No period for 6 months - could this be it? Late peri-menopause

I'm not happy about it, I'm not ready for it and wanted another baby so I am so angry with my body..but I have now not had a period since July last year and that one was horrendous. Heavy, bright red blood, leaking through everything and the clots that came from me were huge. I could feel them passing out of me.

I have the odd hot flush during the day but not every day and am often warm during the night and can wake up wet on my neck and chest but its not every night.

What was your late peri menopause like? I have just turned 44 btw

I went 6 months without a period... and then they came back and were pretty similar to how they were before.

Haven't had many other symptoms - a bit of brain fog, very occasional night sweats, and - recently - getting emotional at EVERYTHING!

I'm in a different place in my life though - I'm over 50 and am very ready to see the back of periods. I can imagine that in your situation you'd be happy to see them back again. And it could happen...

I really hope and pray so.

I've given up hope now and I keep reading about others who fell pregnant during what they thought was peri-menopause and it wouldn't be possible but doesn't seem I'm that lucky.

44 is young to have finished your periods. Has your Doc ruled everything else out?

catin8oots · 06/01/2025 16:50

My periods stopped at 43 - 18 months ago.

You really want a baby at 44/45? 😱 That's wild

I have had loads of tests down to not getting pregnant in 5 years and they have always said everything is fine but my egg count is 0.2 so pretty much diminished

I don't think 44 is too old. People live much longer, healthier lives these days.

catin8oots · 06/01/2025 16:59

Oh good luck OP I wish you all the best. My SIL had her two girls at 42 and 43 naturally

WutheringMights · 06/01/2025 17:02

I'm so sorry you're going through this.
Is your AMH 0.2?
If so, it's very very unlikely that you will conceive and carry a baby to term.
That's not to say you can't have a baby with your DH. You could look into donor egg. You are the same age as my sister and she is currently pregnant with a much longer for baby using a donor egg and her husbands sperm.

Is that not premature menopause? My mother had menopause at 43 and was told it was early. I started having (what turned out to be thyroid related) hot flushes at 40 and my pretty useless GP said 'oh well, daughters often follow the mothers, so if your mother had menopause at 44, you can expect to experience menopause early too' and gave me the whats the issue? bored tone.

I would go GP get basic tests done including sex binding hormones.

Then definitely do a PRIVATE test for full thyroid antibodies including Free T3 and T4. You won't get the antibodies or the T3 via NHS unless you are prepared to haggle it. Thyroid function can affect periods and fertility.

If everything is good with the latter, you should go to menopause clinic or good functional medicine doctor, better yet a DUTCH trained one and get tests done. I have read some women have got their periods reinitiated for a while with help. But sadly it may just be something you have to accept.

I am 49 and will never be happy to go through menopause as I know the consequences to health for me not be positive.

fghbvh · 06/01/2025 17:11

I have been unable to conceive and currently my period is 28 days late. I'm also 44. I'm having lots of other peri symptoms, but didn't put it together until this month. I guess it explains why I haven't been able to get pregnant. You have my sympathy.

Frostine · 06/01/2025 17:14

My last period was age 39 . You can request a blood test that checks your hormone levels which will tell you if it has started .

TappyGilmore · 06/01/2025 17:24

I went 6 months without a period age 44-45, then they did come back but much further apart, lighter and shorter. Currently on the third one since they came back.

GP said “yes that’s about what we’d expect at your age.”

The 'normal' range is 45-55. 40-45 is considered 'early' but not 'premature'.44 is just a year outside the normal range so not very young. Although trying to talk to my GP in my early 40s about peri symptoms they keep telling me I'm too young for that so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Angrymum22 · 06/01/2025 17:29

Have you had your Prolactin level tested. It’s often missed by GPs. Can be secondary to under active thyroid or primary with pituitary problem. High prolactin stops ovulation before it stops periods so may explain problem with ttc.

MaggieBsBoat · 06/01/2025 17:32

That’s very early. I’m 51 and went without for 6 months. As of today they’re back. Is it stress. If your egg reserve is very low etc then I suppose maybe it could be but I always think early 40s is very early for menopause. FWIW I had my last baby at 43.

stichguru · 06/01/2025 17:34

I am 43 and am definately in peri, I have a friend who was there by 40. Yes people sometimes don't stop until much later, but it doesn't sound that early either. Yours sounds much like mine. I'm sorry if it has stopped earlier than you wanted.

The thinking on this has changed slightly but it's not filtered through to written guidance across the board.

Although 45 is considered 'okay' there is info on Menopause Matters by a consultant gynae (NHS) who says that in Western societies, 47 is considered the earliest 'healthy' start of post meno.
51 is the average age.

Many specialists would suggest HRT from 44-51ish at least for bone protection.

gemdrop84 · 06/01/2025 18:00

I'm 40 and for the past year have had irregular periods, missing periods and a shift in my PMT. I've had bad acne and rosacea which flares up during my cycle.
Although my periods are irregular I now get a hormonal headache 2 days before my period which is new (it's nice to get a heads up but this is awful) I'm also experiencing insomnia, hot and cold flashes and nocturnal panic attacks during ovulation when I've tracked it....there's definitely something amiss and it does fit with perimenopause from what I've read.

Yes AMH is almost diminished. Thank you that’s great for your sister. My dh isn’t keen but I might do more research x
