Pressure in rectum after miscarriage

Hi ladies,
I'm new to this but just wanted to share my experience as there was nothing about this when I was worried and searching.
So I had a miscarriage at six and a half weeks. All came naturally, the first couple of days were intense with cramps and back ache as is normal.
Since the miscarriage however I also experienced unusual 'pressure' in my rectum. It felt like something heavy pressing down around it.
As it was my first miscarriage I called the birth clinic for reassurance but they had "never heard of that before!!" Concerned they sent me for an early pregnancy scan.. which all turned out to be normal, nothing needing any assistance or help. They also said "never heard of this before!! Go see your GP." So I went to my GP where I had a rectal exam, whereby again everything was normal and he had "never heard of that before!"

Obviously, none of those medical experts put my mind at rest or could tell me what was wrong.
After googling and talking to friends/family I can only assume it was brought on by all the cramping in the pelvic floor area. It is all pretty close to each other in there after all. A week on I still have that 'pressure' feeling although it finally seems to be getting less intense.

I'm intrigued to know if anyone has had this random symptom after a miscarriage or if I really am an odd ball with this!?

Ok so hopefully this will ease in a few days. I’ve been getting it in both my rectum and vagina. As if we aren’t going through a bad time as it is and then with this on top

GingerCalico · 17/06/2020 21:32

Lolol I feel your pain, literally! Gin

Its not nice but yes I did find that verrrrrrrry slowly after about 5 or 6 days the pressure eased up, obviously if you're in pain call your GP or see if you can get through to an Early Pregnancy Unit at your local hospital for advice

Hi everyone I'm so glad I've found this. Unfortunately I am currently going through a MC at 6 weeks with our first baby. I'm absolutely devastated but have also had this weird pain the last couple of days. I'm so glad I'm not alone Sad

I had a miscarriage 2 weeks ago today, and had been on strong painkillers, and now they've worn off I have intense rectal pain :( in fact the whole area underneath feels spasmy and achy. I do have a reteoverted uterus, and I do have some endometriosis round there, so maybe they are causes/contributing factors. Hurts to sit down or lie down! And it seems to be affecting my ability to wee normally. Just came off antibiotics (given in case of infextion) so shouldn't be an infection at this stage. Will call Dr in a couple of days if no improvement, reassuring to read this thread, thanks! Although still a bit freaked out!

Hi all, I'm in week 2 after my first ever MC (I had a missed miscarriage whereby I only found out at 11 weeks that our baby hadn't made it last 6 weeks) and I specifically went online to find out why I keep having rectum pain when I sit. It also feels uncomfortable when I need the toilet - or need to pass wind! This has only gotten a bit stronger in the last couple of days. Glad to see this thread x

I'm glad I found this thread!!

I'm going/gone through a medically managed miscarriage. Empty sac at 8 weeks, tracking at 6.5 weeks. Took Misoprostol last Thursday evening and everything kicked off early Fri morning. (It was awful so I'll spare the details). I was fine rest of Fri and Saturday apart from bleeding but then Sunday afternoon cramping started again and this pressure when I need a poo! It reminds me of when I was younger and I had heavy periods; pooping during that time was also an issue and now it feels just like that. It feels like when I stand up I've been stretched? So I'm more comfortable lying down or bent over. The cramping is manageable and the bleeding is like a heavy period, I just hope this is it and there is no tissue remaining 🤞🏻🤞🏻 xxx

I am so glad I found this thread. I had to have an emergency D and C 3 days ago. I was twelve weeks when I started to bleed profusely that they had to give me 3 units of blood. It was my first pregnancy, and only being 23 yrs old I know I have plenty more times to try, I'm just depressed about it. It was a little tough to have a bowel movement a day after, but today, my (TMI) rectum anus area hurt to bad! Pain and pressure? The pain comes on when I sit on the toilet to pee, or have a bowel movement, which is the worst. It kinda comes on when I sit or walk. Like I'm pulling it down there. I mentioned it to my doctor and said it's like lightning crotch, and she never heard of that! She said it could be my uterus is still contracting down. That was all she said. But my lord it hurts to go! After the D and C, I haven't had to wear a pad. I'm not bleeding, thank God.

