Am being referred to GP for a falls assessment. I fell.again today in the garden doing the washing. I've fallen at least 3 times this year and twice last year.
Is this a menopause thing. Am I getting old too quickly? What's going on? Am averagly healthy. Don't drink or use substances. Get enough sleep. On the same meds for at least two years.

Doesn’t sound meno related to me.
By fall, do you mean faint? Or do you trip over a cat? What happens?

IBlameYourMother · 07/10/2024 21:33

How old are you? How is your balance and joints in general? Any previous broken or sprained ankles/knees etc? Any ear issues?

Pardon the pun. Weak ankles run in our family. Since my late 40's have had sprained ankles a few times No ear issues. I had some slight deafness when I had a cold nearly two years ago, but GP looked in my ears and said they were fine

We lose balance skills as we get older... Do you do any physical activities that involve balance?

If not, you should sort that out asap. Yoga is good for this.

Tiredallthetimeneedsleep · 07/10/2024 22:39

Have had numerous tests / scans/ x-rays/ nerve tests/ bloods tests and MRI's ( have had lower back pain for years )- nothing conclusive I wear wrist splints 80% of the time as I get pains in my wrists l thumb joints.

Maybe I should look into a yoga class. I did try Pilates but struggled a lot as I can't really put weight on my wrists hands without pain

Do you do Pilates, yoga or bodyweight workouts regularly? A stable core is a good aid to balance. It's also worth practising standing on one leg then the other while you clean your teeth - build up to being able to do it for at least 30 seconds on each leg.

Look online for ankle strengthening exercises. I found some and they really improved my posture and stability.

What shoes do you wear? Make sure you wear shoes with proper ankle support. Wedges are better than heels. Heels with a strap and or full shoe are better than heeled mules or sandals.

The main thing is core. You could start doing lots of sit ups, Russian twists etc without any weight on wrists.

I think you need to see a physio. I saw one who gave me great exercise sessions to strengthen my ankles/feet and improve balance. They made a world of difference. (About £150 for 3 sessions and save the NHS thousands)

Delatron · 08/10/2024 09:24

Are you tripping over and falling? So a balance/strength issue?

Pilates is amazing for balance and will help with your back by strengthening your core (this also helps with balance). You can just say to the instructor that for now you can’t put weight through your wrists (but you need to address that too and build up gently).

Sadly as we get older we actually do need to do more weight bearing exercises.

It is something to address as it won’t get better by itself and falls are such an issue the older we get.

Jimmyville · 08/10/2024 09:27

Yoga - most days. You can do 5 mins or 1hr.

JinglingSpringbells · 08/10/2024 10:02

You're being referred to your GP? Who's referring you?
Do you mean your GP is referring you to a specialist?

You really need to be referred to a neurologist.
Falling over for no reason can be all kinds of things and you probably need scans. Do you lose consciousness even if it's just for a few seconds?

How long ago did you have all the tests you've mentioned?

Sorry OP I have reread your posts and it’s unclear what happens when you fall. Are you losing balance/ tripping over or are you fainting? These are all different things. Are your legs giving way? Are you conscious of what is happening?

Tiredallthetimeneedsleep · 09/10/2024 02:35

Am not fainting. Think I'm tripping / mis-footing ?

You need another full assessment.
All kinds of neurological conditions can cause falls.
It could be something affecting your balance, or even your eyesight or hearing.

Do you work shifts? Just seen the timing of your post- or not in the UK?
Shift work an have health risks for all kinds of reasons.

Are you tired all the time (like your user name?)

maclen · 09/10/2024 07:51

Have you had a brain MRI / Scan? Could it be early onsite dementia?

Are you- as your user name say- tired all the time?
Do you work shifts? Or have insomnia?
(You posted in the middle of the night.)

If so you need to talk to your GP about this.

Tiredallthetimeneedsleep · 09/10/2024 17:01

Update - spoke to GP. Had heart listened to and blood pressure taken. ( BP was a little higher than normal). Asked me to walk from one side of the room to another . Checked my muscle strength in arms and legs and asked some questions. Nothing to be concerned about. Have to ring and make appointment in 2 weeks for bloods and BP.
