For those who have had a hysteroscopy did you have GA/local or just pain relief? TIA

Just asking in case they mention having one.

Hi I had paracetamol and ibuprofen and managed but knew there was LA and gas and air if needed. It was ok 👍

Droolylabradors · 01/08/2024 20:32

GA and I also had a D&C biopsy. My gynae won't do them without GA.

Because of the D&C I was on the ceiling with pain afterwards. If you need a d&c have a GA and get codeine before you leave hospital, paracetemol didn't touch it for me.

alrightluv · 01/08/2024 21:07

Thank you both. I hope you're both OK?

I’m due to have one next week and I’m opting for a spinal. They gave me the option of ga (I wouldn’t have it done without either spinal or ga) but I decided to go for spinal because I have mouth issues and didn’t want to have the tube in my mouth.

thursdaymurderclub · 01/08/2024 21:29

i had one 2 weeks ago.. without any pain relief! they also took a biopsy again no pain relief!

they found abnormalities and a growth which he wanted to take out there and then, i refused point blank! GA or nothing.

i had the growth removed under GA last week and another biopsy was taken, still waiting for the results.

when i had the procedure done 3 years ago the consultant was a female and she gave me pain relief without question. when i had it last week the consultant was a man who never even considered pain relief!

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 01/08/2024 21:31

I had one last year. Was offered no pain relief. I would refuse without decent pain relief in future.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 01/08/2024 21:35

I had one with a d&c and a coil fitted all at the same time and that was done under a GA - I didn’t even have to ask. No pain after and I don’t remember anything happening with my mouth either so any intubation happened when I was already under and was removed before I came round! No pain afterwards either.

Droolylabradors · 01/08/2024 21:41

Hi OP, yes thanks I was all clear. Good luck with your appt.

I've had three over the years. Never been offered pain relief/anaesthetic. They are extremely painful and you cramp afterwards for hours. I really think they ought to offer gas and air

Duckinglunacy · 01/08/2024 21:46

I’ve had one without GA (but with local anaesthetic in my cervix) and one with GA. The one without GA was totally fine - a little uncomfortable, but more psychologically so than physically. I was alert, interested and chatting. I had to then have another under GA because not everything could be achieved under local. The GA was fine too but recovery from that was a number of days whilst I walked 2 miles home from hospital with the other.

I know that people always insist GA is needed, but actually it’s worth a go without, it’s not that big a deal.

PerfectYear321 · 01/08/2024 21:48

But then again a male gynaecologist wanted me to have an endometrial ablation (where they literally burn the lining of your womb to stop your periods) without anaesthetic. He said most women are fine with just taking Paracetamol an hour before Hmm

I’m surprised you’d have another without demanding a GA / spinal after finding the first one painful. 😳 I wasn’t offered pain relief but I just said nope I’m not having it done without it.

I didn't know you could demand one!

Oh you can ask for anything… I mean they can only say no. 😁 I’ve got really complex health needs (lupus, Addisons, Sjögren’s, hypothyroidism etc etc) so I’ve had a LOT of medical stuff done. I’ve learnt the hard way if you don’t ask you don’t get.

funny isn't it that the male gynae's think women are ok to get on with it without pain relief.. my last gynae was a male and didnt even offer pain relief and was so matter of fact it was untrue.

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 01/08/2024 22:10

I've got one on Monday and haven't even been offered it without a GA.

Can anyone tell me how long recovery takes after? Will I feel ok to work the next day? I'm having a polyp removed, possibly a problematic fibroid removed that's growing into the lining and he's going to assess the womb when there as I have maybe 30 fibroids.

If he just does the polyp and fibroid removal, will I feel ok the next day? Also, I'm actually due on my period on Monday and they are super super heavy, will I not be able to use tampons for this period?

seensome · 01/08/2024 22:19

I had local, just for a straight forward look and biopsy, I had some prescription strength codine I took an hour before. For removing fibroids etc, I'd expect would be more painful, but I honestly didn't think it was that bad, I chatted away to nurses the whole way through.
I'm booked in for an ablation and definitely will be under GA.

Whattodowithallthebooks · 01/08/2024 22:19

I had one with local anesthetic in my cervix. It was very painful. I'd go for GA or sedation or at least gas and air if I could.

JinglingSpringbells · 01/08/2024 22:38

Everyone is very different. I had one with nothing but there was the option of a local if needed.

In all honestly, I think a lot depends on the skill and experience of the dr. Mine was done by a consultant gynae/ surgeon.

I didn't want a GA as that's a real palaver, with no eating, an adult to look after you post GA, and a very big deal (IMO.)

But I accept we're all different.

abracadabra1980 · 01/08/2024 22:43

I had one a month ago and insisted I took my own Diazepam (15mg) which they were fine about, then I had has and air. I was able to talk but can't remember anything painful whatsoever. There's no way, after researching this procedure, I'd have stayed in the hospital without knowing I could use anti anxiety and pain relief.

gettingolderbutcooler · 01/08/2024 22:59

My hysteroscopy was fine! Bit uncomfortable at times but didn't need any pain relief.

alrightluv · 01/08/2024 23:02

@Droolylabradors that's good news.

Interesting how there's so many different answers.
