Can peri cause you to lose weight?

I seem to have totally lost my appetite in the last 3/4 months. I have always been starving my whole life and never able to go more than a couple of hours between meals, but suddenly I am just not hungry. I am also eating smaller portions and barely any of the good stuff like cake. I don't drink too much either. I've lost 10lb now, without any effort (although I can't quite tell and my tummy is not where i am losing it sadly)

It genuinely feels like the scales might be broken!

I also have a stressful life, but I have always been an eater when stressed so this is very weird.

Can it be peri? I am 44 and also getting night sweats, possibly rage too (although only with annoying people!)

Don’t look them up!!

But if you really must, I think thyroid issues would be a more likely culprit if you really want to worry about something more than stress, a too-busy schedule and forgetting to look after yourself properly.

It depends how long the period that the weight loss (and other symptoms) have been happening really.

But the most important thing is that you’re now finding out and getting everything checked.

If the doctor thought it was diabetes they would have checked things like urine on the spot (was it a face to face appointment?) because it’s so important to get treatment started quickly.

After I had Covid I lost my appetite for around a year and dropped two dress sizes, sadly it came back again. I wasn't drinking so much water though... hopefully you'll get to the bottom of it

I lost weight (15kg) in peri and am now rarely hungry. It did coindide with cutting out upf though. I now eat 3 meals a day and to make sure I get the calories I need even when not hungry.

I was a bit worried there might be an underlying medical condition but I had every test going and is is fine other than a caeliac test result which I am still waiting for.

Interestingly like you I also get really thirsty but tested negative for diabetes, hba1c was 31.

So my bloods are back on the app. Noone from the gp surgery has called so I guess they think they are fine. They look basically fine to me, although I haven't figured out the thyroid one yet - (is it tsh?) I don't seem to have symptoms to match the under or over active thyroid list.

The only one that stood out a bit (I just looked where I was in the ranges) was hba1c which was at 40, said it is normal, but 41 is pre diabetes. I looked again at the diabetes list and there is something about peeing at night, losing weight, thirst and tiredness. I have Al of that, but none of it extreme, also a slightly funny taste in my mouth.

One to watch I guess.

Well that’s good news that everything has come back looking normal!

Although sometimes it’s more reassuring if there’s something to treat (like a vitamin). Yes TSH is thyroid.

Do you have any follow up steps with the GP to further investigate your symptoms?
