Hi all, I'm 66 and I'm really struggling to sleep at night. I've tried discussing this with my doctor and they won't give my sleeping tablets, I've tried calms and remedies.
Any suggestions please?

I have found Flaxseed oil works well. You need a fairly high dose. I'm using the extra strength omega 3, 6, 9 oil from Holland and Barrat and I take 2. The regular ones I need 3.

Having said all that, HRT helped more but I find the two together have transformed my sleep completely.

If you decide to explore HRT at any time, ask your dr to explain the risks clearly. The risk of stroke for women over 60 is still low and reduced even more by a) using transdermal HRT (not tablets) and b) starting on a very low dose. Obviously if other things work for you, that's all great.

TheTruthICantSay · 21/11/2024 15:16

The increased risk of strokes is relatively low and is generally considered to be outweighed by the beneifts. I would argue that long term sleep deprivation puts you at significantly more risk to your health than HRT. Obviously, that's just me, but as someone who did not sleep for 10 years and who has seen life changin gimpacts and benefits from getting some decent sleep over the last year, that's how I feel! I take magnesium
Glycinate before bed and use a magnesium lotion on my feet as well. My sleep is much improved!

Enough4me · 21/11/2024 23:52

Magnesium spray helps a small amount, but I always sleep better on my HRT progesterone weeks.

NonchalantGuy · 22/11/2024 00:41

francium spray, gets you to sleep permanently (metaphorically speaking)

How long ago did your periods stop @lozaa1958 ?
Did your GP suggest an antidepressant for flushes because you said you didn't want to try HRT? How long have you used it?
It might be worth having another consultation with your GP, to discuss all your menopause symptoms, as it sounds as if they may have been going on for some years now you're 66.

I take chamomile supplements - 2 per night and they helped enormously for sleep.

You had a hysterctomy and you didn't get HRT!? I don't understand how that is even possible. I am concerned about your doctors and think you should consider asking to be referred to a specialist.

Magnesium, or Omega 3, or both, will help. But they're not sleeping pills - it won't be a magic, instant fix. It's cumulative and it helps somewhat.

Women were offered HRT in 2008 after a hysterectomy. After a hysterectomy ovaries usually fail within 2 years or sooner.

medical advice now is HRT not ADs unless you have medical issues preventing it (or you just don't want it.)

You should also push your GP to arrange a DEXA scan of your bones as you've been without estrogen for a long time. Check for osteoporosis.

They offered me hrt but I wouldn't take them .

I am on HRT and take magnesium glycinate. Sleep is still pretty poor. I have resorted to antihistamines (the old fashioned ones) or night nurse.

Do you take these every night?
I'm struggling massively with sleep.
Waking so early daily and utterly exhausted! 😴

NotFuckingLadyLike · 22/11/2024 20:52

Magnesium Glycinate has massively improved my sleep. More the quality of sleep rather than length of time if that makes sense.

Which type do you take please?

lorisparkle · 22/11/2024 23:09

@Enigma52 I took the antihistamines every night for a couple of week as I was struggling so much. I am currently on my two weeks of progesterone and that is helping with the sleep but I am struggling with other stuff instead.

lozaa1958 · 23/11/2024 09:03

I was offered hrt after my op but like I say I didn't want them with all the side effects I know every one isint the same didn't want to take the risk of stroke .rather try any thing else rather than hrt .
