How do periods fade away usually?

HappyDaysAreAhead · 21/05/2025 22:28

My periods were usually around a 35 day cycle.

In the last couple of years they've shortened to around 26/27/28 day cycles.

Do people generally go to shorter cycles then start to miss? Or do they just stop?

In the year before mine stopped they became shorter but very heavy. During the last six months they happened every other month or so. Last period in September 23 was a very half hearted affair, lasted one day and then that was that. Hurray, it’s lovely not having to think about periods.

i’m 41 and mine have always been 28 days on the dot. in the last year they have been anywhere between 15 and 26 days. driving me mental

JasmineAllen · 22/05/2025 08:20

Everyone is different OP. Mine were regular up until 52 and then just stopped without warning which was both great and annoying at the same time because I'd just bought a few pairs of period pants I only got to use them a couple of times 😂

shellyleppard · 22/05/2025 08:25

My timings were all over the place. Longest without a period was 58 days, then one finished and the next started two weeks later. Had the Mirena coil as I was bleeding so heavily I was anaemic. Had that for 3 year's, one very light bleed for a day and it was done.

Anyone stopped the mini pill at 55 who can say what happened?

I've had a blood test which shows I'm not menopausal, I'm coming up to 54 and am dreading stopping the pill because I've not had a period since I started them.

Sorry to hijack the post - just interested in reading all of your experiences but no one has mentioned the pill

Oh I thought E erythigb would be better once they stopped 😬.. I've been hoping mine would but they've gone from missing the odd one to closer together.

I'm contemplating at what point hrt is a good idea.

I thought things would improve as it wouldn't be such a hormone rollercoaster!

I can't remember what was happening with my periods in the lead up to it as I had a lot going on but I do remember that my last one lasted for six weeks and I haven't had one since.

Great news. Do you feel better all round as it's not a hormone rollercoaster?

I finally do. It has taken a while and it’s certainly taken its toll but I am feeling so much more settled, not as unpredictable and my brain will switch off allowing me to sleep again.
I didn’t go on HRT as I felt I was coping but I have heard it can be a great support.

Gettingbysomehow · 22/05/2025 18:35

My periods were only ever three days long and not much every 28 days exactly.
Then I missed one at 45 thought I was pregnant but I wasn't and never had one again.

I’ve deleted my period app now I’m 2 years post menopause, but IIRC they were erratic but not problematic for a couple of years, then got further and further apart until I hit 12 months. No HRT. I’ve had various issues which could be associated with menopause or could just be getting older and doing too much running: aches, sleep issues, flushes (mainly at night). I had a period of clinical depression and an eating disorder in my mid to late 40s (for which I received intensive support for) so I can’t say how my mood was impacted by hormonal changes.
My running is better now, sleep is ok, flushes very rare and generally feel ok as I approach 55.

BruFord · 22/05/2025 21:44

I’m 50, regular every 28 days but they only last about four days. I have no idea what’s going to happen next!

Esperanza25 · 22/05/2025 22:22

Regular every 28 days until age 55 and then just stopped. Very little change before that, maybe slightly lighter, nothing dramatic.
The difference in women’s experience is remarkable.

EilishMcCandlish · 22/05/2025 22:31

My mum was done by mid 40s.
I am nearly 53 and still going. Longest I have got to was 6 weeks. I was starting to get excited but then bang. They are shorter and heavier but otherwise every 29-30 days, as always.

Knittedfairies2 · 22/05/2025 22:35

I was as regular as clockwork with a 28 day cycle until they just stopped when I was 56.

HippyChickMama · 22/05/2025 22:49

Mine were like clockwork, every 28 days until I got to 42 and then they started to get closer together and irregular, cycles of 15-25 days. I started HRT at 44 (now 46) and for the past year I’ve been having longer cycles of 28-43 days and they’re heavy and painful. I’m hoping they’ll stop in the next couple of years. Dm had a hysterectomy quite young, so nothing to go on as a guide

lacksomjam · 24/05/2025 12:11

Anything from 19 to 108 days over the last three years. Will have a big gap then a couple of normal-ish cycles / ovulation symptoms. Before that they had got closer together and heavier. Lighter in the last year so I’m hoping to be nearing the end. Am 53.
