Can peri cause you to lose weight?

unlikelychump · 04/12/2024 21:54

I seem to have totally lost my appetite in the last 3/4 months. I have always been starving my whole life and never able to go more than a couple of hours between meals, but suddenly I am just not hungry. I am also eating smaller portions and barely any of the good stuff like cake. I don't drink too much either. I've lost 10lb now, without any effort (although I can't quite tell and my tummy is not where i am losing it sadly)

It genuinely feels like the scales might be broken!

I also have a stressful life, but I have always been an eater when stressed so this is very weird.

Can it be peri? I am 44 and also getting night sweats, possibly rage too (although only with annoying people!)

Night sweats and weight loss really needs medical investigation. You shouldn't assume peri without ruling out other causes.

LostittoBostik · 04/12/2024 21:58

Yes the combination of weight loss and night sweats needs serious illness quickly ruled out. It's one the nhs red flags. Please don't wait for any more symptoms to make the call to your doctor.

RandomMess · 04/12/2024 22:00

Please do and seek urgent medical appointment.

Stopsnowing · 04/12/2024 22:00

i am not a doctor but no one I have ever known lost weight due to the menopause. Please see a GP asap.

gamerchick · 04/12/2024 22:01

Not really IME.

Dude you need to see a medic.

ditzzy · 04/12/2024 22:05

Is there anything else going on at the moment that could be causing it? Extra stress or anything like that?

I agree with all the other replies that you should check in with a GP or at least a nurse, but it could be something really straightforward.

I’m a similar age and suddenly dropped just over a stone in weight over about six months without trying and a quick blood test showed I was low in folic acid and vitamin B12. With both of those now being treat my weight is stable again and I’m feeling back to my normal self.

ditzzy · 04/12/2024 22:07

(Sorry, completely missed that you’d put stressful life. So even more stressed than usual? Actually need a proper break?)

gaggiagirl · 04/12/2024 22:09

I'm a similar age to you and also think I'm peri. I took have been starving/greedy all my life. These past 3/4 months I have no appetite and eat like a bird. I've lost half a stone. I don't really feel hunger and feel nauseous a lot. I think it's all down to peri menopause.
You absolutely should see your gp though 10lbs is a lot!

You also need to see your GP if you haven't already.

unlikelychump · 04/12/2024 22:19

Funny one. Always wanted to lose weight and now I have I need to worry about it! Yes slightly nauseous from time to time and I don't tend to fancy anything. I love not having the food noise tbh (feel like I'm on the injections!)

Yes more stress than usual - possibly uber stress. Normal is busy job and 3 kids (with sen). New issue is marriage falling apart / husband checked out.

I hope it is nothing, but will contact the gp. I think there is some online form thing I can do.

Make that appointment!

If you’re anything like I was a year ago then you probably think that making time to go and have a medical appointment for yourself is just another logistical headache - but you need to do this for you. You’d do it for one of your kids, so do it for you.

Are there any other self care things you should be doing too?

Noseybookworm · 04/12/2024 22:40

It could be just being stressed and anxious if you're going through marriage difficulties but I would get yourself checked over with your GP just in case 💐

Applecrumble24 · 04/12/2024 22:46

Another vote for seeing your gp asap. These symptoms are red flags, always best to get checked

teatoast8 · 04/12/2024 22:48

Definitely see your gp x

Redcrayons · 04/12/2024 22:53

Generally speaking the opposite happens.

WorkinMumsince4ever · 05/12/2024 10:12

Dear unlikelychump, the group has spoken, just wanted to say I truly hope your situation turns around and brings you all the support and care you need. Big bear hugs to you.

Windypinecones · 05/12/2024 10:13

The weight loss could be Type 1 diabetes

Sudden development of diabetes in older adults can be a red flag for other illness so needs investigating.

unlikelychump · 05/12/2024 16:49

Well you will all be pleased to hear my gp is trailing an online form to triage. So I filled it in last night and they rang me this morning and made time for me after work. I can't ring at 0800 so would never have got this appt otherwise. I guess they read mumsnet 😁
I'll report back.

This btw, thanks for the kick!

Doctor seemed to think it was worth doing something, blood tests on Monday.

Noseybookworm · 05/12/2024 22:04

Well done for getting it checked out! Hope it goes well 💐

gaggiagirl · 05/12/2024 22:06

Great news. Hopefully it's nothing to worry about.

unlikelychump · 06/12/2024 07:04

I am now wondering about diabetes. I am thirsty all the time. I thought it was just because I have gone off tea and so I have a funny taste in my mouth. I think I drank 3 massive bottles of water yesterday morning and I also drink a lot in the night now.

I might just be putting 2 and 2 together though. I have so much on I don't think I have been paying much attention to me, also sitting alongside possible peri who h I have been looking out for.

Anymore dastardly illnesses I could look up and see other symptoms.
