Pressure in rectum after miscarriage

Hi ladies,
I'm new to this but just wanted to share my experience as there was nothing about this when I was worried and searching.
So I had a miscarriage at six and a half weeks. All came naturally, the first couple of days were intense with cramps and back ache as is normal.
Since the miscarriage however I also experienced unusual 'pressure' in my rectum. It felt like something heavy pressing down around it.
As it was my first miscarriage I called the birth clinic for reassurance but they had "never heard of that before!!" Concerned they sent me for an early pregnancy scan.. which all turned out to be normal, nothing needing any assistance or help. They also said "never heard of this before!! Go see your GP." So I went to my GP where I had a rectal exam, whereby again everything was normal and he had "never heard of that before!"

Obviously, none of those medical experts put my mind at rest or could tell me what was wrong.
After googling and talking to friends/family I can only assume it was brought on by all the cramping in the pelvic floor area. It is all pretty close to each other in there after all. A week on I still have that 'pressure' feeling although it finally seems to be getting less intense.

I'm intrigued to know if anyone has had this random symptom after a miscarriage or if I really am an odd ball with this!?

Hi all,
So glad for this thread. Seems we are not alone! I had my d&c 12 days ago. I hemorrhaged in surgery and had to have a type of balloon out inside me for 24 hours to stop the bleeding. Over the last few days I have felt a sharp pain every time I sit on the loo and push. It feels like it's in my bum cheek sometimes. If I hold my cheeks and press a bit whilst I push it seem to stop. So strange!

TTCbaby2023 · 08/05/2023 13:06

Suffered an mmc last week and opted for medical management. The cramps / contractions were so bad that I ended up in A&E. Once bleeding calmed down after a few days, the rectal pains started making sitting down and trips to the loo difficult. I suspect this is down to a very tight pelvic floor as going through a mc is quite a trauma for the body and especially the pelvic floor. At least I hope this is it.

WhatTheEll · 08/05/2023 13:18

I commented back in 2021. Just want to send love to everyone going through this. I've worked out why I had pressure in my rectum.....it was the same pressure after having my boy via forceps. It's from pushing. Your body rejecting something. A MMC is like a mini labour.
♥️

leelaamara · 09/05/2023 07:30

Much love back!
it's definitely a spasm from stretch trauma. (Speculum, forceps, etc) And I think it's exacerbated by the emotional trauma too. I believe a nerve is involved, perhaps being pinched a bit by the tight ligaments. When we can soften and soothe out the ligaments and tendons, etc, it can ease out. It's no fun at all, and I find doctors don't understand it at all. The female tendon/ligament/muscle anatomy is still being learned about and updated in the medical community.

TTCbaby2023 · 09/05/2023 12:07

@WhatTheEll bearing in mind the horrid contraction pain I had after my mmc, your explanation makes a lot of sense to be honest. The female pelvic floor is indeed poorly understood by doctors. ❤️

had a MC as well at 15 weeks, sucks happened 2 weeks ago i did the medical procedure first , and was told to go for a scan a week later where they found some RPOCS so they had to perform the D&C ouch!! then woke up today; 3 days after procedure with sharp pains in my abdomen when i was going this morning, so searched to see if this was something that happens and apparently it is from all the messages above am glad am not alone i guess am just gonna wait it out, also the messages here are pretty hilarious its a breath of fresh air !!! blessings and i hope everyone heals.

Shayshaylee · 14/09/2023 15:55

No I am having that as we speak it very uncomfortable

Danah96 · 06/11/2023 23:22

Hi everyone. I had a miscarriage about 4 days ago. I did not know I was pregnant nor was I looking to get pregnant. But it has been such a roller-coaster and I just wanted some support as I couldn't tell any of my close circle. Much appreciated 💛💛

Molls18 · 11/11/2023 03:25

I had a chemical pregnancy (early miscarriage) and I also am having rectilinear problems so no your not the only odd ball going / gone threw it

Molls18 · 11/11/2023 03:26

Rectum*

Molls18 · 11/11/2023 03:27

Sorry to here about this here if you wanna talk about it x

Aprosser · 18/11/2023 04:48

Thank you for sharing this! I too, struggled to find information about what I was experiencing, and several doctors, midwives and a Natropath had “never heard of it”

I was 6 weeks pregnant and started light bleeding. I ended up miscarrying naturally. I bled for over 4 weeks and had rectum pressure/pain. It worsened at night or when I ate.

I could feel my cervix dilating during the miscarriage and mild contractions that caused severe pain. I have a tilted cervix that leans towards my rectum. While all this is happening… I had 2 cysts that bursted during this time. It has felt like my uterus is under construction, like it’s been through a car accident and it’s healing.

I couldn’t use pain meds so I used castor oil treatments, herbal medication, ibuprofen and tinctures from the natural path to help the process. My body naturally emptied but I’m still bleeding 4 weeks later. Lighter, but I imagine it will stop soon.

You’re not alone!

Hey, so thankful for this thread and your comment makes so much sense to me for my pain I going through my misscarraige at 6 weeks. And it's been a roller coaster of emotions and pain, however I wanted to know if it's normal to have pain while I pee and harsh pain when I'm emptying my bladder? Is it somthing I should be worried about?

