Hello , doctor prescribed me HRT on Thursday and I’m still holding on to start them as I’m scared that makes my panic and anxiety worse . I’m 48 with short regular periods and one ovary was removed 5 years ago. Not done anything hormonal since then.
Lately my anxiety is constant and I’ve read many people saying the evorel makes it way worse . I don’t know what to do . šŸ˜ž

Do you think the anxiety is largely or purely hormonal, or may have other triggers that are contributing?
I experienced anxiety that I am sure was hormonal - jittery, as if caused by a lot of caffeine, but out of the blue and at times when there was not very much to be anxious about. In situations where it would have been reasonable to be anxious due to something identifiable, I often wasn't.
Started evorel and it hasn't made anxiety worse. At some times, has also improved it. I do find that I mostly wake in the early hours during the estrogen phase, but then sleep well as soon as I am using the estrogen and progesterone.

Anitavirtual · 13/07/2025 21:23

I’ve always had anxiety but from sometime to now it’s like it’s always there, never goes away and it’s worse around my period , today I woke up severely anxious and my day got ruined because I couldn’t do anything, just lay down on the sofa super fatigued and fighting the anxiety.
Thank you so much for your reply

Hopefully you will be able to track some benefits if you give it a go - it's not been complete magic but things are way better than they were 4 or 5 months ago.

A bit of an issue is in the hot weather with getting the patches to stay stuck on. I do it when I can then lie down so my weight is on them for a while. When I am early in the estrogen phase, it's worse for this. I half wonder if natural estrogen is high, the need to absorb some is not as great and may have an effect on this, but it's only a half baked theory.

Anitavirtual · 13/07/2025 21:38

Oh yes I’ve heard to some people they really stick to the skin , but to others when they wake up in the morning patch is not there anymore and some just don’t get them to stick at all . And with showers and everything does it stays on ? Might need some tape on top .

So my symptoms were
insomnia
night sweats
heav periods
brain fog
lack energy
aches/pains

I started patches and the night sweats and insomnia improved in a few days. Over the next month the brain fog and fatigue have improved. Periods and aches are same. About the time my period is due I get a bit low/ragey which is new but it only lasts a day or so.

Everyone is different, you can always come off it if it doesn’t help. Why not try it for 3 months and see

gamerchick · 13/07/2025 21:46

I've found them a godsend. But I was seeing things that weren't there beforehand. Apparently it's a rare thing they don't tell you about! Once the 20 day period was out of the way it was sweet.

I haven't had one come off either. I just warm it up before clagging it on.

With respect OP. It doesn't sound like your anxiety can get any worse, it's already disabled you. You have nothing to lose.

Showers - stay on reliably, though if you are changing it, do it afterwards and when dry. Swimming - for me, worse than showers. Moisturiser or sun cream - make it much more likely to crease and start coming away at the edges all round.

You are so right when you said that , even made me tear up a little . Thank you, that was encouraging.

I’ve just had my first patch. I was on gel before. As far as I know it has a pretty short half life, so if things get loads worse you can stop and the effects will go pretty quickly. I know a friend forgot to replace hers once and within days she had all her symptoms back.

I didn’t know if I could just remove the patch. I’m new in the HRT world I apologise for my ignorance also doctor didn’t explain anything at all , just told me to read the leaflet.

I was very similar to you OP, always been anxious but the end of my 25 year relationship and then a bad accident made me even more anxious than ever. The never ending loop of anxiety, lack of sleep, exhaustion, anxiety ended me up at my amazing GP who referred me to Talking Therapy and also suggested I may be perimenopausal and suggested Evorel.
Took a few months but both helped me enormously- not saying the anxiety has completely gone but I feel like me again. Good luck x

CrazyCatMam · 14/07/2025 10:20

I started the patch and didn’t notice a difference at all, then after a couple of months I realised I felt just like me, and I hadn’t felt like that in a long time.

Used to silently sob regularly - can’t remember the last time I cried. Used to lose my shit with the kids often - again, can’t remember last time that happened. Also, stopped hiding from people - happy to open the door for a delivery, or chat to someone in the street now. I’ve also been able to go for walks and get back into exercise.

You’ve nothing to lose!

I’m so sorry that you went through all that but settling now .
Did you feel ok on both patches or when changing to the progesterone patch ? X

Felt ok on both. Not sure if it was the therapy or the HRT, I suspect both...

I've been prescribed these and still haven't plucked up the courage to take them.
My worst symptom at the moment is bloating as soon as I eat I look like I'm full term with quads. I'm not exaggerating either šŸ˜ž I've had bloods etc done at the docs to rule out other things and everything came back ok. I suffer with anxiety too and I'm worried it makes that worse for me too.

How long have you got them for waiting to be used ?
I waited the 5 days since my period but anxiety was so bad today again , with the chest pain that I thought I would give a try , I don’t know if it was a placebo but after 3/4 hours my anxiety actually eased down , chest pain went away and I felt like sleeping and I did for a little . I still feel ok .

I had dreadful anxiety, feelings of ā€˜doom’, palpitations and poor sleep, all the usual symptoms. The patches helped within 2 weeks, I felt like I’d been looking at life through a window for months, didn’t even realise how detached and flat I felt. I’ve had 2 years of delicately working towards improvement (iron supplements, exercise, rest, self care, hypnosis for anxiety)and my symptoms are still cyclical but they are a lot better than they were. I went on HRT at 40 which is young and I had to argue for it, but it’s definitely helped me.

I was prescribed them about 3 months ago 😬 but since then life has been chaotic - think family bereavement and all the stress that goes with it. I haven't had chance to think about using them and my period symptoms kind of took a back seat for a while. I'm on the mini pill so don't have periods, so I'm guessing I can just put one on whenever.
