How do periods fade away usually?

HappyDaysAreAhead · 21/05/2025 22:28

My periods were usually around a 35 day cycle.

In the last couple of years they've shortened to around 26/27/28 day cycles.

Do people generally go to shorter cycles then start to miss? Or do they just stop?

My cycles got longer and longer over about three years and then stopped.

Itisallgoingtobeok · 22/05/2025 05:20

I was wondering this too. My cycle was 30 days and now is more like 23 days. I’m fed up of the increased frequency.

AlteredStater · 22/05/2025 05:53

I always had irregular cycles tending towards slightly longer than average (32-33 days) but occasionally shorter ones (21-24 days) throughout my reproductive life. This didn't really change much going towards menopause. I did have a couple of really heavy periods then they just stopped. I didn't miss any periods before this.

FetidMoppet · 22/05/2025 06:03

I had extremely regular periods for years, then they went very erratic. Quite often a much shorter and heavier cycle, 18/19/20 days instead of 28. Totally unpredictable. This went on for a couple of years then they got further and further apart over another couple of years and finally stopped. Whole process took about 5-6 years, last period was age 45.

I’m the same. Totally fed up. Used to know pretty much to the day. I expected that to stop but for my cycle to get more variable not shorter every time. Doesn’t help that I have a health condition that is known to frequently flare up during for women during perimenopause so I just want it to be over.

Mightyhike · 22/05/2025 06:13

Mine are all over the place tbh. I'm 51 and still having fairly regular periods (I did miss one a few months ago), but they're completely unpredictable in terms of long / short / heavy / light / early / late. This has been going on for months now.

PermanentTemporary · 22/05/2025 06:16

Mine got heavier, shorter and a bit more erratic, then much more erratic, then I ha e t had one since February.

Sourisblanche · 22/05/2025 06:16

Also 51, usually 28 day cycle but now it can be 18/22/28. Very annoying as so hard to predict. The only way I know is a night sweat a couple of days before.

My mum didn’t stop until 55 so maybe I’ll be the same.

User27563 · 22/05/2025 06:21

I'm 44 now and mine have shortened to an average of 3.5 weeks, and they last a week! So only 2.5 weeks period free before the next one (and for one of those I have terrible PMT!) can't wait for them to get further apart, hopefully it will be quite soon!

ChocolateGanache · 22/05/2025 06:23

49 here. Getting a shorter cycle too. And much more painful ovulation. When are they going to stop?!

My mum can’t remember 🙄

Mightyhike · 22/05/2025 06:24

My mum was 54.

UseOfWeapons · 22/05/2025 06:29

Mine were every 28 days for years, then 26, then in my late 30s, started getting a bit shorter, with some 18/19day cycles. Then at 44, nothing for 8months, followed by a period lasting 3-4weeks. Then nothing ever again. It was all over. Had migraines instead!

dudsville · 22/05/2025 06:32

I had some random aspects, but they would get closer together, last longer, maybe have a day's break, then continue as if it was another brand new period. Alongside that, I was burning through hot flushes nearly hourly for the last bit, like a fireworks display heralding the end of 34 years of hassle.

Goingawayistricky · 22/05/2025 06:36

About 2 years of mega bleeds - still very regular. Then nothing .
The bowl of tampons is still in the loo. Literally couldn’t believe they were just over.

And then 3 months after that hair, skin and muscles just sort of fell apart. Aged horribly.

Chimchar · 22/05/2025 06:37

I’m in the same position. Long period (10ish days), about 12 days off then back on again.
Its really wearing. Can’t wait for them to stop 😭. I’m 50. On HRT which is seeming to be less and less effective.
GP just isn’t interested.

devildeepbluesea · 22/05/2025 06:39

I’m 52, and still have periods every 28 days. They got lighter after DD was born (I was nearly 40) but haven’t changed since then. Bit sick of it now.

Mum passed away at nearly 52 without having stopped.

Oh I thought E erythigb would be better once they stopped 😬.. I've been hoping mine would but they've gone from missing the odd one to closer together.

I'm contemplating at what point hrt is a good idea.

Exactly the same as me. Infact this time last year I didn’t have a period from May and I was delighted. I thought they were done. Then they appeared again the following January as if they’d never left. Heavier than ever. Now I can no longer predict them. Is a real pain. I’m 49.

TubeScreamer · 22/05/2025 07:51

Mine changed from regular as clockwork every 28 days to infrequent but much, much heavier. And then stopped. Over the course of a 12-18 months.

MissAnthr0pe · 22/05/2025 07:57

Mine were very regular (28 days) until perimenopause. Then they became more frequent (21 days average) then less frequent for just under two years (35-60 days) then stopped just after I turned 50.

sashh · 22/05/2025 08:10

Mine got lighter and went from every 28 days to every 3 months then stopped.

I have a totally unscientific theory that you get crap periods either at puberty or at the menopause.

SmallGoddess · 22/05/2025 08:14

Mine just stopped, so it can happen. I was 48.

TotemPolly · 22/05/2025 08:14

I had a natural early menopause at 39 . Had a usual period and then the next month , nothing and the month/s after still nothing .

Renabrook · 22/05/2025 08:16

Mine come and go when they feel like it, no joke I had a 2 week one then none for months now back to regular
