Avoiding weight gain around the middle?

redfacebigdisgrace · 01/03/2024 13:27

Is there any way of avoiding this? Or limiting it?

I try to limit sugar, eat lots of protein and weight train. Anything else I can do? I don’t drink alcohol.

Thanks

@missfliss I'm with you on the 0% Skyr or Greek yoghurt

@JinglingSpringbells the 5% Greek has double the calories and less protein/100g. Anyone who’s building a diet around protein and weightlifting is likely to opt for 0% as part of their overall macro.

It's not quite double @PortiaWithNoBreaks

The one I eat is 92 cals for 100gms (5%) compared to 72cals for 0%.
Only 20 cals difference in 100gms.

That's both fairly low cals for both as a portion is around 125/150gms.

It's personal choice but I'd rather 'save' the 20 cals difference on something else.

No HRT here and no excess weight around my middle. I've never been overweight though.

I do lots of hiking and old fashioned keep fit exercises.

I don't eat late at night. No alcohols and small portions/meal sizes.

Genes help as my sisters and I are all the same.

@JinglingSpringbells You do you.

Fage is 93/9.0 for 5% and 0% is 54/10.3 and I eat at least 200g per serving. So for me over the course of a week it’s about -400kcal.

Thanks for all the protein ideas. I struggle a bit as work is very hectic (teacher) and I don’t get much time for meals during the day. Breakfast is usually porridge which I try to protein up but it’s still quite carby. I do have a protein shake too. Meals involve chicken/fish or eggs, plus vegetables of some sort. Beans and pulses hurt my stomach although I do still try and eat them as I know they’re good for me!

Sleep is a big factor for me (I’m currently awake at 3am!) when I’m tired the carb monster kicks in and it’s much more difficult to eat healthily.

@PortiaWithNoBreaks just read your earlier message - thanks, I don’t know how I missed it first time around! Yes I lift decent weights to failure in the gym 4 days, have a PT. Lots of glutes/shoulders. My core is pretty strong from years of Pilates. I do the same as you with salad and veg - I love a huge colourful plate! I don’t zero carb just focus more on the protein and veg.

I did used to follow ESG but she annoyed me too much😂

For those that find fat free Greek yogurt bitter , try making your own. I do and seriously it’s like eating cream it’s that smooth and mild. I have a large bowl of that with 25gr of oat bran and as much fruit as I can get into the bowl for brunch and it keeps me going till early evening I just use skimmed UHT milk and my original starter was a Yeo valley 0% live yoghurt

JinglingSpringbells · 04/03/2024 08:22

@PortiaWithNoBreaks Oh sorry if I somehow caused you offence over the yoghurt. I came back to say I'd had a senior moment by looking at 2% yoghurt, not 0% then I read your comment.
I'm not body building like you are. I was simply saying that I don't like fat free dairy .

henlake7 · 04/03/2024 12:04

I think sometimes a certain amount of weight redistribution at middle age is unavoidable.
Ive lost nearly 6st now (over 50 and peri) in just over a year and even though I eat a healthy unprocessed diet, no alcohol and regularly do weights, pilates and cardio I dont think my waist will ever get back to what is was when I was younger!
Luckily I was very curvy when younger so even with less waist now I do still have one!!LOL

In other words if you follow every tip and live a super healthy lifestyle but still cant change your shape then maybe its time to accept your middle!

redfacebigdisgrace · 04/03/2024 12:43

@henlake7 no, I will fight on! 😂 Well done with your weight loss! Great effort.

@suki1964 sorry to derail the thread but can you tell me how you make it into Greek yoghurt? I have an old Lakeland yoghurt maker I could use - how do you strain it to get that texture ?

Buy a muslin cloth ( 3 for around £10 from Amazon ) and let strain overnight. I usually need to mix a bit of whey back in to slacken it

missfliss · 05/03/2024 07:20

@suki1964 thanks - do you kind of tie it up and how do you suspend it? (Sorry stupid questions).

@JinglingSpringbells I used to get weight training mixed up with body building too. And whilst they both use weights and resistance- building significant bulk is really incredibly hard, and significantly harder for women. Most women using weight training will be building muscle but will in fact probably look smaller / leaner as a result. Reducing body fat ( which adds a lot of volume to our shapes) and upping the proportion of muscle which takes up a lot less space than fat cells. It's totally possible to stay at a certain weight but change shape entirely through weight / resistance training

suki1964 · 05/03/2024 08:26

@missfliss line a colander with it and rest over a deep dish. Tuck any spare cloth in under the colander else you will get a puddle on the counter.

missfliss · 05/03/2024 09:03

Thanks so much for taking the time @suki1964 I will give it a go!
