Has anybody gone into instant menopause?

LucyLoo1972 · 16/02/2026 22:21

As the title really. I had a psychotic breakdown at 44 and went into menopause immediately.

My periods just stopped. They had been regular and relatively easy although sometimes heavy.

Has anybody experienced this outside of having a hysterectomy?

Me. Aged 43

PurpleLovecats · 16/02/2026 22:22

My periods were regular as clockwork until November then nothing. I’ve started HRT this week and am bleeding now but it surprised me when they just stopped!

SpiritAdder · 16/02/2026 22:23

In a way. Chemically induced menopause.
I am still having really bad symptoms of it.

maisie123 · 16/02/2026 22:28

Yes, my periods stopped the day my husband died. No hot flushes, nothing.

Yes aged 40. All done. It's just how it seems to be in my family.

was it just sudden stopping? like one month you were having periods and then it just stopped and never came back?

Yep, thanks to the Pfizer vaccine.

Additup · 16/02/2026 23:08

My periods just stopped at 52. They'd been regular every 24-30 days for years and then just stopped. I was really surprised and tbh couldn't believe it (or my luck) at first.
Looking back I'd had some peri menopause symptoms like joint pain. No rage or hot flushes though.

4 years on and I've still never had a hot flush 😂

Additup · 16/02/2026 23:09

I should add, there was no stress, illness etc before they just stopped.

MyThreeWords · 16/02/2026 23:13

My periods stopped very suddenly when I was 50, at a time of sudden trauma (a son's serious illness). The only prior symptom of menopause was that my periods had been quite heavy for a while.

It is very interesting to read on this thread of other women for whom menopause seems to have been triggered by seriously stressful events.

It makes sense, I guess, that if your body is more or less ready to stop anyway, it might conserve resources at a time of stress by initiating menopause

Yes. Exactly that.

My mum's friend after electrocution cutting the grass. She was hospitalised, had skin graft on her arm. Later realised her period had stopped at 44.

Reginaphalangeeeee · 16/02/2026 23:22

I still have my period but following my fathers death, cycle went whack, Peri-symptoms began. It's been 12 months now & realise I put alot down to grief but plan to ask to start some HET to see if it helps. I hope it does. But nervous

I’m almost 52

Sort of. I had a very easy perimenopause courtesy of the Mirena coil but added in oestrogen patches when the dragon moods started. I was enjoying life and then was diagnosed with hormone positive breast cancer so had to go cold turkey with HRT. In addition I started taking hormone blockers.

I was warned it could be horrendous but apart from a few hot flushes in the first couple of weeks I was fine. Living without hormon s is fine. I have no libido but because I have no libido I don’t miss it. DH had a stroke a couple of months after I finished treatment that left him with ED and although h still has a libido he has major equipment failure so for the time being we have agreed to put things on hold.

It’s possible that I may come off the hormone blockers this year if I make 5 yrs NED🤞and having spoken the others who’ve been through it a lot of the side effects subside so hopefully normal services will return.

It is actually reassuring that my libido has disappeared because it means the drugs are doing the job. But I am hoping that the other side effects go as well.

Yes. 20 years ago went from regular periods to complete stop, i was early 40s. Turned out to be the first symptom of a brain tumour but GP refused to recognise that I might need any help. I was sent away with him saying “it’s natural, there’s nothing we can do to help you.”

What type of hormone blockers are you on? I've been on Zoladex and Letrozole for 2.5 years and while the rages and joint pain have subsided, the hot flushes still persist (a further 2.5 years of the injections and 7.5 years of the tablets to go). I've got an onc appointment in a few weeks and planning to ask him if a different type might help 😕

Yes I went l through an extremely stressful time and my periods just stopped after having been regularly previously, when I was 41. I did wonder if they might come back at some point, but no, that was it, never had one again!

Yes. Two very distressing and difficult things a few months apart.
