Perimenopause, long period.

Has anyone had a 12 day and counting period? Is this normal perimenopause stuff or should I be concerned? I thought it had finally all stopped as there was a short 3 day period and then gap of 2 - 3 months before this (probably more like 2, I can’t remember). But no, it started again 12 days ago and although reasonably light is showing no signs on stopping. I’m fed up with this! I’m 54 in a few months and at this stage think “roll on menopause”, but should I be making a GP appointment for this or is 12 days (and probably longer at this rate) usual at this stage?

I'm currently on day 25 and counting! I'm 57 and posted about this the other day. I do have a history of fibroids that keep growing back and 12 days isn't unusual for me, but clearly is for you. Like you, the bleeding isn't heavy, mostly more like spotting, but is so worrying as well as annoying! I've have a call with the GP later so will update my thread.

LonelyFooleightyfour · 25/10/2024 20:22

Experienced it in 10 days (light spotting), then stopped for a week, and came back for 5 days. It continued for like 5 months but on different days. I also feel some back pain but not as severe when I was in my teens.

Stoneyellow · 25/10/2024 20:35

Yes, mine have been up to four weeks long.

GP never called so will have to try again next week, hoping I don't bleed to death in the meantime.

@Stoneyellow I'm experiencing the exact same, my periods are always at least a week, 12 days is average for me, but my current one is entering its 4th week! Did you get an explanation? Was supposed to speak to My GP yesterday but they never called so God knows when I'll get an appointment.

GoodVibesHere · 26/10/2024 08:09

I'm on day 35!

Stoneyellow · 26/10/2024 09:56

I saw the GP and they said it's menopause innit 🤷‍♀️

So now it's my new normal.

Omg! Spotting or full on bleeding? I'm no stranger to random bleeding but I'm finding 26 days straight, albeit light, hard to cope with.

On no 😟 did they not offer anything to help stop or control it? Bleeding that long can't be healthy.

I bled for 5-6 days a week for six months. I was referred for an US and eventually had some fibroids removed, had one more actual period and then was done.
Is it 'normal' blood or kind of pink or orange?
It's not out of the ordinary for perimenopause (everything going haywire being unremarkable) but you don't just have to put up with it. Would you try a Mirena coil? I had one fitted during my last hysteroscopy procedure (as the progesterone component of hrt) and regretted not having it earlier.

It started with a heavy period for 8 days then became a light period for 23 days (I had to use thin panty liners, and there was always bood when I wiped) and now it's back to being a proper period again. I'll have to see the Dr soon because surely this isn't normal. I'm almost 50.

Thanks for all the responses. I see I am not alone and it could be much longer! I might not bother with the GP at the moment and see how it goes for the next few weeks. I think all of us should monitor iron levels. Mine are already right at the bottom of the acceptable range and have been for years, not matter what I do to try and up them, so could do without this.

Oh no, how did or do you all put up with these long bleeds? Mine is light and dark red, now seems to tail off at night for the last few nights so I think it’s stopped and then be quite obvious again in the morning. I hadn’t heard of mirena coils, might just make a GP appointment after all as this is really annoying me now, mainly used to 5 day tops, every 4 weeks fairly regularly. I would love it to be less or stop altogether but not thrilled about it being more frequent/longer. Hope everyone here gets a solution.

I’ve had a period for 100 days and now 73 days

Speiln · 12/12/2024 23:41

@Winterdown , wow, that’s a long time! Have you seen the GP or had a scan? I had an ultrasound last week and everything looked normal, so it seems 25 days doesn’t always mean something is up apart from peri-menopause, unless it’s something not picked up by ultrasound.

I’m 51, I had my second contraceptive implant removed in July after starting HRT in May of this year, subsequently early November flow came to town with a vengeance. I hadn’t had what I would call a period for mostly the whole six years that I had my implants over, nothing to write home about by any means. This one that reared its ugly head was heavy, I had to take a change of underwear with me at all times, this lasted about 7 days before petering off, I had about three days of nothing then it started again but much lighter and darker in colour and had an almost silty consistency. Now I am at the stage where it’s on the tissue when I have a wee but not on the pads that I wear. I have been referred to the hospital just to check everything out and they are giving me a scan on Thursday. All in all you could say that I’m currently at 40+ days and it’s doing my head in. I was on Evorel Conti but have since changed to Evorel Sequi

Seekinginfolady · 03/01/2025 00:18

Following this with interest.

I'm in my mid 40s and early last year my periods got lighter over time then I missed 2 periods. I finally got it but 2 weeks on, I'm still spotting! Grrr. I saw the GP with my first missed period to check my thyroid etc. Apparently ok so perhaps it is perimenopause.

nonbinaryfinery · 03/01/2025 00:32

I've had to have a mirena coil fitted on top of my usual HRT, to stem the heavy bleeding. I've been bleeding for about three months now, although the coil means it's very light.

Why this sodding reproductive system can't just die quietly, is beyond me.

Thanks for sharing and I'm glad the coil helped to make the periods lighter - hopefully it stops properly soon for you!

I was wondering to what tests did the doctors perform to ensure this is all perimenopause related?

Hi goodvibeshere, did you ever end up going to the GP and if so, curious to know what they advised/did. I'm going to try to get an appointment but the time to see them is so long.

I've been on for 4 weeks and counting. GP is finally sending me for an ultrasound

Good luck with your scan. Hopefully you don't have a long wait. What age are you and do you have any other symptoms?

Bogocz1 · 27/06/2025 00:06

52, weight gain and slow metabolism but no mood swings and no hot flushes. Started out as light brown bleeding for weeks but this week it's suddenly gone heavy and painful.

EBearhug · 27/06/2025 00:19

My longest (so far) was 43 days, with flooding and huge clots. That got me a gynae referral and lots of iron tablets.

Bogocz1 · 27/06/2025 07:16

And was anything wrong?
