Almost 40 - breast pain on right breast - peri?

ConfusedFox · 14/08/2024 16:43

Hi all,

Has anyone experienced breast pain (on only one breast) as a peri symptom? I've had it for 2 weeks, currently on day 14 of cycle. Like stabbing pains behind nipple but feels tender too and oh the pain if my boob gets jabbed. A bit like when you start breast feeding? I can't feel any lumps or see any differences. I will do an econsult to hopefully see the doctor as I am obviously worried but a friend said she gets breast pain each cycle but only for a day or two?

Thank you

Interested to see any responses to this, as I've had breast pain (in both, but much more in my right) recently, same as you describe. I've got the implant, so no real cycles, although I do bleed every 6 weeks ish. Didn't used to get breast pain as PMS. Also nearly 40 and haven't felt myself for about a year, but can't pin down exactly what. A friend mentioned peri the other week, but I thought I was too young

ConfusedFox · 14/08/2024 19:11

@Ihaveneedofwaternear thank you for reply. Have you been to doctor at all?

Please get it checked. Go and ask for a referral to a breast clinic. I say this as these were my symptoms when I had breast cancer. However, and please take note of this, it could be a number of other things that give the same symptoms such as fibroadenoma or a cyst. You haven't mentioned a lump but I would check. It will probably be something completely innocent but please don't ignore it and have it checked out. Flowers

@TheFormidableMrsC Thank you for the reply and I am sorry to hear that. I hope you are well now. This is at the back of my mind so thank you, I will ask for a referral. I can't feel any lumps.

I worry because you repeatedly hear people saying that pain is not a symptom. It was my first symptom. However, that is a really sensitive nerve filled area and if you've got a cyst or anything else, it will be uncomfortable. I think because it's not across both breasts, it's worth getting checked out. I don't mean to alarm of course, but in the unlikely case of worse scenario, the sooner the better. I'm fine and all my treatment went smoothly. I'm a big advocate for being clear when something is unusual for you. This is unusual so getting it checked out is the best thing. Please keep us updated!

I had this on and off for a few months a few years ago. Then after 6-7 months, a slight dimple appeared. I went to the Breast Clinic at that point, and there was a tiny lump that turned out to be an evil little fucker cancer.

So while it's highly unlikely to be the same, I'd want this to be checked out, especially as it's just on one side.

ConfusedFox · 14/08/2024 20:25

Thank you @KentishMama I am sorry to hear that. Hope all okay now. That is frightening.

I'm very well now. And I'm not here to scare you - well, only enough to get you to seek medical advice. Call your GP in the morning and insist on a referral to a Breast Clinic. Better safe than sorry.

I absolutely agree with this. Glad you're ok now @KentishMama. I am too! Onwards ❤️

God this is uncanny, I had to check to see if I wrote this post and forgot about it. I'm mid 40s and started with very similar pain to what you describe about two weeks ago. I saw the GP last week and she thought given how severe the pain is and how quickly it started, it was unlikely to be sinister and wanted to try a course of antibiotics. They have made no difference at all. I'm seeing her again on Friday so will report back.

I do have Bupa so might go down that route if there's much of a wait for a referral.

ConfusedFox · 14/08/2024 20:49

@evilharpy thank you for reply. Let me know how Friday goes please. We have bupa too so please update if you go down that route.

I have had a period of stabbing pains in one breast. It would be frequent, then disappear for a while, then come back. I thought it might be peri. It was when I was around 48. I don't have it anymore. However, the pain was not related to touch. I don't recall any actual tenderness.

Bellamari · 14/08/2024 21:07

This was my first symptom of peri. One sided breast pain that lasted for a few months. The painful breast swelled up. I had always had pain before my period, but on both sides, and not as severe.

I got referred for a mammogram which was clear, the specialist said it was hormonal and very common. I said on one side only? He shrugged and said bodies are funny, but you’ve been examined and scanned and there’s nothing wrong.

After a few months the pain stopped and the swelling went down. I started having vaginal dryness and dry eyes and achy back instead. All peri related.

Definitely get checked but don’t worry just yet.

You'll be put on the two week pathway. Once you're in, they are utterly brilliant. I hope it's nothing for you.

MountainBiker · 14/08/2024 21:14

I get this just too (right breast only). Has been increasing in intensity over the last 10 years (am now 45). Definitely worth getting it checked out via the GP/breast clinic - i've been twice for them to confirm it's 'just' hormonal. Hope it's nothing sinister for you too

ConfusedFox · 14/08/2024 21:37

Thank you @Bellamari and @MountainBiker that is good to know too.

Yes I had that stabbing pain in left breast - I think it was start of peri. My GP referred me for a mammogram even though the breast check only starts at 50 in my country. She said it was good to have a baseline mammogram going into peri. I would've been 46 or so at the time

ConfusedFox · 15/08/2024 09:21

I have done an econsult this morning so will hopefully see a doctor soon.

OP posts:
ConfusedFox · 15/08/2024 11:27

Doctor said breast pain in itself not enough to refer after only 2 weeks but if still in discomfort in another 2 weeks he will refer.

OP posts:
evilharpy · 15/08/2024 17:20

That's a bit shit. Did he prescribe anything in the meantime in case it's some sort of cyst/infection?

Bellamari · 15/08/2024 18:07

OP I can recommend Ibuleve or similar ibuprofen gel for the pain. That’s what the breast consultant told me to use. He said if your estrogen is low it makes your breasts hurt.

ConfusedFox · 15/08/2024 18:08

@evilharpy he said take ibuprofen and sent me information on evening primrose oil. I feel reassured that it will definitely be a referral in 2 weeks if still in pain but also think odd I wasn't offered an examination and my word was taken for no lumps but I'm pretty certain I can't feel one.

@ConfusedFox i had this in my late 30s, had a mammogram and was told it was mastalgia.
My breasts are always awful the week before my period even on HRT/Mirena, but for the last year since starting HRT I have a super sore left breast.

Bupa weren't bothered, said that pain wasn't a sign of breast cancer. It comes and goes, always the same place. I'm assuming it's a variation on a theme of the mastalgia I had 10yrs ago.

The comment about pain really annoys me. It was my first symptom, my tumour hurt a lot. It's just not true that it is not a sign of cancer. Of course there are a million other things BEFORE it being cancer but that misinformation needs to stop. I've come across many women during my BC journey who said the same.
