Hi I’m 45, for the last year my periods have been all over the place, missed months, came in bit heavier but usually ok. Recently I missed 3 months of my period (def not pregnant). Came on quite light. Two weeks later have come on super heavy (changing super plus tampon every 2/3 hrs) and wearing a pad. I’ve never been so heavy that I’ll leak if I don’t change. I’m away on a UK holiday tomorrow and am dreading the 5hrs drive! To all you Peri Menapause Ladies does this sound normal? I’ve a drs appointment booked for 3weeks time? Thanks for reading x

Hi I had exactly the same thing happen to me and didn’t realise heavy periods are linked to perimenopause. It’s awful! We had a long drive up to Scotland and I was in the same position as you, we stopped at every service station! This lasted a couple of years of them being irregular and heavy. Then they get lighter and taper off, thank god.

I’m the same age, always had heavy periods, never been regular, always told it’s ’normal’ the past year I’ve had 20 periods, even though i was on the mini pill taking it religiously, I leak through a super plus tampon in about 90 mins, have to wear night time towels in the day as well together, the pain I get is horrendous, before & during my period, finally saw a doctor who listened to me & sent me for a blood test & a pelvic ultrasound, I’ve got anaemia, plus a fibroid & adenomyosis, might be worth making a GP appointment to rule it out, I’ve been referred to gynae now.

Oh I feel you! I had this until I went back on the mini pill and that stopped the heaviness as I had days where I couldn’t be too far from a toilet to change a super plus tampon, night time towel and deal with flooding every hour. It was awful and no sympathy from the doctor who just said I could have the Mirena coil fitted and that would make it all better. I said I didn’t want a foreign object that I couldn’t feel, put in, take out or deal with myself as I just felt it was a cop out response. I still get heavy days but nothing like the hideous periods I had before.

Hi, I’ve had the same thing (45) for a couple of years now. Started tranexamic acid and it was the best thing - only take it during 4 days at the start of the cycle (unlike coil or minipill which would need to be constant) and the flow is back to pretty much my teenage years with no side effects.

catmum44 · 26/07/2025 08:34

I never had a problem with periods until peri. Then they got heavy, very painful and more frequent. I had tests done just to make sure all was normal. Visit your GP if you can to get checked out as it could be making you anemic. HRT might help. It will pass.

notasausage · 27/07/2025 12:20

I had the same issue. That combined with struggling to sleep led me to HRT. Occasional issues with flooding since but it has made a massive difference and my flow is much more normal - started using a Nixit Disc instead of tampons too which massively helps if I do get a flooding issue to buy me some time to get to the toilet.

Grumpybear33 · 29/07/2025 19:54

Sounds totally normal to me but I’ve recently had a hysterectomy because of fibroids causing heavy periods. I would go through a super ultra plus tampon in less than an hour, haemorrhage through multiple clothing layers when I stood up and wake up in pools of blood. Ended up with iron deficiency anaemia. It’s worth getting checked out but I’d say your blood loss is normal in perimenopause. You could get a mirena coil fitted. That would probably help. They tried that on me but it just came out on my first period after in a massive clot.
