Hi I’m 45, for the last year my periods have been all over the place, missed months, came in bit heavier but usually ok. Recently I missed 3 months of my period (def not pregnant). Came on quite light. Two weeks later have come on super heavy (changing super plus tampon every 2/3 hrs) and wearing a pad. I’ve never been so heavy that I’ll leak if I don’t change. I’m away on a UK holiday tomorrow and am dreading the 5hrs drive! To all you Peri Menapause Ladies does this sound normal? I’ve a drs appointment booked for 3weeks time? Thanks for reading x

It’s not abnormal to have heavy periods in peri, though I can imagine it’s alarming if it’s not normal for you. They say if you’re flooding through a super plus tampon and towel in less than an hour you should seek medical advice. Changing every three hours isn’t pleasant but you’ll be fine until you see your GP in three weeks. Your GP will probably recommend a mirena coil, or give you medication that can make your flow lighter.

Hopefully it will ease off very soon and you can enjoy your holiday. x

Yes, it's normal during peri. I had an almost identical experience to you last year, funnily enough -- went three and a half months without a period, then had one lightish (for me) period, and two weeks later, BAM, the heaviest period you could imagine, having to empty my mooncup every hour minimum, what fun. Luckily that only lasted for a day and then tailed off, but it was a bit grim.

Hi I had that problem with super plus tampons , but every 20 minutes full up leaking with night time pads it clothing 2-3 hours seems normal to me.but you could speak to your doctors and get blood test done x

FiveCustardTarts · 24/07/2025 19:51

You can buy tranexamic acid from pharmacy counters and that should reduce the bleeding.

Candlesandmatches · 24/07/2025 19:56

Definitely worth getting a blood test to be sure you are not anemic. Anemia reduces blood clotting time so you bleed more and so it’s a vicious circle.
But yes for peri this can be normal.

Can you ask your doctor about having a scan done? That might make you feel better they can give you a better understanding of why you have heavy bleeding

Bookkeepermum · 24/07/2025 21:09

Sounds peri but when you see your dr, ask to have your CA125 levels checked. Just to be safe and put any doubts to rest

OTTMummy77 · 24/07/2025 21:14

Obviously really important to get it checked out, but this happened to me.My GP friend had been trying to persuade me to get the Mirena coil for months, and then soaking through a super plus tampon and pad in an hour on holiday was what convinced me! I am now on coil number 2(changed every 5 years)and I’ve honestly never looked back!

Clairetwinkletoes46 · 24/07/2025 21:24

I think some others have commented similar… I have same issue with uicu has also caused anaemia. I’ve just had scans done and have three large fibroids and an ovarian cyst. Whilst I wait to be seen by gynaecology my GP has prescribed tranaxemic acid and massively helped with the period of just had x

Legofan70 · 24/07/2025 22:44

I was the same. Always been on the pill so only had light bleeds on 7 day break then periods went haywire. I was 47 didn’t even consider peri at the time. Had scans and biopsy done found to have fibroids. The gynaecologist said I was too young for it to be menopause related. Was recommended to have a coil that I was reluctant to have but that saved me. During my worst time I was using super tampons that only lasted an hour, I was passing big clots had gushing when I stood up. Felt I couldn’t go out bleeding was so heavy and unpredictable some days nothing then the next full on. I brought period knickers that I wore every day in case I got caught out. I became very anemic at the time.
7 years on I haven't had any bleeding for 3 years but have recently found out my coil has disappeared. It was due to be changed at end of year but I guess I do t need to do that now. I have no idea when I expelled the coil but just hoping I don’t start bleeding again. I’m now 54 so hoping I’m over the worst of it.

Icecreamhelps · 24/07/2025 23:27

I had this in early peri. It wasn't pleasant at all. I went on cyclical hrt for a year bleeding settled down. Then moved on to continuous and had occasional spotting. At my last smear they found a polyp that I've had removed after waiting for a year. I've not had a bleed since.

purplehair1 · 24/07/2025 23:31

I had this. Sometimes went through a heavy duty tampon in 10 minutes and always had to have towels and period pants as well. I had 17 fibroids, the largest was 20 cm across. Had a hysterectomy in the end as it just kept on going for years (I hung on thinking my periods would eventually stop). Had the op at 55 best thing I ever did.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 24/07/2025 23:36

I found the mirena coil really helped at this stage, my period stopped after 6 weeks, occasional spotting.

TheGlitterFairy · 25/07/2025 06:39

Similar here and in peri too (46); I saw a gynae consult as flooding was awful. Long story short had an endometrial resection where the lining of the uterus is removed. It was done under a general anaesthetic but is life transforming. Haven’t had any bleeding since it all healed post surgery.

edited to add - have endometriosis too and endometrial cysts so seeing gynae is not an unusual occurrence for me. But the flooding was def new and not sustainable to be living like that. Best thing I’ve ever done to get that surgery. I’d be asking to be referred to a gynae specialist and / or privately to see one. Happy to give you the name of mine who is London based if you DM me.

babasaclover · 25/07/2025 06:53

get go to prescribe tranaxemic acid game changer

Passthecake30 · 25/07/2025 06:58

I was the same, super heavy plus tampons and thick nighttime mattress sanitary towels needed. IIRC that period of time lasted about a year maybe until my periods got less frequent and heavy and then stopped.

WhereAreWeNow · 25/07/2025 06:59

I was the same. I got the Mirena coil and it stopped my periods completely.

Cantsleepdontsleep · 25/07/2025 07:01

I’ve found a moon cup holds much more - but if I’m really heavy I’ll back up with a pad too as if it over flows, it really over flows (especially at night).

FancyNewt · 25/07/2025 07:02

I suggest you get it checked. I had the same thing and lots of people here and in RL kept saying it was normal as part of peri. It turns out I have adenomyosis. I had a mirena coil inserted and no more bleeding. I wish I'd followed it up years ago.

Cheeky19863 · 25/07/2025 10:36

Im 41 and been having very heavy periods to the point i couldnt stand up without flooding and was needing iron infusions. I was referred to gny and was diagnosed with adenomyosis. They put me on the POP but i was constantly bleeding. I went to have the coil fitted and they found polyps. I had them removed this week and have had the mirena fitted. Im hoping this will help me but too early to tell. You need to be referred to GNY. They may also offer ablation. I refused this as i had read its not suitable for adenomyosis and can cause more pain though

I also have adenomyosis and v.heavy periods. I have had the coil fitted this week. Has it helped massively? Are your periods still regular?

Hankunamatata · 25/07/2025 15:23

Ibuprofen can lessen flow. I had mirena put in at same age because of this issue
