I got myself one of these. HRT and Magnesium (glycinate) work for me for 2 weeks of the month. Then the 2 weeks before my period it's hell trying to get to sleep. I bought this a week ago and I've been sleeping really well every night since.

How long have you been on HRT?

I couldn't sleep until I had the right dose of oestrogen. You may not be on enough.

Perfectlystill · 08/04/2024 22:23

Get a Sensate device. They're expensive but brilliant.

Also, listen to podcasts. They send me to sleep within minutes.

Melatonin

Strongbeatsskinny · 08/04/2024 22:23

Try cutting caffeine intake after 2pm I find this works along with a hot shower before bed. I also noticed that if I’ve not been outside in the fresh air I don’t sleep as well either. I hope you find a solution and get a better nights sleep soon.

Enigma52 · 08/04/2024 22:29

37.5mg of Amitriptyline and a Zen bear gummy, works for me.

Nannyfannybanny · 08/04/2024 22:31

Melatonin is not licensed for use in the UK. If you buy it online from another country, you don't know what you are getting.

PrimalLass · 08/04/2024 22:39

I've bought thyroid medicine from Thailand for 10 years. A little bit of weak melatonin from iherb doesn't worry me.

skilpadde · 08/04/2024 22:52

Promethazine (a sedating antihistamine, commonly sold as Sominex, though the brand names seem to have been out of stock for some time) works for me, though I use it only when necessary (I also use oestrogel and magnesium glycinate).

Hi there, this is my first ever post and I think I might have a helpful suggestion - my sleep was badly disrupted by hot flushes, etc. and a friend recommended a wool duvet. It helped me a lot. If you've never seen them, as I hadn't previously, they are a lot thinner than feather or polyester filled ones and at first you think, "Will I be warm enough with this?" but they are brilliant for temperature regulation and I sleep much better. Hope things improve for you soon as well.

Namddf · 09/04/2024 10:29

I struggle with sleep despite being on oestrogel and magnesium, but for me it is definitely worse on my 2 progesterone weeks.

Do you take continuous progesterone I.e. every night? If so, could you switch to sequential so at least you’d get 2 weeks of decent sleep a month?

In my experience not much helps when it’s hormonal.

Droolylabradors · 09/04/2024 10:39

The magic bullet for me was having a mirena coil fitted. Within a few weeks I couldn't cope without 8 hrs of sleep a night. Plus a nap.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/04/2024 10:40

All magnesium did for me was upset my stomach. It made no difference to menopausal sleep.

Droolylabradors · 09/04/2024 10:56

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow what type of magnesium did you use? I use glycinate, no stomach issues.

cleo333 · 09/04/2024 10:56

I'm on evorel 75 patch 2x week and utiogesstan 109mg every night ( gp stopped the break recently) . I also take vitamin d3 and magnesium glycinate daily . I'm still hot flushing have lots of leg pains and not sleeping ! It makes me wonder if any of it is worth taking :(

So try the non-medical/hormonal approach. I haven't been allowed HRT because of various heightened risks and I've had to find ways to cope with my menopause symptoms without pills - honestly, the wool duvet might sound lame (or lamb :D) but it really makes a big difference! Good luck, whatever you decide to try :)

YourSpleenIsDamp · 09/04/2024 11:05

Melatonin

MagpiePi · 09/04/2024 11:06

I am wondering if my disturbed sleep and random night sweats is down to either just over eating late in the evening or if it is specifically having sugar in the evening.

I get slightly restless legs if I haven't done much walking or exercise during the day.

I'm on Evorel patches and a Mirena coil.

XFiler · 09/04/2024 11:12

I take melatonin it’s the only thing that works for me

Droolylabradors · 09/04/2024 11:56

OP i was still hot flushing at 75, I'm on 100 now. Still flushing occasionally, just waiting to see if I can increase oestrogen past 100.

Heatherbell1978 · 09/04/2024 12:04

I'm also on 75mg estrogen patches and progesterone, take magnesium and have insomnia...!
I've been on HRT a year and on this dosage for 3 months now and I have to say, in the last 2 weeks I've slept better. Not brilliantly but I don't feel like I can't function in the morning at the moment which is a nice change. Not sure if it's just that I needed to wait 3 months? I've also realised that an antihistamine before bed can give me a better sleep which helps my allergies too. Nytol works for me as well but I try not to take things every night. Nytol twice a week max for example.

AnnaMagnani · 09/04/2024 12:12

On 75 I was still flushing and not sleeping. Just about there on 100.

Must admit I didn't ask if I could go up, just cut the patches to make 100 and announced I'd done it and it was working.

doubleshotcappuccino · 09/04/2024 12:17

Try listening to yoga nidra helps a lot .. you can also learn to do it in your hard which is amazing to help fall back asleep

cleo333 · 09/04/2024 12:21

It's a relief to hear it's not just me ( sorry if it's you struggling) . I can totally see why it's been so hard for me to work properly this year and why I've been anxious as this lack of sleep has affected me so badly in all areas . Also changing gp advise has been a challenge too . Thankyou for your ideas they are helping

Cannabis is the only thing that works for me.
