Waking up sometime after 4am, racing thoughts

PersephoneParlormaid · 05/10/2025 18:07

Title should say ‘sometime after 4am’ !
What more can I do? I’m on HRT, taking mag glycinate, don’t drink alcohol, stopped dairy after my evening meal, have a regular sleep routine.
Im having those conversations with people/songs running through my head/worrying about things that don’t matter. Feel like I’m going mad, I just want to sleep until 6am at least.

Snap ref the waking up xx

TheBoomingVoiceofExperience · 06/10/2025 04:59

Me too OP! I’m going to shift my day a bit and claim to be in the 5am club.

sleeping until 6/7am seems and unachievable miracle…

RedRosesforthewin · 06/10/2025 05:00

This was how I knew I needed HRT in the first place and it stopped for the first year after starting HRT but now I think I need to tweak the HRT dosage as it has started happening again and it is completely debilitating

rereturner · 06/10/2025 05:03

Hi, I’ve had a slight lie in until 4.45 today but this is also me.

PiggieWig · 06/10/2025 05:04

Same here. I wish I had the answer. I think it’s having a busy mind but it’s most nights

Lionfisher · 06/10/2025 05:05

me too. 3.30-4am, but not drinking helps

Loafbeginsat60 · 06/10/2025 05:12

4am for me too but not always.

Dh has been unwell recently so I'm awake worrying about that

Stress is a major factor for me but I'm a crap sleeper at the best of times

sagebasil · 06/10/2025 05:13

[waves]

yep - but this week it's been 3am 😭

Magnesium taken at bedtime does help. but have run out of this

SatsumaDog · 06/10/2025 05:17

Me too op, it’s a complete pita. I just decided to go with it in the end. I get up at 4 and go to the gym. Unfortunately it also means I have to go to bed earlier than I’d like but it’s the only way I have found to get the sleep I need. I also take a short nap around lunchtime 20-30 minutes if I need it.

MinnieMountain · 06/10/2025 05:18

Me too. I woke at 04:30 today, managed another 30 minutes, now I’m awake for the day. It’s crap.

Do88byisfree · 06/10/2025 05:21

It's brutal! I read about cognitive shuffling this week. I'm finding it helpful to stop my racing thoughts

I know this post relates to pre/post natal but it explains the process.

Hope you find something that works. 🤞

Mind too busy to sleep? Do the Cognitive Shuffle

A technique for tackling insomnia

Me too Op. I too was thinking of joining the 5am club but if I get up I’d make too much noise doing jobs whilst everyone else is sleeping. So I’ll scroll for an hour and hopefully fall back asleep around 6am and get another hour.

Sorry I don’t have any solutions.

Peanutbutterflies · 06/10/2025 05:37

Im in the club... mind going over far toomsny things its so draining!

BlueBlur · 06/10/2025 05:40

Me too between 3 and 5am 🫠

IHateEmptyPockets · 06/10/2025 05:52

Yep same here, no clue how to fix it other than going to bed earlier to hopefully get more sleep that way.

I do yoga (not noisey) before the house wakes.

4.20 for me

Aparecium · 06/10/2025 06:43

Get a little speaker designed to go under your pillow and listen to something that will engage your brain just enough to stop the racing thoughts, but not enough to keep you awake FOMO. It could be music, or rain sounds, or whatever. For me it’s stories read in a quiet, male voice. Either unexciting stories that I know well (no FOMO) or do not have a strong narrative (again, no FOMO), or that are just a bit dull. I get them free from my local library, or Eric Ireland’s Listen to Sleep website. I’ve also got some from Audible.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 06/10/2025 06:52

Me too OP. I have gone from the world’s best sleeper to the worst. It’s certainly stress related as I will overthink and replay things in my head. I’ve tried all kinds of techniques and relaxation but nothing works. So today is another tired day ahead of trying to smile and look like I am on top of things when I am just falling apart.

I tried this but I found that it activated my mind, rather than soothe it, as I was thinking of words.
I try to think of nothing and visualise total blackness.

Nice to know I’m not alone, but how awful that we are all suffering.
Last night I took an antihistamine to help me sleep, I know it’s not a long term solution, but it’s something I occasionally do when I’ve got work the next day.

Piriton works for me but obviously I can't take that every night.
I have used clary sage before, a few drops in the bath and I was so tired after I slept all night, I had actually forgotten about that I must try it again.

ChikinLikin · 06/10/2025 08:03

Me too.
Been like it for ten years.
I've tried magnesium and kiwi fruits!
I've got used to it. I don't worry about it and I go to bed early.

UnaOfStormhold · 06/10/2025 08:04

I second finding something calming to listen to. There are free sleep podcasts like Nothing Much Happens which makes a huge difference, - I am so used to them now my brain seems to instantly switch off!

I take the 1 a night 50 Nytol and find it really helps with the early wake ups. Still wake but can get back to sleep. I used to take one most nights but haven't recently either dh being poorly.

If you can get some I would highly recommend