Hi @KME2018, I miscarried last week and have pain when I need to pee or have a bowel movement. I spoke to a midwife who said I'm probably just still very tender internally so when bladder/rectum is full it's putting pressure on the tender areas around it. She did say to make sure I don't have any UTI/kidney injection symptoms and to keep an eye on things but what she said gave me some reassurance and it does seem to be easing so hopefully it eases for you soon.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Thank you for your response. I'm also very sorry for your loss. I had to go into the E.R today for almost passing out and nausea that accompanied my extreme pain. Turns out I have endometritis. I'm on two harsh antibiotics for the next 10 days. The pain I have is almost unbearable. But, it should get better.

Moiraroseswigs · 13/05/2021 19:13

Oh I'm sorry to hear that, hope you feel better soon

I’m very grateful for this topic. I couldn’t find anything online about this pressure/pain in my rectum I was experiencing, and like you, it worried me. Especially because, like in your case, the medical professionals weren’t familiar with this symptom. So I decided to share my experiences here too.

During my second scan (12 weeks) it was found the fetus had stopped growing at 7.5 weeks (shortly after my first scan). I had to go to the hospital to figure out the next step, as I was informed it could take a while to miscarry “naturally”. I had 3 options at the hospital: 1. Wait for the “natural” miscarriage (could take a long time) 2. Have it removed with a procedure or 3. Take medication to stimulate the miscarriage. I went for option 3. I took the medication the day after (on a Thursday).

Aside blood loss and cramps, I also got a fever but it settled down within 7 hours after the medication was taken. The blood loss remained, but not as bad. I thought all was well.

Until Sunday. 3 days after the miscarriage. Suddenly I started feeling a “pang” in my butt whenever I sat down too enthusiasticly. And it got worse the following days. I really had to carefully sit down in order not to get this “pang” of pain up my butt. This is going to sound weird and I’m not talking from experience, but it felt like there was a huge dildo up my bum and whenever I’d sit down it would shoot further up inside. It wouldn’t hurt so much once sat down, it was really this first few seconds of impact that felt so weird and it worried me. And when I’d be standing it wasn’t noticeable at all, or barely. Unfortunately, that also got worse as the days went by and I could feel this “pressure” even while standing (doing nothing).

I called my midwife and she thought it was hemorrhoids. I called the hospital and they said it was because my uterus/vagina were working so hard to clean up, my rectum wanted to participate, too (oversimplified). Then the blood loss and cramps increased once more (after one week). Then after a day I suddenly could feel the pressure settling down. Now I’m almost 2 weeks in, and I can throw myself on the couch once more (but I don’t because I’m still trained to sit down carefully each time haha).

Soooo, TLDR: for me too, the pressure went away on its own (after about 2 weeks).

leelaamara · 09/09/2021 01:39

Me too. 20 years ago, I had a DC and the rectal cramps had me on the floor. (Especially if I needed to fart). I've just had a cervix polypectomy and the cramps are back.. milder, but there. I'm guessing vajajays don't like spectrum in there for that long a time. I'd also suspect maybe a fissure. Not sure. It sucks that Doctors have no knowledge of this. I'm wondering if pharmacists do. Effects are usually told to them

SunAndSea37 · 11/09/2021 00:06

I'm so grateful for this thread! I had an MC a month ago and I have really bad pains like these - I can only sit for short periods and it's really crampy and pressured.

I have a retroverted uterus and suspected endo which had previously been under control with the pill, but looks like this could be a common MC symptom? I have been panicking so much about what it might be.

KPRV · 05/11/2021 12:27

I have been experiencing pressure, swelling & burning sensation in the anal area... I have been advised by my doctors that I am experiencing a miscarriage after chemical pregnancy... I found this thread and looking to get advise on the anal swelling I am experiencing.

Trying to contact the doctors but everything is so slow they have just not got back to me yet. Should I go to the A&E?

Sim34 · 26/11/2021 18:41

Hi there,

I am having same problem, can you please tell how long it took to go away ?

Kaedemi · 26/11/2021 18:56

For me it came back and went away again… I was worried it had to do with losing blood as I had been losing blood for 6 weeks after the MC. It finally settled down for good after all the blood loss. I was worried it would come back again during my period, but so far it hasn’t (2 days in). So it may take a while, and if you’re very worried, it might be worthwhile to check with your doctor to rule out anything else.

