Mothers age at menopause

They say you'll enter menopause at a similar age to your mother.

Was this true for you?

My mother was only 45.

OP posts:
ReignOfError · 19/03/2026 22:26

My mum was in her early 40s, her mum in her late 30s. I was 53.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/03/2026 22:32

DM was 32. She told me this often from being about 15 to having a child.

I was 52.

Summerhillsquare · 19/03/2026 22:35

I was six months behind. Her mother was also 47. Weird.

A hysterectomy causes surgical menopause. That is a bit more than a risk.

Thanks- my mum denies this was the cause though (as in menopause caused by hysterectomy) so I find it confusing. She has a tendency to fabricate her medical history so I cannot be certain the exact procedure she had (fairly sure it was this).

A hysterectomy is removal of the uterus and doesn’t alone cause menopause. You only go into surgical menopause if you also have an oopherectomy (removal of the ovaries)

Yes I’m not sure whether my mum had a full hysterectomy or not. She still had periods after as far as I’m aware. This is where my confusion is.

EDIT- fairly sure she didn’t have periods and I’m confusing myself. I’ve just added a further post below.

Amsylou · 19/03/2026 22:48

Actually, I’m not certain she did have periods. I was young so I’m probably mixing up memories. I just remember her going for the operation and being told it was a hysterectomy when I was quite young. She said she started menopause 6 years after the op.

thejadefish · 19/03/2026 22:55

DM was 48. I suspect that I entered peri at 42-ish, had DC2 (natural conception at 44) born when I was 45. Now 49 still getting periods. Oddly my peri symptoms went away after having DC2 and only really returned about 2 years after DC2 was born. Hormonal shifts from pregnancy I assume lessened symptoms but I have less eggs regardless so I wasn't expecting them to ease and certainly not for so long.

SuperBlondie28 · 19/03/2026 23:00

I have no idea. Her periods stopped before 40, but she was diagnosed with underactive thyroid that same year. So put awol periods down to that.

I moved out of home when I was 22. She was 52 ish. I don't remember her having hot flushes but I've never had any either. She definitely seemed to be in a permanent bad mood throughout her 40s. She never used HRT. Her bones are seriously fragile now.

I've made damn sure I went on HRT to protect my bones.

It didn't used to be,they used to take everything out during a hysterectomy. I've not idea when the practice changed as I know they only remove overys now if there is a problem with them. But my aunt had everything out when she had a hysterectomy for fibroids, this was some years ago now though.

MigGirl · 19/03/2026 23:08

Oh and I've no idea, all the maternal side of my family either died young or had a hysterectomy. So while I'm 49 and definitely in premenapause, I've no idea if it relates to any family history 🤔.

UnderThePressure · 19/03/2026 23:18

My mum was 41, I was a little earlier at 37.

begonefoulclutter · 19/03/2026 23:19

LiveLaughLogLady · 19/03/2026 20:42

This isn't true. You're born with millions of eggs. They die off as you age and this is what causes menopause.

Oh. My consultant gynaecologist must have been wrong then. Because that's what they told me when I was diagnosed with premature ovarian insufficiency.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 19/03/2026 23:42

My Mum was 58 and her Mum was 60.
I'm 55, so I could have a few more years to go.

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 19/03/2026 23:43

My DM had a hysterectomy at 37, my periods have finally stoped at 57.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 19/03/2026 23:44

My mum was 39, I was 36.

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 19/03/2026 23:46

To all the posters that had an early menopause did you your peri menopause symptoms start a lot earlier or did your periods end suddenly?

Choux · 19/03/2026 23:57

My mum was 36. I was 40 although periods were awol for most of the time after 38.

@ForAmusedHazelQuoter I had no symptoms like hot flushes at all. My periods just started getting further apart from the age of about 34 and were pretty non existent from 38 onwards.

I knew it was early menopause because of my mum but, as I had no symptoms, the GP thought it was stress and was very shocked when my FSH result came back at post menopause levels when I was 38. I had one period at 39 and then one at 40 before everything shut down.

I have been on HRT for 16 years now to protect my bones and heart.

ChirpyAmberLion · 20/03/2026 00:57

Blimey, I must be in a minority as I have/had no clue when my DGM or DM went through Meno. I mean I possibly did subconsciously at the time, but it would never have been spoken about or shared.

I had my first period at 10 and started (maybe) my journey with the menopause at 50, though not actively considering the menopause at the time. (Call me deluded and denying my age lol).

Given my own experience and no one else’s, I wouldn’t consider comparing ages whether it be my DM (which is a non conversation starter anyway) a friend, or anyone else.

Crwysmam · 20/03/2026 01:06

My DM was mid thirties but had a premature menopause due to a pituitary tumour. My sisters and I were mid fifties before the worst symptoms hit and I’d gone through it by 57. I didn’t really notice peri menopause. I started HRT at 53 when my moods were becoming dragon like but I still hadn’t had a hot flush.

CharlotteSometimeslikesanafternoonnap · 20/03/2026 04:54

Mum was done by 40. GP confirmed I was in peri at 34, had a total hysterectomy at 46, so surgical menopause for me.

RoyalPenguin · 20/03/2026 20:32

My mum was 54. I am nearly 52 and am still having periods, but they have become irregular (three months gap between the last two) so I am expecting to be a bit younger than her (but who knows, they may drag on for another couple of years).

namezchangez · 20/03/2026 20:53

So many people here who had a very early menopause. I thought 45 would be unusually early — but in your 30s?
I’m 47 and no major signs yet. My periods have never been regular, though, so maybe that makes it hard to tell. No hot flushes, joint pain, tiredness but I do think my skin has got worse (spots) in the last couple of years. DM was 56.

hyggetyggedotorg · 20/03/2026 21:04

My mum had a hysterectomy at 46 for a massive fibroid & heavy bleeding. Sister & I don’t have the kind of relationship where I could ask.

I’m 50 & still having regular periods although lots of peri symptoms with them.

One thing I promised myself if I ever had a daughter was to be totally honest & transparent about all health issues - including the messy ones!

GenieGenealogy · 21/03/2026 08:53

My mother is 80 and never ever discussed menopause so I have no idea. She just does not discuss that sort of thing AT ALL, when I was 9 or 10 and coming up to puberty she bought me a book from the church bookshop to teach me about periods and reproduction. Although the periods bit was accurate, all it taught me about babies was that you absolutely had to be married first and before you were married, having a baby was impossible. Penny didn't drop until I was about 13 or 14.

She is also one of those "stuff and nonsense" and "all in the mind" people who told me morning sickness was a myth. I have been much more open with my own daughter!!

SillyBillyGoose · 21/03/2026 21:48

No my dm was average age 55.

I was 41 when my periods stopped.
