Horrendous night sweats

bimo · 11/09/2024 19:33

I've been getting awful nights sweats on and off for past two years (I'm now 43), hrt didn't help, private endocrinologist did lots of blood tests and fsh tests, none showed signs of peri. Apparently.
Tests for lymphoma etc. bloods normal.
I'm going to assume peri as the gp doesn't care.
Anyway, the sweats stink. Our mattress is fully zipped up now in waterproof case, I have waterproof pillow cases and sleep in a light weight blanket. The extra washing is soul destroying..pillowcases and pajamas every day at least.
Any tips to help? Even a fabric spray to stop our bed smelling?
Weirdly it doesn't happen when we go away. It really makes me miserable.

I'm sorry to read your post OP. I'm not much help as going through similar bit in on a switch to a new type of HRT from my old one. Having to deal with the cold, clammy dampness every morning and also wash my hair daily too as it looks awful from being damp and stuck to my head. I've had lots of tests recently so am assuming it's nothing serious but honestly, thought after 4yrs on HRT and being 57 I'd be past all of this now 🙁

Taciturn · 11/09/2024 19:55

What's different when you go away? Diet? Cotton sheets? Alcohol consumption?
I was going to suggest eating more legumes - I think the fibre acts as a detoxifier in some way. And you might like to look up Lisa Mosconi on YouTube.

That's what we are currently trying to figure out.
I don't drink alcohol at all, same diet. We house sat for my brother three streets away and used our own bedding.. no night sweats. So I tried sleeping on sofa to see if it was our mattress at home, but same night sweats.
It's bloody baffling. Private endocrinologist was useless and more bothered about being paid. His diagnosis was I don't know.

Can you make your bedroom cooler, have shower about an hour before bed?

Read up on all the tips about coping with them.

I had dreadful ones after the birth of my 3rd. Used to wake up drenched. Currently still have light night sweats on HRT but yep the horrid stink too 🤬

Cutting out gluten helped me a bit.

Also, is there a possibility that the waterproof covers are making it worse? I had concerns that the lack of breath ability was just radiating my heat back on to me

It's not made any difference to be honest. They still come and go. I'm also always cold, so don't actually overheat at all.
Plus we had carpet beetles which are soul destroying little bastards to get rid off, attracted to sweat on fabrics so we wanted to protect the mattress as best as possible.
Which when you sweat profusely is an absolute nightmare.

Does the mattress protector etc not make your sweating worse though?

I am still sleeping with just my brushed cotton duvet cover. I may have to add my 3 tog wool duvet soon I guess.

Grizzles · 11/09/2024 20:10

What sort of mattress do you have?

What sort of mattress do you have?

Think it could be memory foam. We can't afford to replace atm

A large stand fan?
A wool duvet, kind of takes the sweat in but doesnt keep it. They are kind of costly though so try https://baavet.co.uk/baavet-wool-bargains/
For a cheapish one to try. Any sunny dry day you hang it out and it airs.
Instead of a waterproof protector how about a thicker one, I'm not thinking wool necessarily, but a couple inches thick.
As high a thread count only cotton, no mixed materials duvet cover and sheets.
Maybe https://www.kingofcotton.com/product-category/bedroom/bed-linen/600-thread-count-bed-linen/

And I know its counter to what you think you need but a weighted blanket, again cotton only covered. Available on Amazon and Ebay and other places.

I'm thinking the weight of duvet and sheets and blanket will help you sleep much better, and the fan set to wave over the top, taking the heat away.

This is exactly what I do from when the nights get cooler until spring. Then from spring til autumn I just have the wool duvet.

My fan was originally silent, but it's getting a bit noisy now. Will be changed soon for another silent one.

I can't help with the smell but I'm just wondering why you are using a blanket rather than a sheet if you get so hot.

bevelino · 11/09/2024 20:35

You need a different HRT prescription, try Utrogestan and Oestradiol gel. It stopped my sweats within a week.

AmandaHoldensLips · 11/09/2024 20:49

I had to change my bedding every 2 days or it smelled like a hobo had been in my room.

Ramped up the laundry, towels, clothing, everything, like FFS and thinking that I was going mad and turning into a werewolf.

also the big Meaco fans are great - the sort of egg shaped ones.

I don't get hot. I'm always cold. Go to sleep cold, wake up in the night cold.
It's a light weight blanket anyway.

If you're able to have your own bedroom that's a big help.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 11/09/2024 21:09

Do you have tiredness during the day or any other symptoms during the day?

whatisforteamum · 11/09/2024 21:12

Mine only stopped with Hrt.
You have my sympathy.
The sweats stink.grapefruit shower products were my friend.!

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 11/09/2024 21:13

Also you could use a dettol washing liquid for your bedding and pjs to help eliminate the smell.

AnnaMagnani · 11/09/2024 21:16

How big a dose did you get to on HRT?

Non-medication wise you could try wicking nightwear and bedlinen. Google bedlinen + Coolmax. I bought this for my dad when he had horrendous nightsweats from cancer and he said it worked brilliantly, to the point where if he had to go into hospital he insisted on taking it all with him.

I struggle to sleep if my HRT is too low and I'm away somewhere with polyester duvet + mattress. So your memory foam mattress may not be helping.

Spartak · 11/09/2024 21:19

Has your heart been checked? My drenching night sweats were caused by a cardiac issue.

DatingDinosaur · 11/09/2024 21:32

Oddly, I find I sweat less when I wear more to bed and am warm when I get into bed. I find a warm, not hot, shower before bed helps with this too. Might be worth a try - nothing to lose if it doesn't help.

Definitely a meno thing though.

Bpod1 · 11/09/2024 21:42

I have the exact same symptoms. The last 6 months I have reduced my carbs and started to eat more protein including beans and pulses. I have stopped eating after 7pm, don't eat anything sugary in the evenings, also stopped hot drinks in the evenings. Also increased some basic exercises. This has all helped to reduce night sweats, bloating and reflux. The only thing it hasn't done is loose the weight I have gained since my metabolism has slowed but I'm hoping it will do soon. I have started to feel better. It's a difficult lifestyle change but it's really made a difference. I hope this can work for you too

I think memory foam mattresses are notorious for causing overheating aren’t they?
I couldn’t sleep on one of mine, friends have had to ditch theirs for similar reasons…

Chillow pillow might be an option?