Pippiloula85 · 17/12/2021 00:00

I had a medically managed miscarriage on sunday after a MMC n suffering terrible with pressure and shooting pains up my rectum and when trying to go to the toilet to pass urine, open my bowels or pass gas it has me in tears i was heading to A&E tonight as i have had 3 previous natural miscarriages and never experienced anything like this during them and decided to google it 1st and found this thread definitely feel better that alot of other people have experienced this before i dont feel as worried now and hopefully a few more days it will ease im finding it so hard to wee etc with pain, and pressure just have to sit there for ages til it passes.

Caneloalvarez · 20/12/2021 22:49

Hi @Pippiloula85 I hope you are ok, I just googled this too as I've just had a very scary poop experience with shooting pains up my butt! And yes passing wind is very painful too, i think I'm very constipated after all the medication I've had.

I had a failed medical management followed by an ERPC surgery on Friday, my bleeding has slowed down a lot but now I'm suffering with this awful pain, I was actually debating whether to call an ambulance as I wasnt sure whether the pain was related to my uterus, and was worried I was about to pass a huge clot or something! However I managed to poop and the pain has settled now. It's very scary not knowing exactly why we are having these pains. The explanation about the uterus working hard to clean up and the bowel joining in makes sense! But if you are worried do go to a&e. Wishing you a speedy recovery from this nightmare! Xx

C07321 · 09/02/2022 17:13

I can not begin to describe how relived I feel knowing I'm not the only one. I'm sorry for your loss. I just miscarried this last weekend and I'm having the same pain but see this isn't the first time experiencing this pain. Since I got my birth control removed every period comes with this pain and stops my dead in my tracks but I guess it's only when I bleed. I'm still bleeding from my miscarriage and this pain started last night. I don't have answers either because no one I know has experienced this pain before.

Sophjwalk · 13/08/2022 19:30

I just want to thank you for this post. I had a D&V following a miscarriage today. I've been fine until I went to sit down and had horrific shooting/stabbing pains in my behind. Glad it's not just me!

leelaamara · 19/08/2022 08:28

Hi everyone!
Just adding to the stories.
I had the rectal spasms after a D&C too.
More recently I had a hysterscopy that has kept me bedridden for a year and counting.
I've come to learn what the cramps are. They are nerve pains.
I believe the spectrums put too much pressure on the nerves.. perhaps they are opening us too wide, believing the anaesthetic to be protective of pain and damage.. but they are doing damage. I've heard of many people get what we have after both operations. The doctors will tell you they don't know what it is, even the gyneocologists. The pelvic pain clinic can advise that these are nerve pain symptoms, as can chiropractors. Doctors only know to medicate nerve pain symptoms, they don't know how to heal them (though they'll fill you with all their 'latest' jargon of mind-pain connection). Truth is, they don't know how to heal nerves. Physios deal with tissues, not nerves. They'll give you a lot of yoga poses to do, that don't really help. GOOD chiropractors and acupuncturists (especially electrode acupuncture.. make sure they are GOOD) CAN help with nerve damage. Heat packs help a LOT as does (surprisingly) chamomile tea. TENS devices, ultrasound tools, etc can be useful.
Best of luck everyone. It's horrendous to suffer all this on top of our grief. So much love.

AnitaSMV · 19/08/2022 10:03

I wrote about my experience in this thread back in late 2019 following my MMC and wanted to follow up since I got a diagnosis for it. The shooting rectal pain got worse the following period and I went to see my gyno who told me to call him right away if it happened the next one (by the time I saw him after the second period, the pain had stopped). The pain was back after the third and he sent me that afternoon for an MRI where they found suspected stage 1-2 endometriosis (was to be confirmed during laparoscopic surgery scheduled for a couple weeks later but Covid canceled all “elective” surgeries). I went on to get pregnant again and miscarrying and then two rounds of unsuccessful IVF (the fertility doc wanted to do the egg retrieval prior to a laparoscopic surgery in case my ovaries were damaged during the procedure since there was evidence of a cyst on one ovary on the as well). The pain didn’t come back after my cycles returned after IVF and then I got pregnant again with my DS who is currently climbing all over me. I will eventually address the endometriosis once my period returns if the pain comes back.

Good to know guys i am not the only one. Doctors don’t ever tell you anything and google is also wiped out from all such searches. Glad to find this post. The pain comes as spasms in the rectum, vagina and back. Just waiting for all this to go away. Day 5 and counting
