented by taking the aspirin. I checked with my GP and there's no risk to me to take it now. Might as well!

The progestrone - there's a clinical trial - PROMISE, which showed a significant difference in women who had reoccurring miscarriages when prescribed vs placebo for a positive outcome. The progestrone protects the lining and provides nutrients to the fetus before the placenta is formed. I may or may not be low in this - only found out in my April tests. Again, I don't know whether i'd need either... but given none pose a risk, I might as well try.

I can see your reasoning there wrt the aspirin, SW83.

I was prescribed progesterone was back in 1992 in the US - my obstetrician said this was his usual approach, no issue about an untried treatment. I had to go to a compounding pharmacist to get the prescription made up.

Fingers crossed for you.
