Did oestrogen help with your joint pain?

I am about to start on oestrogen (spray). I have mild knee and hip pain. Did taking oestrogen help you with joint pain?

I mean, I guess I'll find out 😆Just interested to know how others found it.

Yes, it really helped! I felt like an 80 year old before I started. I still get a bit achey but nothing like the pain in was in previously. It only took a week or two to see an improvement.

Oh wow, this is so exciting! My knees have been feeling painful, I do goblet squats in the gym that I recently joined and they're really difficult. Also my knees hurt on the treadmill.

Really hoping I get the same effect!

Good to know! Sorry about your big toes though 😆

Yes - aching joints was my main annoying symptom. It’s been so much better. Hip bursitis is still there, but ankles, knees, wrists, elbows all fine. I have gel and tablets.

PieonaBarm · 12/02/2026 16:35

In my hands yes, my hips no!

DameM · 12/02/2026 17:23

A thousand percent!

Like a pp I felt like an oap, getting from the settee going up the stairs was so painful in my hips and knees, sitting in the car for long periods of time everywhere hurt, shopping trips I'd be taking paracetamol for backache.

Within weeks all gone. I dread the day I have to come off hrt and return to the nightmare of painful joints.

Beamur · 12/02/2026 17:24

Yes. Massive difference.

Ooh! Sounds fantastic.

Why would you come of HRT?

Just if any medical problems such as breast cancer, endo thickening, high blood pressure maybe.

Oh right. Well I will have a Mirena coil for the thickinging, my blood pressure has been boring for years, no history of breast cancer. But good to know.

yes, definitely. Had to increase my dose when I realised I was creaking like an 80yr old again.

ChimneyPot · 12/02/2026 17:35

Made a huge difference to joint pain.
Definitely helps with squats.

Until I started looking into it I literally had no idea that menopause could cause joint pain.

Fantastic! Hopefully I will be able to spend longer on the treadmill. And do those blasted goblet squats 😆

Joint pain is really minimised ime. I could cope with overheating, sleep disturbances etc but the pain and stiffness was terrible. I was starting to think I'd developed some auto immune fibro type thing. I was even struggling to paint toe nails Grin. Now I'm back to walking briskly and even running upstairs.

This is amazing to know! If I could return to where I was, say, 15 years ago, that would be amazing (I am 59). I just never realised about the joint pain issue.

Very much so

HellonHeels · 12/02/2026 18:24

From the opposite perspective, I am taking an oestrogen blocker for cancer treatment and I've never felt so bad! Joint pain, muscle stiffness, vaginal drying (more like actual dessication).

Get on that oestrogen and enjoy the relief!

Oh I am so sorry to hear that 💐 Can you not even do localised oestrogen for down below?

Thanks @DownhillTeaTray (love your name!) Im going to have a chat with the BC nurse team and see what they think about the vag cream. I think the localised nature of it makes it less of a risk so fx!

I hope you get great results from your oestrogen.
The only good thing about reduced oestrogen levels is I no longer take any shit at work, had good career progression in my later years 🤣

So sorry to hear this Flowers. You'd really think they'd have something to mimic oestrogen when hormones can't be taken due to cancer.
Hope you are recovering well.

Ask about a suppository too. Very localised. Has been transformative for me.

Much like you OP..I had absolutely no idea that the menopause caused issues like the joint pain. Mine was so bad in my wrists and hands I could hardly hold my tiny Yorkies lead for a walk! The hip and elbow pain was excruciating. It all disappeared within 2 weeks of starting HRT.

DownhillTeaTray · 13/02/2026 10:11

I am so excited! Maybe I'll be able to save money on ibuprofen 😆

Can't start oestrogen until next week, will keep you posted!