Turquiose37 · 02/01/2024 21:11

Curious did anyone also experience the same during labor? I had it during my miscarriage and even worse when I had my son. I’m seeing some posts that it might be called proctalgia fugax. Anyone diagnosed with proctalgia fugax?

CurlyWurly1991 · 13/01/2024 21:56

Found this thread as I’m experiencing the same … 5 days on from surgical management. I am also having a lot of gassiness and bloating… mild cramps like period pains.. it’s hard to tell whether it’s the uterus , digestive system or all of it. I have a retroverted uterus…

Tishaa · 25/01/2024 11:02

I just had a miscarriage in my 6 weeks of pregnancy. I am devastated and depressed. Its been two days and I am trying really hard to get back to normal but I am having severe pain while peeing and pooping was also super painful. I was quite worried but today after reading all the comments there is a relief

Nraafy · 20/02/2024 16:34

Feeling same after medical miscarriage.
Thanks you shared yours. It relieved me. I was worried. ❤

Zelda1991 · 07/05/2024 02:26

I just wanted to thank you for this post. Mine was confusing they don’t know if it was an ectopic, miscarriage they are currently stating it as unknown location pregnancy . But at this point my body probably released it. I have be been going for constant follow ups since the ultra sound clinic sent me to the er. It seems like my body is doing it naturally. I’m now at 167hcg . I too have pressure and sometimes sharp pain in my rectum and bladder. I’m assuming it too is the left over blood in there. I’m hoping over time it will go down as my HCG levels go down and fully stop bleeding. I was freaking out too though and still kinda am. It’s a slowwwww recovery that’s for sure. I think you def have to be monitored going through this, until the whole process is completed

I am experiencing this. I am scared there is retained placenta. Please share how you recovery and what caused that pressure on your anus. I appreciate your advice so much.

Chickenlove55 · 30/07/2024 15:21

Trigger warning - words may be triggering below.

I am now experiencing all of this, the sharp pain in anus and blood discharge is brown serum like. My nightmare is below.

July 15 - Went in for my 3 month ultrasound and baby measured at 9 weeks w no heartbeat.

Tried to let my body pass him naturally but no luck so July 20 I took the medication and bled so so so much but yet felt fine. Called paramedics. Thick yogurt like blood. Bc of how much blood came out, they thought everything was out.

The rest of just week, I had medium period like. But felt fine.

July 27 - 8 days later for the last 4 hours my Placenta was hanging there 3 inches out and is not coming out. Lots of blood. But I feel fine. I went to emerge and the doctor just pulled it out. I was scared to pull in case it was stuck.
I also was shocked since everyone told me that last week when I took the medication, everything had passed.

July 30-

@Chickenlove55 so so sorry you're going through this 😢🙏🏻❤️ all I can recommend is that you contact your pregnancy unit at hospital and get a scan ASAP. X

WhatTheEll · 30/07/2024 15:53

Just for reference, I was only 8 weeks when I had mine. And a few days after taking medication the pressure in anus and bowels was a mirror of how I felt after giving birth, so for me it was like a mini labor

leelaamara · 02/08/2024 03:32

I’m so sorry. I’ve been doing research thru medical journals, as I e recently received further damage after a hysterescopy - nerve damage that’s bed bound me. Like what I experienced after DnC but worse. What I’ve discovered is the medical community still don’t know about women’s pelvises and their nerves in there. What we are experiencing is nerve irritation and corresponding weakness and or tension from surrounding muscles, especially the one that stabilises the pelvis, a perineal muscle
acupuncuture can help nerve damage, but the medical community will only recommend drugs they say are safe, but on research are not. Anything we can do to relax the area is helpful including red light therapy. A good red light belt is amazing. Doctors will tell you they know what is going on when they don’t. They simply don’t have the knowledge and tools as I have read in the medical journals. They will NOT tell the public this, causing harm. Most malpractice suits today come from this kind of thing. Damage done in gyno surgeries. The pelvic nerve system is so vast and delicate. My advice to everyone is to research the medical journals, not web MD, and not even the so called specialists of whom I’ve also seen to no avail along with many others I know. Using a 3D program to understand my anatomy has helped me enormously in knowing how to care for this .. 3D4 it’s called.
women’s health is still so hit and miss these days. We need to be very careful when getting ‘care’

Chickenlove55 · 02/08/2024 14:00

Update on my own.
The hospital had me taking 3 iron pills each day after they pulled the placenta out because of my low hemoglobin levels and excess loss of blood.
The pressure on my anus /sharp pains lasted 4 days after. What helped me was taking a stool softener although no one told me till I called the pharmacy after that the iron would cause constipation. It was either time or the stool softener that helped after the 4days of pain but slowly feeling back to normal. (warning for anyone that has to take that much iron and then a stool softener, your momement will be as black as the night sky. Don't be worried. It's your body doing what it needs to do from the change in your diet from the iron)

Meggybzs · 28/01/2025 01:42

Omg, I had to jump onto this forum and create an account just to let anyone who reads this know that rectal pain was my MAIN miscarriage symptom! I did not have ectopic. It felt like someone was squeezing my colon and now even a week later I’m still sore when I poo or sit down.
